  • The mobility (degree of freedom) of mechanisms can be regarded as independent coordinate to define its position. This concept is essential for kinematics, and for designing mechanisms in the practical point of view. Gruebler's equation has been applied to estimate the mobility using number of links and joints of a mechanism. In practical case, there are many types of mechanisms, which transfer motion by direct contact between two links. However, no exact kinematic definition has existed for the joint that the contact takes place in a mechanism. In this paper, a new concept of contact joint is defined and modified Gruebler's equation is suggested to calculate mobility of a mechanism with the joint. This concept would be useful in mechanism design because it will be possible to manage many contact mechanisms with kinematic exactness.

  • We presented design methodology of constant velocity joint for passenger cars using design of experiment. On the basis of contact normal stress of internal components of constant velocity joints, we performed a sensitivity analysis of several design parameters. And then we performed robust design and optimization design process. As a result, we could find robust design and also propose the optimized design. Presented design process would be very helpful for engineers who are suffer for new constant velocity joint design.

  • For the bolted joint of the composite structure, quasi-isotropic stacking is generally used to increase the bearing strength. For the bolted joint of uni-directional composite, the fatigue life limit of the bolted joint can be improved by applying clamping force though the static strength is still very low. In this paper, the static and fatigue characteristics of hybrid joint are investigated which can overcome the disadvantage of the bolted joint of uni-directional composite under static loading by applying adhesive joining. The experimental result shows that the static strength and fatigue life can be improved by applying clamping force to the hybrid joint and the hybrid joint is a good solution for the efficiency of the composite structures.

  • Structural details of the three-bay-straw-roof house which was the most common form of residence as a commoner's house during ancient period are suggested. Wooden frames are used in the house. The typical form of joint used is Sagaemachum. The static lateral loading capacity of the frames is evaluated through the test on full scale models. The effects of joint type at the column head and wooden lattice on the lateral loading capacity and the failure modes of frames are analyzed. The ultimate lateral loading capacity and displacement of the ordinary frame at failure are 1.090 N and 400 mm(1/6rad), respectively. These values for the frame with high column are 4,160 N and 250 mm(1/9.6rad), respectively. The behavior of joint at column head controls the overall lateral loading capacity of the frame and shows very large nonlinearity. The general failure modes of joint for an ordinary frame and a frame with high column are shear and bending failure at the branches of Sagaemachum, respectively.

  • This study focuses on the design of a mechanical joint for a zero moment crane (ZMC), which is a specialized loading/unloading system used in a mobile harbor (MH). The mechanical joint is based on the concept of zero moment point (ZMP), and it plays an important role in stabilizing a ZMC. For effective stabilization, it is necessary to ensure that the mechanical joint is robust to a wide variety of loads; further, the joint must allow the structures connected to it to perform rotational motion with two degrees of freedom By adopting a traditional design process, we designed a new mechanical joint; in this design, a universal joint is coupled with a spherical joint, and then, deformable rolling elements are incorporated. The rolling elements facilitate load distribution and help in decreasing power loss during loading/unloading. Because of the complexity of the proposed system, Kriging-based approximate optimization method is used for enhancing the optimization efficiency. In order to validate the design of the proposed mechanical joint, a structural analysis is performed, and a small-scale prototype is built.

  • The driving methods of car are front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and four wheel drive. At driving methods, constant velocity joint is the most important part at carrying out two functions for converting to the direction which the driver wants and transferring the power to wheels. At driving on the road, the impact can be applied to the parts transmitting power according to the state of road surface. In this study, each models of three constant velocity joints whose shaft length are different respectively were modelled with CATIA and the structural and fatigue analyses were carried out by using ANSYS. This study result is thought to be the useful material at designing the constant velocity joint with the durability against impact. And it is possible to be grafted onto the convergence technique at the design of constant velocity joint and show the esthetic sense.

  • Due to reduced self weight and alleviated wind effect, the multi-column wind towers that consist of a number of circular tubes as vertical members interconnected with horizontal brace members can be a substitute for the large-scale single cylinder wind towers. It is critical to guarantee strengths of tubular joints where vertical and horizontal members are structurally connected in order to make the whole multi-column system behave as a single tower structure. In this study, strength evaluation has been conducted for T-type tubular joints that are applicable in multi-column towers. Four of available design codes, i.e., AISC, Eurocode3, ISO 19902, CIDECT have been investigated and predictor equations in the considered design codes were validated and discussed through parametric numerical study on slenderness ratios of chords and braces at joints.

  • Generally, joints are the weakest part in the composite structures. Composite joints can be classified into adhesive joints and mechanical joints, and mechanical joints are mainly used in areas less sensitive to environmental conditions. In this paper, the failure loads of composite mechanical joints with five different stacking angles are tested and predicted. Finite element analysis of mechanical joints were performed and failure loads were predicted by the FAI(Failure Area Index) method using Tsai-Wu and Yamada-Sun failure criteria, and the predicted failure loads were compared with experimental results. From the experiment and analysis, the failure loads of the mechanical joints were decreased as the ratio of 0 degree layer was low and they could be predicted within 13.03% using the FAI method and Yamada-Sun failure criteria.

  • RC (Reinforced Concrete) member has varying service life due to varying diffusion characteristics with loading conditions even if it is exposed to constant exterior conditions. In the paper, quantitative parameters are obtained through adopting the previous results for effects of compressive, tensile, and cold joint on chloride diffusion in OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) and GGBFS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) concrete. Service life is evaluated in RC simple beam with 10.0m of span through increasing loading from self weight (2.5kN/m) to the loading to cracking moment (5.5kN/m). In OPC concrete without cold joint, service life changes to 89.4% for tensile region and 101% for compressive region with loadings while GGBFS concrete has 80.0% and 106%, respectively. For cold joint area, GGBFS concrete shows much reduced service life to 82~80% in compressive region and 69~61% in tensile region, which is caused by the lower diffusion in normal condition but relatively higher increasing cold joint effect than OPC concrete.
