  • The floating crane is used to lift the heavyweight on the ocean. The floating crane has a winch system for lifting the heavyweight and the system is controlled by the winch control system. The heavyweight is lifted safely by control of the winch control system. Before the make the control system and controller, there are many restricted conditions to test and validate at design and development steps. In order to solve the problems, commonly use the HILS (Hardware-In-the-Loop-Simulation). HILS is the method of test and validation for the hardware control system. It can be composed of the control system in hardware with surrounding environments which is a virtual model. In this study, we developed the winch system model for HILS of the 150t winch control system in a floating crane. Through this simulation and winch model, it can be applied to HILS for the winch control system.

  • We tried to establish the history of outbreaks and control methods of 'hwangchung' in Joseon Dynasty, uncovering the biological reality of the 'hwangchung' (called hwang or bihwang) analyzed through the Database program on 'the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty' and 'the Emollment of Haegoeje', two of the finest examples of classical historical records. The total number of articles on the outbreak of the hwangchung is 261 in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and 65 in the Emollment of Haegoeje. There were four peaks by hwangchung throughout the Joseon Era. Among them, the periods of King Taejo to King Sejong had the highest incidence. By comparing the number of records of the hwangchung from the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty with that in the Emollment of Haegoeje during the same period, results show the former was less than the latter, 35 vs 65. However, both records were relatively inconsistent with each other. Insect pests in forests as well as in agriculture were included in the biological identities of the hwangchung in the Joseon Dynasty periods, which is in accordance with those of Saigo's. The taxonomic identity could be confirmed in only 25 cases (9.5%) among the articles on hwangchung. It largely coincided with Paik's opinion: II in armyworm, nine in moth larva, one in rice stem borer, two in migratory locust, one in planthopper and one in rice-plant weevil. Therefore, it is not reasonable to regard hwangchung as a migratory locust or grasshopper only. The number of reports on the occurrence of hwangchung in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty was 173 (66% of the total) and 47% of them were just simple reports, which means the report itself on the appearance of hwangchung was very significant. The reports on controlling insect pests were of low frequency, in 20% (34 cases) of the total reports, capturing insect pests or holding traditional ceremony called 'Poje'. Among them, only one case related to the treatment of seeds to prevent the damage by hwangchung was published in the King Sejong period. There were 37 discussions about changes and management of government policies due to disasters by hwangchung. They were mostly about relief or tax cut to the people who suffered damage and about cancellation of recruiting people to military training, constructing castles, and so on. It seems that not only the people but also the king was influenced by the hwangchung. In the case of King Seongjong, he referred to the stress of the prevention measure of locusts in 10 articles. The damage also had an effect on abdication in the reign of King Jeongjong.

  • This study introduces a new cruise ship design model with residence concept by carrying out a specific design procedure on the regionally and culturally characterized cruise model. Cruise ship design requires a combined approach with architectural design skills, shipbuilding techniques and even the knowledge of business management. Contrary to the traditional cargo ship design in which the design of residence area on the top of cruise ship is performed first and then the lower part of the ship structure is determined as a final step, a top-down procedure for the conceptual ship design is adopted.

  • This paper aims to investigate the characteristics of house site selection and its expression of building through manuscript of Taegdanggip which was authored by Lee-sik in the middle of Chosun dynasty. Its results are summarized in the following. Firstly, as a Confucianist, Lee-sik selected his ancestor's grave site as well as his house site by means of divination sign. And then he interpreted the characteristics of the location from feng-shui perspective. Secondly, he built Taepoongdang(literally 'pond and wind house') as his house for retirement based on a trigram from the Book of Changes. He reflected the divination sign in consturcting his house Taekpoongdang. Finally, the location of Taekpoongdang and Baekagog village was well suitable to feng-shui theory.

