Classification and Nomenclature of Fruit Commodities in South Korea and Codex Alimentarius Commission (과일류의 명칭 및 분류: 국내와 코덱스 비교)

  • The objective of this study was to find out a nomenclature and a code number for fruit commodities from the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex) corresponding with a commodity name used in South Korea. In addition, nomenclature or classification for commodity that needs an alteration or detailed examination domestically was determined. In this study, 'Food Code (Korean and English version)' and 'Pesticide MRLs in Food' from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and 'Codex Classification of Foods and Animal Feeds' were used. As results, regarding a nomenclature or classification used in South Korea, it appeared that alteration or further examination was needed for the following (English name of commodity, coming from an English version of Food Code). First, reconsiderations for classification of Chinese matrimony vine, fig, five-flavor magnolia vine, and pomegranate are needed as they are classified differently between Korea and Codex. Second, in any case of Korean or English language, nomenclature of commodity is different even within Korea or when it is compared with Codex. Such commodities are: Asian citron, Chinese bush cherry, Chinese matrimony vine, coconut, crimson glory vine, date palm, five-flavor magnolia vine, five-leaf chocolate vine, Japanese apricot, Japanese cornelian cherry, jujube, kiwifruit (golden kiwi), Korean black berry, Korean raspberry, kumquat, lychee, mandarin, persimmon, plum, quince, raspberry, and trifoliate orange. Third, reconsiderations for peach and raspberry nomenclatures are needed as it is currently unclear whether 'peach' includes nectarine and an English nomenclature, 'raspberry', is used in Korea for both various varieties (red, black) and one specific variety.

Estate Planning among the U.S. Elderly - Focusing on Wills - (미국 노인층의 자산 상속 계획 - 유언장 준비를 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate older people's planning for estate distribution by examining the factors associated with their will-holding status. This study used data from the 1994 Assets and Health Dynamics among the Oldest Old (AHEAD) Survey, Wave One. The objectives of this study were (a) to establish profiles of older people who have a written will and to compare their financial portfolios across will-holding status; (b) to identify factors that influence the decision to make a will, and (c) to draw implications for family economists, financial educators, planners, and policy makers. The results suggested that a household's financial resources (i.e., liquid and illiquid assets, housing equity, and household income) positively influence the probability of having a will. Older people who resided in a community property state and who were in poor health were less likely to be will-holders than their counterparts, holding financial resources and other variables constant. Demographic characteristics such as age, education, and race, and behavioral characteristic also were significant determinants of the likelihood of having a will. Volunteer participation and charitable contribution, which are proxies for altruism, increased the likelihood of having a will. The probability of having a will also was higher among those who had life insurance and had gwen inter-vivos gifts of more than $\$5,000$ to their children or grandchildren in the past 10 years. On the other hand, the likelihood of having a will declined with increasing number of biological children. From the findings, implications for financial planners and educators were suggested along with directions for future research.

Conception Types of Elementary School Students about the Moon Phase Changes and the Suggestions and Effects of Teaching Methods (초등학생들의 달의 위상변화에 대한 개념 유형과 수업 방법의 제안 및 효과)

  • This study noted that elementary school students were unable to accurately comprehend the principles of moon phase changes and that teachers themselves lacked a full understanding of it as well. Therefore, this study classifies conception types through 161 5th grade respondents and suggests how to change students' conception types through the use of reconstructed teaching and learning materials (that have been developed in existing studies). It verified the changes in the learning achievement of 129 5th grade respondents and analyzed how to think about reconstructed teaching and learning materials through four teacher respondents and four 5th grade respondents from the same study. The results of this study are as follows: First, the conception types on moon phase changes were classified into C and W types. W types consisted of W1, W2, W3, W4, and W5 types. Students had difficulty in understanding the principles of a waxing crescent moon and first quarter phase changes. Second, the group taking classes, which implemented reconstructed teaching and learning materials, showed greater improvement in learning achievement posttest and long-term tests compared to those who have not. Finally, teachers and students reacted positively to the reconstructed teaching and learning materials as shown in exit survey results. In conclusion, it is suggested that teachers are better off utilizing reconstructed teaching and learning materials so that elementary school students may fully understand the principles of moon phase changes rather than just memorizing the results.

