  • In this paper, we have measured the fundamental properties of chime stone for Pyeongyeong. The properties are measured by wave propagation in the stone without destroying the stones, the measured properties are the chime stone density, natural frequencies of extensional wave and bending wave, and Young's modulus which is calculated by the measured properties. To find a value for Young's modulus, the fundamental frequencies which are obtained through spectrum analysis of extensional wave and bending wave are used. We calculated Young's modulus of chime stone by theoretical study and measurement on extensional wave and bending wave of the beam. As a result, we obtained Young's modulus by the fundamental frequencies of extensional wave and bending wave which deviation is within 2%.

  • This paper presents the investigation of the propagation behavior of bulk longitudinal waves generated by an ultrafast laser system in thin films. A train of femtosecond laser pulses was focused onto the surface of a 150-nm thick metallic (chromium or aluminum) film on a silicon substrate to excite elastic waves, and the change in thermoreflectance at the spot was monitored to detect the arrival of echoes from the film/substrate interface. The experimental results show that the film material characteristics such as the wave velocity and Young's modulus can be evaluated through curve-fitting in numerical solutions. The material properties of nanoscale thin films are difficult to measure using conventional techniques. Therefore, this research provides an effective method for the nondestructive characterization of nanomaterials.

  • The interference phenomenonof a dynamic crack propagation in a inclined DEN(double edge notched) specimen has been investigated by using the dynamic photoelasticity. One crack initiated by static loading is propagated dynamically and experiences a mixed mode condition(interference) as the crack approaches to the inclined edge notch. We use the overdeterministic least-square method to extract dynamic $K_{Id}$ K sub IId/and .sigma. $_{ox}$from the recorded dynamic photoelastic pattern surounding a running crack. The evaluated $K_{Id}$ $K_{IId}$and .sigma. $_{ox}$together with the crack propagation velocity estimate the dynamic crack interference phenomenonenonon

  • P wave travel-time delays have been analyzed and average travel-time anomalies due to lateral variation of the crustal structure have been calculated at the broad-band earthquake observatories of Korea Meteorology Administration (KMA) using the teleseismic deata collected during the period from 2000 to 2001. Maximum variation in the relative travel-time residuals is almost 1.5 seconds Azimuthal variation in the travel-time residuals is observed to indicate the existence of lateral P velocity heterogeneity beneath the stations with velocity contrasts of -4~4%. The estimated average travel-time delays are ranging from 0.05 to 0.3 seconds at the stations including Seoul, Chuncheon, Kanneung, Uljin, and Ulleung Island showing slow velocity contrasts of 0~4% P through the crust. Faster velocity contrasts of 0~4% have been observed at the stations including Seosan, Taejeon, Daegu, Seoguipo, and Busan showing average travel-time delays ranging from -0.05 to -0.3 seconds.

  • Structural stress under shock or impact load is varied with the lapse of time and the structural stress is called stress wave. Propagating longitudinal stress wave is studied in a 2-dimensional plate. A finite element program for elastic stress wave propagation is developed in order to investigate the shape of stress field at time increment. The longitudinal stress wave is generated by unit step function. According to the finite element analysis results, the longitudinal stress wave propagates to the similar direction of impact load and the front of stress wave propagates with the same speed as analytic solution and the shape of stress field is similar to that of analytic solution. The shear wave is occurred after the longitudinal stress wave and declined at an angle of 45 degrees compared with longitudinal stress wave and the speed of shear wave is about a half of the longitudinal stress wave. The intensity of shear wave is larger than that of longitudinal stress wave.

  • In this research, we study the propagation of longitudinal and transverse waves through a metal rod including a liquid layer using computational and experimental analyses. The propagation characteristics of longitudinal and transverse waves obtained by the computational and experimental analyses were consistent with the wave propagation theory for both cases, that is, the homogeneous metal rod and the metal rod including a liquid layer. The fluid-structure interaction modeling technique developed for the computational wave propagation analysis in this research can be applied to the more complex structures including solid-liquid interfaces.

  • The ultrasonic longitudinal wave velocities propagating normal to the surface in thin plates were measured with the amplitude spectrum method. The accuracy of the velocity measurement in o.5mm thick plates was 0.1%. In 4.239mm thick plate the phase velocities at the frequency band of 5MHz-15MHz were measured with the phase spectrum method and the amplitude spectrum method, and the velocity difference between two methods was less than 20m/s.

  • Laboratory tests for measuring absorption, porosity, P-wave velocity and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) were performed to examine weathering characteristics of ilmenite by microorganism. Physical property changes were quantitatively estimated with comparing culture period on the condition of abiotic oxidation without microorganism and biooxidation with microorganism. As a result, the measured pH during 45 days was distributed in the range from 3.82 to 4.26, on the other hand, biooxidation showed the range from 2.20 to 2.57. The measured absorption according to microorganism and culture period represented 0.052% at final stage in the case of abiotic oxidation and 0.073% in the case of biooxidation. Porosity showed 0.206% at final stage in the case of abiotic oxidation and 0.281% in the case of biooxidation. In general, the values by biooxidation showed higher than that by abiotic oxidation. Change range of P-wave velocity with culture period showed that the measured value as 1410 m/s at final stage in the case of biooxidation was lower than 1886 m/s of that in the case of abiotic oxidation. The UCS was decreased with increasing culture period in all specimens and represented 241.1 MPa at final stage in the case of abiotic oxidation and 140.0 MPa in the case of bioxidation. In conclusion, it implies that influence of physical property on ilmenite by biooxidation related with microorganism was larger than that by abiotic oxidation.

  • When the pressure tubes(f are in contact with the calandria tube(CT) in the pressurized heavy water reactor(PHWR), the temperature difference between inner and outer wall of W results in a thermal diffusion of hydrogen (deuterium) and hydride blisters are formed on the outer surface of PT. Because the hydride blisters and zirconium matrix are acoustically continuous, it is not easy to distinguish the blisters from the matrix with conventional ultrasonic method. An ultrasonic velocity ratio method was developed to detect small hydride blisters on the zirconium pressure tube. Hydride blisters were grown in the PT specimen using a steady state thermal diffusion device. The flight times of longitudinal echo and reflected shear echo from the outer surface were measured accurately. The velocity ratio of the longitudinal wave to the shear wave was calculated and displayed using contour plot. Compared to the conventional flight time method of longitudinal wave, the velocity ratio method shows superior sensitivity to detect smaller blisters as well as better images for the blister shapes. Detectable limit of the outer shape of the hydride blisters was conservatively estimated as $500{\mu}m$, with the same specifications of ultrasonic transducer used in the actual PHWR pressure tube inspection.
