  • It is necessary to evaluate the resistance to disease among genetic resources for development of disease resistant grapes. This study was conducted to screen the resistance to crown gall in muscadine and Florida hybrid bunch grapes by pathogen inoculation. In order to compare the responses to infection with different pathogen strains, muscadine and Florida hybrid grapes were inoculated with 3 strains of Agrobacterium vitis. Although there were different levels crown gall formation among grape cultivars, there little variation in response to inoculated strains. Among 29 muscadine cultivars tested by inoculation of A. vitis 'C4612', most of them were shown to be susceptible, and 'Gold Isle' and 'Africa Queen' were highly susceptible, and two cultivars, 'Welder' and 'Jumbo' were found to be resistant to crown gall disease. Among Florida hybrid grapes, 'Daytona', 'Stover', and 'Swanee' were susceptible and 'Blanc du Bois' was moderately susceptible to crown gall. Because muscadine grapes have been actively utilized as useful genetic resources for development of new grape varieties by intersub-genus cross, this result from the screening of resistance among muscadine grapes can provide valuable information in breeding programs of grape resistant to crown gall.

  • Autoignition suppression of hydrogen/air premixed mixtures by $CF_3CHFCF_3(HFP)$ was investigated computationally. Numerical simulation was performed in isobaric and homogeneous system to evaluate the induction times. The detailed chemistry of 93 species and 817 reaction mechanism was introduced for hydrogen/air/HFP mixtures. The result of pure hydrogen/air mixture show that the resulting value of induction time depends relatively weakly on the definition used event though there are various criteria for defining the induction time such as the inflection of temperature, OH and $O_2$ concentrations generally. Also, the autoignition temperature of $H_2/air$ mixture is estimated to about 850K, which is corresponds to the literature value. In the case of HFP addition in $H_2/air$ mixture, the results shows that there are several inflection points of radical concentration, and hence it might be to use the temperature for defining ignition delay. When HFP is added to stoichiometric $H_2/air$ mixture, the effect of ignition delay is outstanding above 10% HFP concentration. As HFP concentration increases, both dilution and chemical effects contribute to delay the ignition. Also, the chemical effect on the ignition delay is more considerable with the higher HFP concentration.

  • An unidentified moth was captured in sex pheromone traps of the oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta, especially at spring season in apple orchards and their vicinity. Though the captured males were similar in appearance to G. molesta males, they were easily distinguished by a matted difference in body size. Their occurrence pattern was also similar to that of overwintering G. molesta population from April to May, at which more males were captured in the pheromone traps installed in the vicinity of apple orchards than within apple orchards. After May, they were no longer captured in the pheromone traps. To investigate any larval damage due to this unidentified moth, molecular markers needed to be developed. Four PCR-RFLP markers originated from cytochrome b region of mitochondrial DNA could distinguish this unidentified moth from G. molesta.

  • Since there have been no method which can applicable to the screening of commercial sesame oil adulterated with other vegetable oils, the present investigation was carried out particularily focusing on the the pattern of IN absorption of sesame oil and other vegetable oils. For this, a variety of oil samples prepared by the conventional method from sesame seeds, perilla seeds, com, soybean, and rice bran were analyzed by IN spectrophotometer. IN spectra of sesame oil and oil of unheated sesame seeds showed absorption peaks at 215, 230 and 290 nm. While UV spectra of com oil, perilla oil and soybean oil all showed absorption peaks at 215, 230 and 280 nm, that of rice bran oill showed peaks at 215, 290 320 nm. When sesame oil was mixed with com oil, perilla oil or soybean oil, respectively, from which the absorbance of peaks at 290 nm were lower than pure sesame oil. The peak at 320 nm which was typical absorption peak of rice bran oil was still observed in the spectnun of mixture of sesame oil with rice bran oil.