Biological Mechanism of Somatization : Mainly Focused on the Neuropsychological Model of Somatization (신체화의 생물학적 기전 : 신체화의 신경심리학적 모델을 중심으로)

  • Somatization disorder is a chronic condition characterized by multiple somatic complaints that are not due to any apparent organic illness. Somatization disorder is related historically to hysteria and hysteria has been defined by the existence of somatic complaints for which no organic reason can be found. Therefore most theories of somatization have focused on the psychodynamic and sociological perspectives. However, the concept that the somatic presentation of emotional distress or psychiatric illness might have a neurobiological basis has also aroused considerable interest. Relative to this perspective, the case of Anna O. which has been considered the prototype of hysteria, was reformulated from a neuropsychological perspective. Several neurophysiological and neuropsychological studies, studies concerning hemispheric differences in symptom presentation of the patients with hysteria have been shown the evidences for the biological basis of somatization. Moreover, recent neuroimaging studies in somatization disorder also show that brain dysfunction in somatization. The author reviewed several candidate theories which could help to explain the process of somatization in the perspective of biological basis and proposed the new neuropsychological model of somatization. The author also examined the possible application of this model to the treatment of somatization disorder and discussed it's limitation and the future directions in this field.

The Analysis on Competitiveness of Railroad Transport Focused on Container, Cement, Steel (컨테이너, 양회, 철강을 중심으로 한 철도의 화물수송경쟁력 분석)

  • The modal spilt of highway has been increased and the one of railway has been decreased from 17.2%(1990) to 6.3%(2006). In this context, it is meaningful to examine the competitiveness of the railroad of Korea. The objective of this study is to analyze the competitiveness of railroad with the highway so that countermeasures improving the competitiveness of railroad could be suggested. For this, firs of all, indicators representing the competitiveness of the railroad transport are determined. The main influencing factors for mode choice include transport time, transport cost and level of service. Three types of commodity, container, cement and steel are the target for the analysis. It was found that the overall competitiveness of railroad transport is weaker compared with highway even for the main freight origin-destination pairs. It means that the freight transport system is focused on road rather than railroad. Therefore, we need to remeasure the competitiveness of railroad transport related to methods for freight railroad competitiveness improvement.

Treatment of soft Tissue Sarcoma by General Orthopedic Surgeon Rather than Orthopedic Oncologist (골연부조직 종양 전공자가 아닌 일반 정형외과 전문의에 의해 치료된 연부조직육종)

  • Purpose: To investigate the quality of training hospital based treatment, we evaluated the soft tissue sarcoma treatments afforded by general orthopedic surgeon rather than orthopedic oncologist. Materials and Methods: We reviewed the details of 25 patients with pathologically confirmed soft tissue sarcoma who registered in our hospital between July 1997 and 2006 September. We evaluated initial diagnoses, the surgical treatment (including adjuvant therapy) and the follow up method used and related these to the principles of soft tissue sarcoma treatment. Results: The study cohort comprised 16 men and 9 women of mean age of 50.2 years. A diagnostic biopsy was performed in 9(36%) cases before definitive surgical treatment. Wide excision was performed in 13(52%) cases. For the 12 cases in which the grade of sarcoma was estimated, adequate surgical treatment with adjuvant therapy was performed only in 4(33.3%) cases. In addition, an adequate follow up schedule was adopted in only 4(16%) of the 25 study subjects. Conclusion: Unexpectedly, many cases of soft tissue sarcoma were treated inadequately even in a training hospital. An intensive education program on the treatment of soft tissue sarcoma is necessary for all orthopedic surgeons.

Effects of Flow Direction and Consolidation Pressure on Hydraulic Resistance Capacity of Soils (흐름방향과 압밀응력이 지반의 수리저항특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Big tidal differences, which range from 3.0 m to 8.0 m, exist with regional locations at south and west shores of Korea. Under this ocean circumstance, since a large scour may occur due to multi-directional tidal current and transverse stress of the wind, the scour surrounding the wind turbine structure can make instability of the system due to unexpected system vibration. The hydraulic resistance capacity of soils consolidated under different pressures are evaluated by Erosion Function Apparatus (EFA) under unidirectional and bi-directional flows in this study. It was found that the flow direction change affects significantly on the sour rate and critical shear stress, regardless of soil types while the consolidation pressure affects mainly cohesive soil. Among geotechnical parameters, the undrained shear strength can be well-correlated with the hydraulic resistance capacity, regardless soil type while the shear wave velocity shows the proportional relationships with the hydraulic resistance capacities of fine grained soil and coarse grained soil, respectively.

