Six types of hat stiffened composite panels were manufactured with different bonding methods and stiffener section shapes and compression testing of these panels were performed. The panels showed similar behaviors in bucking and postbuckling region before a skin-stiffener separation failure occurred. Although all the separation failures occurred at the same locations of stiffener flanges close by skin buckling crests, the separation loads, separation failure growth behaviors and final collapse loads were different with respect to bonding methods and stiffener section shapes. As the separation failure initiated early and propagated larger area, collapse loads and structural efficiency of the panels decreased.

The postbuckling behavior and failure of composite cylinders subjected to external hydrostatic pressure are investigated by a finite element method and test. A nonlinear finite element program, ACOS, is used for the postbuckling progressive failure analysis of composite cylinders. A total of 5 carbon/epoxy composite cylinders were fabricated and tested to verify the finite element results. For comparison, analyses by MSC/NASTRAN and MSC/MARC are additionally conducted. Among the softwares, the finite element program, ACOS, predicts the buckling loads the best with about 11 to 26% deviation from experimental results except for one specimen. While the finite element analysis shows global buckling modes with 4 waves in hoop direction, in the experiments the local buckling appears first and results in the final failure without global buckling.
In this paper, postbuckling behavior of laminated composite-stringer stiffened-curved panels loaded in local compression is analyzed using the finite element program developed. Postbuckling Analysis is performed in dividing the panel behavior into three basic parts. The eight node degenerated shell element is used in modelling both panel and stiffeners, and the updated Lagrangian description method based on the 2nd Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor and the Green strain tensor is used for the nonlinear finite element formulation. The progressive failure analysis is adopted in order to grasp the failure characteristics. The postbuckling experiment of the laminated composite-stiffened-curved panel had been done to verify the finite element analysis. The buckling load and the postbuckling ultimate load are compared in parametric study.
In this study, structural analyses were carried out on the composite sandwich panel which was tested under compression loading. In the structural analyses, three types of finite element modelling were considered and linear buckling analysis and nonlinear analysis were performed for each FE-model. Through the analyses, it was found that shell elements for face parts and solid elements for core part were appropriate for the better prediction of the buckling load of the panel. If the material failure of the face is critical than overall buckling of the sandwich panel, the use of one shell element through the thickness direction was suitable in the FE-model for the better predictions of failure location and failure load.

Composite materials are used for main structural components of aircraft fuselage such as skin, stringer and frame to reduce weight. Failure and buckling analysis of the composite fuselage components have been done for structural design. The loads of MD90-30 are applied to each component. Various shapes of section such as I, Z and T-type are chosen as candidate composite stringer and frame. The analysis results of composite fuselage components are compared according to ply-angle and ply-number, and the section type. The numerical results shows that ply-angle and ply-number have important effects on failure caused by axial load for the frame are important design parameters of composite fuselage components. This study suggests several design tips for composite fuselage components.
In this study, a micro-genetic algorithm was utilized for the optimal design of filament wound composite cylinders subjected to hydrostatic pressure for underwater vehicle application. The objective of the optimization was to maximize the design allowable load considering the buckling and static failure loads. A commercial finite element program, MSC.NASTRAN, was used for buckling and failure analysis. An open-source micro genetic algorithm by Carroll was modified for the optimization. The design variables are the helical winding angle and hoop layer thickness. The results of examples show that the micro genetic algorithm can be successfully applied to the optimization of filament wound cylinders with various geometries and gives better efficiency than general genetic algorithms.
In this study, fiber orientation of stiffener was conducted to increase buckling load or failure load in each case with a different design value and a different objective function for stiffened laminated composite panel of I-type under compression loading. Regarding each of buckling load or failure load as objective function, optimum design was carried out. In respect of optimum design, it was investigated that optimum shape for buckling could improve fail load for postbuckling, because it was difficult to investigate the optimization of postbuckling which need long analysis times for nonlinear analysis.
This paper presents the optimum design methodology for composite wing structure which automatically calculates the safety margin using optimization framework integrating failure modes. Particularly, its framework is possible to optimize sizing procedure to prevent failure mode which has the greatest effect on reducing the sizing time of composite structure. The main failure mode was set as the first ply failure, buckling failure mode, and bolted joint stress field, and the margin was calculated to minimize the weight. The design variable is a laminate sequence database and the responses are strain, buckling, bolted joint stress field. The objective function is the mass of the wing structure. The results of buckling analysis were compared using the finite element model to verify the robustness and reliability of Composite Optimizer.

The buckling and failure of filament wound thick composite cylinders under external hydrostatic pressure were investigated by the finite element analysis and test. ACOS, MSC.NASTRAN, and MSC.MARC were used for finite element analysis. T700 carbon-epoxy filament wound composite cylinders were fabricated to have winding angles of $[\pm30/90]_{FW}$, $[\pm45/90]_{FW}$, $[\pm60]_{FW}$, $[\pm60/90]_{FW}$, and tested to verify the finite element analysis. Among the softwares, ACOS predicted buckling load the best with about 1.7~14.3% deviation from test. Analysis and test shows cylinders do not recover the initial buckling pressure after buckling and directly lead to final failure.