  • This paper proposes a method in which classes are grouped as a hierarchical tree structure for the effective classification of the Raman spectra. As experimental data, the Raman spectra of 28 chemical compounds were obtained, and pre-treated with noise removal and normalization. The spectra that induced a classification error were grouped into the same class and the hierarchical structure class was composed. Each high and low class was classified using a PCA-MAP method. According to the experimental results, the classification of 100% was achieved with 2.7 features on average when the proposed method was applied. Considering that the same classification rates were achieved with 6 features using the conventional method, the proposed method was found to be much better than the conventional one in terms of the total computational complexity and practical application.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to know the usefulness of the MRI to distinguish lipoma and well differentiated liposarcoma (WDL). Materials and methods: 47 lipomatous tumors with MRI were reviewed among the 107 lipomatous tumors operated in our department. MRI examinations and their corresponding pathology reports were compared to determine sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic ability, positive predictable value and negative predictable value. Statistical analysis was performed to know the relationship between malignancy of the tumor (WDL) with the age and gender of the patients, and location, depth, size and the enhancement of tumors in MRI. Results: Among 28 lipoma in MRI examinations, 26 were proved as lipoma in pathology, and only 6 were WDL from 19 suspicious lesions in MRI, and others were proved as lipoma variants mostly. The varieties of lipoma variants were fibrolipoma, angiolipoma, spindle cell lipoma, lipoblastoma and angiomyolipoma. The sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic ability, positive predictable value and negative predictable value of MRI were 100%, 68 %, 72%, 31% and 100% in WDL, and 90%, 89%, 89%, 93% and 84% in lipoma. Among the variants to distinguish WDL and lipoma, the size of tumor and enhancement in MRI were significant statistically (p<0.05). Conclusion: MRI was highly sensitive in detection of WDL and highly specific in detection of simple lipoma. The size of tumor and enhancement in MRI were significant variants to distinguish WDL and lipoma. When MRI finding is non-specific, it is more likely to represent one of lipoma variants.

  • Eight cation or anion-responsive polymer membranes were prepared by a casting procedure employing polyvinyl chloride, Bis (2-ethylhexyl)sebacate and each electroactive material in the ratio of 66 : 33 : 1. The resulting membranes were separately installed onto the sensitive area of the ionic electrodes to produce an 8-channel taste sensor array. The taste sensors of the array were connected to a high-input impedance amplifier and the amplified sensor signals were interfaced to a PC via an A/D converter. The taste evaluation system was applied to a discriminant analysis on six groups of marketed beverages like sikhye, sujunggwa, tangerine juice, ume juice, ionic drink and green tea. When the signal data from the sensor array were analyzed by principal component analysis after normalization, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd principal component explained most of the total data variance. The six groups of the analyzed beverages were discriminated well in the three dimensional principal component space. The half of the five groups of the analyzed beverages was also discriminated in the two dimensional principal component plane.

  • The effects of roasting condition and storage time on rancidity of rapeseed oil were studied. Rapeseed oil from rapeseed roasted under different conditions were stored in the dark at $17^{\circ}C$. Volatile compounds of rapeseed oil were analyzed with an electronic nose (E-nose) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The data from the E-nose were analyzed using discriminant function analysis (DFA). As roasting temperature increased from 150 to $240^{\circ}C$ over 20 min, the first discriminant function score (DF1) moved from positive to negative. DF1 decreased with storage time and changes in DF1 were higher between 0 and 2 days and between 20 and 24 days. Twenty-four compounds were identified in rapeseed oil, and hydrocarbons, furans, ketones, acids, benzene, and aldehydes were detected by GC-MS. The number of formed volatile compounds increased as storage time increased, but no increase in these compounds was detected by GC-MS.

  • In recent years, macroalgal bloom occurs frequently in coastal oceans worldwide. It might be attributed to accelerating climate change. "Green tide" events caused by proliferation of green macroalgae (Ulva spp.) not only damage the local economy, but also harm coastal environments. These nuisance events have become common across several coastal regions of continents. In Korea, green tide incidences are readily seen throughout the year along the coastlines of Jeju Island, particularly the northeastern coast, since the 2000s. Ulva species are notorious to be difficult for morphology-based species identification due to their high degrees of phenotypic plasticity. In this study, to investigate temporal variation in Ulva community structure on Jeju Island between 2015 and 2020, chloroplast barcode tufA gene was sequenced and phylogenetically analyzed for 152 specimens from 24 sites. We found that Ulva ohnoi and Ulva pertusa known to be originated from subtropical regions were the most predominant all year round, suggesting that these two species contributed the most to local green tides in this region. While U. pertusa was relatively stable in frequency during 2015 to 2020, U. ohnoi increased 16% in frequency in 2020 (36.84%), which might be associated with rising sea surface temperature from which U. ohnoi could benefit. Two species (Ulva flexuosa, Ulva procera) of origins of Europe should be continuously monitored. The findings of this study provide valuable information and molecular genetic data of genus Ulva occurring in southern coasts of Korea, which will help mitigate negative influences of green tide events on Korea coast.