Effect of friction from differing vertical bracket placement on the force and moment of NiTi wires (브라켓의 수직적 변위에 따른 마찰이 NiTi wire의 힘과 모멘트에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of force and moment produced by Nickel-titanium wires of different sizes at activation and deactivation according to differing vertical bracket displacement. Methods: Superelastic NiTi wires of 3 different sizes (0.014", 0.016", and 0.016" ${\times}$ 0.022") were tied with elastomeric or 0.009-inch stainless steel ligations in a twin-bracket, 0.018-inch slot. A testing machine recorded the effects of simulated activation of 5 distances from 1 to 5 mm and deactivation of 5 distances from 4 to 0 mm, in increments of 1 mm. Results: Frictional force increased the wire stiffness during loading. Ligation of 0.014-inch NiTi wire with O-ring resulted in a significant increase in the stiffness. On application of orthodontic force for 5 mm of vertical displacement of teeth, the effective displacement in the case of the 0.014", 0.016", and 0.016" ${\times}$ 0.022" NiTi wires was 2 mm, 3 mm, and 4 mm, respectively. Conclusions: Our results showed that movement of teeth with large vertical displacement was ineffective because of excessive friction. This finding might contribute to the understanding of the force system required for effective teeth movement and thereby facilitate the application of the appropriate light wire for leveling and alignment.

Industrial Fluctuations and Locality of Busan with Records (기록으로 본 부산의 산업변동과 로컬리티)

  • This study analyzes the process of growth of Busan from a fishing village to the capital city of South Gyeongsang Province and the central city of transportation and commerce, and an industry with records. The results of the analysis are as follows: after the port opened in 1876, there has been a decline in settlement spaces in Dongnae; on the other hand, there has been an increase in migration spaces around the port of Busan. Waegwan (倭館) nearby Yongdusan Mountain (龍頭山) was changed to the Japanese concession; thus, the number of Japanese moving into Busan had rapidly increased. As a result, the Japanese government carried out reclamation work for securing available lands for the construction of port facilities and other facilities. The Japanese government built public offices and houses, as well as production facilities for daily necessities around the port of Busan. The opening of the Seoul Busan railway (京釜線) and the cross-channel liner between Busan and Shimonoseki (釜關連絡船) led to the growth of Busan and the development of its status. At this time, as the main industry of Busan was trade, Busan had grown as a commercial city. As Busan had grown as a central city of transportation and commerce, the provincial government building of Gyeongsangnam-do (慶尙南道) moved to Busan. Thus, Busan became the central city of local politics and administration. After the Land Survey Project, a large scale of farmers were recruited for low-wage work in the new port. Because of the abolition of the corporation law, Japanese capitalists moved into their colony in Busan. There, large-scale factories, such as the Joseon cotton textile factory, were established. Through this process, the locality of Busan was changed from a fishing village to a commercial city and, finally, to a city of commerce and industry.

Assesment of Zeolite, Montmorillonite, and Steel Slag for Interrupting Heavy Metals Release from Contaminated Marine Sediments for Capping Thickness of Reactive materials (오염된 해양퇴적물에서 중금속 용출 차단을 위한 제올라이트, 몬모릴로나이트, 제강슬래그의 적용성 평가)

  • This study aims to assess the effectiveness of zeolite, montmorillonite, and steel slag as capping materials to block the release of heavy metals from marine sediment depending on their depths. The results showed that all capping materials used this study were not effective in interrupting release of As. Zeolite had negative effect on the block of Cr release but it was significantly reduced to 5 cm by montmorillonite capping. In contrast to As and Cr, Cd, Ni, and Pb were not released even from uncapped sediments. Cu and Zn were the heavy metals those were most significantly influenced by the capping conditions. Cu release from marine sediments were effectively blocked by more than 1 cm depth of montmorillonite and more than 3 cm depth of zeolite. All capping materials were found to be effective in interrupting release of Zn from marine sediments. It was concluded that the zeolite, montmorillonite, and steel slag could be used as a potential capping material for interrupting the release of Cr, Cu, and Zn from the contaminated marine sediments.
