  • The safety aspects of ship handing have become increasingly important recently, due to the changes in sea transportation. These are characterizes by larger units, increased traffic density on sea lane, sea transport of dangerous cargo, etc. In addition, as a economic aspect of ship handing, it has obtained an increased attention in connection with port development and consideration of allowable ship size for existing ports. One method for evaluation of maneuvering problems is simulation on a computer by means of a mathematical model of the ship maneuvering motion. The present report describes the elements of a mathematical model for ship maneuvering and gives some results of maneuvering predictions through the simulation.

  • Free running model tests gives us only maneuvering indices not hydrodynamic derivatives. For this reason, system identification method has been applied to the measured data to identify mathematical model describing hydrodynamic force. However It is difficult to obtain complete set of maneuvering derivatives because of strong correlation of sway velocity and yaw rate. Therefore, in this paper, we assumed that sway velocity related coefficients would be obtained by oblique towing test. and then proposed new procedure to estimate yaw related coefficients. To do this, correlation and regression analyses were carried out to establish modified model and estimate maneuvering derivatives. Also D-optimal rudder input scenario was found based on the modified model and confirmed the validity of its sufficient richness as a input scenario.

  • It was important to estimate the full-scale operating performance including actual RPM and engine power of a ship since the operation efficiency during a voyage could be evaluated from the values. In the previous research, an entire voyage was simulated by following recorded speeds obtained from AIS and full-scale measurement data. Although reasonable tendencies were observed in the estimated speed, actual RPM, and engine power, it was impossible for them to be completely corresponded with the measured values due to the difference between actual operation and mathematical model. In this paper, alternative approaches to cope with the speed, actual RPM, and engine power were suggested by following the given speed, RPM, and power respectively. After entire voyages were simulated according to a given value, the effects of the value on the estimated performance were investigated. And, it was confirmed that the appropriate approach could be differently chosen according to the aim of the simulation or given value.

  • Hydrodynamic coefficients should be accurately estimated to predict the maneuverability of underwater vehicles. Various captive model tests have been performed as part of estimation methods for these coefficients. Estimating hydrodynamic coefficients related to roll motion is important because underwater vehicles are sensitive to changes of roll moment. In this research, a pure roll motion equipment was newly designed to simply estimate hydrodynamic coefficients with respect to roll motion. Roll motion was implemented through a brief mechanical mechanism. The principle of operation, application process, and system identification of the equipment are described. An analysis method of the pure roll test is also suggested. Repeated tests of the newly equipment were carried out to check its reproducibility.

  • During flight the analysis of aircraft data recorded has played an important role in determining the causes of accidents. However, using the QAR, recently some airlines have begun to analyze flight data from uneventful airline flights to identify potential problems and correct them before they lead to accident. This paper, after the flight using the recorded data in QAR, proposes an estimated method which determines CL/CD values. The generalized aircraft dynamic equations were expressed as an estimated equation, which verified the effectiveness with simulation. The results of the present method showed that the understand of variation values of CL/CD is of great use for performance enhancement.

  • In general, ships are towed to keep the safe operations in harbor or channel by tug boats. Due to increase in ocean traffic, many accidents are happened in harbor or channel in these days. Therefore it is necessary to predict manoeuvrability of tug-barge system, and to assure the safety of that system. Turg-barge system is composed of tug boat, barge, and towing cable, connecting both ships. Manoeuvring equations of tug-barge system are suggested, and the scopes of model tests are discussed to establish the mathematical models for tug boats in this paper.

  • In this paper, we propose a low-complexity carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation algorithm for OFDM based wireless LAN, IEEE 802.11a. The complexity of the arctangent operation to calculate the argument of auto-correlation for CFO estimation is reduced by a novel range pointer method. The proposed algorithm estimates fine CFO value first and then based on the fine CFO value, simple criteria is used for the boundary decision of integer CFO estimation. The simulation results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is slightly better than the conventional method while the computational complexity is reduced by 50%. Furthermore, the proposed method can be easily implemented for the low complex next generation MIMO-OFDM based WLAN systems.

  • In this paper, an experimental optical head tracker system is designed and constructed. The system is composed of the infrared LEDs and two infrared CCD cameras to filter out the interference of another light in the limited environment like the cockpit. Then the optical head tracker algorithm is designed by using the feature detection algorithm and the 3D motion estimation algorithm. The feature detection algorithm, used to obtain the 2D position coordinates of the features on the image plane, is implemented by using the thresholding and the masking techniques. The 3D motion estimation algorithm which estimates the motion of a pilot's head is implemented by using the extended Kalman filter (EKF). Also, we used the precise rate table to verify the performance of the experimental optical head tracker system and compared the rotational performance of this system with the inertial sensor.

  • At ship design stage, the maneuverability is generally estimated based on the empirical formula or the computational fluid dynamic (CFD), which is one of the numerical simulation methods. Using the hydrodynamic derivatives derived through these methods can quantitatively estimate the maneuverability of target vessels and evaluate indirect maneuverability. Nevertheless, research on estimating maneuverability is insufficient for ships not subject to IMO maneuverability standard, especially fishing vessels, and even at the design stage, the empirical formula developed for merchant ships is applied without modification. An estimation error may occur due to the empirical formula derived from the regression analysis results of a model test if the empirical formula developed for merchant ships with different hull shapes is applied to fishing vessels without any modification. In this study, the modified empirical formula that can more accurately estimate the fishing vessel's maneuverability was derived by including the hull shape parameter of target fishing trawlers in the regression analysis process that derives Kijima et al. (1990) formula. As a result, the modified empirical formula showed an average estimation error of 6%, and the result improved the average error of 49% of Kijima et al. (1990) formula developed for merchant ships.

  • The various model tests are carried out to estimate and verify a ship performance in the design stage. But in view of the cost, the model test should be applied to every project vessel is very inefficient. Therefore, other methods of predicting the maneuverability with confined data are required at the initial design stage. The purpose of this study is to estimate the hydrodynamic derivatives by using the multiple regression analysis and PMM test data. The characteristics of the stern shape which has an important effect on the maneuverability are applied to the regression analysis in this study. The correlation analysis is performed to select the proper hull form coefficients and stern shape factors used as the variables in the regression analysis. The comparative analysis of estimate results and model test results is conducted on two ships to investigate the effectiveness of the maneuvering hydrodynamic derivatives estimation applied the stern shape. Through the present study, it is verified that the estimation using the stern shape factors as the variables are valid when the stern shape factors are located in the center of the database.