  • In this study, 5 mural paintings in the Buddhist temples of Joseon era were researched for component analysis on the soil contained in the walls. The results of particle size analysis showed that the ratio of particle contents were different in each layer. In the finishing layer, the distribution of the middle sand fraction is higher than that of the middle layer. The results of XRD analysis showed that quartz, feldspar, and clay mineral are the main components of sand, suggesting similar mineral composition to that of ordinary soil component. It seems weathered rocks were used for construction of the walls. The main chemical components detected from EDX analysis were Si, Al, Fe, and K. Also the SEM images showed sand or clay sized minerals. In conclusion, the walls of the buddhist mural paintings in Joseon Dynasty had been constructed by using the loess, and had been produced by using mixture of clay and sand particles of different sizes for each layer. This study identified the characteristics of the materials and the manufacturing technologies used on the walls of mural paintings of Buddhist temples in Joseon era.

  • A selective catalyst reduction system (SCR) with an integrated bypass unit is proposed. Through simulations of the SCR, variations in flow to the catalyst due to the particular shape of the bypass shutting device in the SCR are also studied. The commercial software Ansys Fluent is used to develop the simulations. For the simulations, the catalyst of the SCR is modeled using the porous media method to reduce the calculation time and number of meshes, which is necessary because of the detailed modeling of the catalyst. Simulations are performed based on changes to the entrance angle to the catalyst and the size of the bypass shutting device. Finally, simulation results are used to compare and analyze the average velocity and uniformity of the flow to the catalyst.

  • This study describes the model tests in ice according to the frictional coefficient of an ice-breaking ship and the change in ice resistance by the analysis method for each component of ice resistances. The target vessel is a 90K DWT ice-breaking tanker capable of operating in ARC7 ice conditions in the Arctic Ocean, and twin POD propellers are fitted. The hull was specially painted with four different frictional coefficients on the same ship model. The total ice resistance can be separated by ice breaking, ice buoyancy, ice clearing resistances through the tests in level ice, pre-sawn ice and creep test in pre-sawn ice under sea ice thickness of 1.2 m and 1.7 m. Ice resistance was analyzed by correcting the thickness and bending strength of model ice by the ITTC correction method. As the frictional coefficient between the hull and ice increases, ice buoyancy and clearing resistances increase significantly. When the surface of the hull is rough, it is considered that the broken ice pieces do not slip easily to the side, resulting in an increase in ice buoyancy resistance. Also, the frictional coefficient was found to have a great influence on the ice clearing resistance as the ice thickness became thicker.

  • In this study, fundamental research is conducted for the generation technique and analysis of multi-directional irregular waves in the Deep Ocean Engineering Basin (DOEB). A three-dimensional boundary element method-based numerical tank is implemented to perform wave generation simulations, and directional spectrum estimation is carried out using the results of simulations. The wave generation technique of the Snake type wave maker, generating multi-directional irregular waves, is implemented using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) algorithms. The wave generation technique is validated by comparing the wave spectrum from simulations and experiments. A Maximum Likelihood Method (MLM) based estimation code is developed for estimating the directional wave spectra. The multi-directional irregular waves are tested in the DOEB and the numerical tank, and directional wave spectra obtained from two methodologies are estimated and compared. A correction procedure for the directional distribution of multi-directional waves is established, and the possibility of correcting the directional spreading function using the numerical tank is validated.

  • The variation of H/F coefficient (Hubnerite/Feberite coefficient) and the temperature of formation with depth have been studied for the hydrothermal tungsten-quartz veins from Ssangjeon, Weolag, Cheongyang, and Sannae mines. All samples were selected at the same paragenetic stage and mineral assemblege according to depth. The studied mines provide an opportunity to examine and regional variations in wolframite composition in different provinces. The formation temperature is linearly related to the depth. At the Weolag, Cheongyang and Sannae mines, the H/F ratio of wolframite and filling temperatures of fluid inclusions in quartz show a general tendency to decrease at shallow levels, in spite of different geological settings. This implies the pH of fluid will decrease vertically with falling temperature and the high H/F ratio of wolframite in deep zone result in an increase of pH with depth. The Ssangjeon mine exhibits a tendency to increase slightly upwards at shallow level. This implies a different geochemical environment (high pH environment) for the Ssangjeon mine, as compared to the other three mines. The H/F coefficient pattern suggests that it is a useful geothermometer for vein-type tungsten deposits in Korea. The H/F coefficient as an indication of depth should be examined for use in exploration.
