Twelve Japanese students living in South Korea have been examined for their perceptual identification of an initial consonant in Korean syllables with or without a white noise. A confusion matrix was then subject to analyses of additive clustering, individual difference scaling, and probability of information transmission, the results of which were also compared to those of South Koreans. The Japanese in the present experiment confused /다/and/타/ most frequently, followed by /가/ and /카/, /자, 차, 짜/, /타/ and /따/, and so on. The results of additive clustering analysis of the Japanese significantly differed from those of the South Koreans. Individual difference scaling revealed dimensions of sonorant, aspiration and coronal. While South Koreans showed binary values on aspiration and tenseness dimensions, the Japanese did continuous values on such dimensions. An information transmission probability analysis revealed that the Japanese participants could not perceive very well such larynx features as tenseness and aspiration compared to the South Korean participants. The former group, however, perceived very well place of articulation features such as labial and coronal. The present results suggest that an approach dealing with structures of base representations is important in understanding the phonological categories of languages.
Purpose: In this study, we analyzed the progression and prevalence of myopia according to age for the last five years. Methods: We have done a comparative analysis of the progression and prevalence of myopia with the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey document from 2008 to 2012. Results: According to classification of myopia by age group for the last five years, the prevalence of low myopia was 25.5% for 5-11ages group, 25.1% for 12-18ages, 27.3% for 19-29ages, 30.7% for 30-39ages, 29.6% for 40-49ages, 19.2% for 50-59ages, 11.8% for 60-69ages, and 20.2% for over 70ages respectively. The prevalence of moderate myopia was 21.7% for 5-11ages group, 43.6% for 12-18ages, 36.2% for 19-29ages, 30.0% for 30-39ages, 20.4% for 40-49ages, 9.9% for 50-59ages, 5.2% for 60-69ages, and 7.6% for over 70ages respectively. The prevalence of high myopia was 2.1% for 5-11ages group, 11.7% for 12-18ages, 11.5% for 19-29ages, 6.9% for 30-39ages, 5.6% for 40-49ages, 1.9% for 50-59ages, 1.5% for 60-69ages, and 1.0% for over 70ages respectively. Conclusions: We must recognize an importance to the increase of the progression and prevalence of myopia, so it is necessary to provide a social interest in prevention of deteriorating vision and eye health welfare.

The purpose of this study is to understand the way university students appreciate the meaning of life. The subjects were 1, 2, 3, and 4 grade students from four universities located in Gyeonggido and Gangwondo Provinces; This study was a descriptive research project conducted from March to June 2015 for the purpose of understanding how university students appreciate the meaning of life. The data, gathered from interviews with a number of university students, who are at the last stage of adolescence, were classified into 102 statements and 30 categories through a series of content analyses of certain subjects, such as the definition and importance of the meaning of life, the endeavor to make life meaningful, the moments they feel the meaning of life, and the methods they adopt to feel the meaning of life. We analyzed the ways in which university students appreciate the meaning of life. We hope this study will provide a small guide for them so that the meaning of their lives can be enriched and their feeling of well-being enhanced. In addition, it is necessary to develop appropriate measures for college students to deal with crises in their life and, thus, the results of this study could be used as an important material for the systematic development of support programs for college students. Finally, this study will provide the basis for multifaceted interventions designed to improve the physical and mental health of college students and help them to adapt to college life.

The degradation of a tunnel drainage system leads to increases in pore water pressure around the tunnel and the lining stress, which results in affecting the tunnel stability. In the present study of the Namsan 3th tunnel, more than 30 year old tunnel, the effects of the drainage performance reduction due to drain hole clogging on the tunnel lining stability were investigated by examining pore water pressure distribution around the tunnel and the lining stresses through numerical analysis. Groundwater flow modeling on the Mt. Namsan region was done first and 3D seepage and coupled stress-pore water pressure finite element analysis were performed on the tunnel using the results of the groundwater flow modeling. The pore water pressure distribution and the tunnel lining stresses could be predicted using a drain hole outflow data measured in the tunnel site. This analysis method may be used to evaluate the current stability of old tunnels for which in most cases field investigations and related information are not readily available.

Web search behavior has evolved. People now search using many diverse information devices in various situations. To monitor these scattered and shifting search patterns, an improved way of learning and analysis are needed. Traditional web search studies relied on the server transaction logs and single query instance analysis. Since people use multiple smart devices and their searching occurs intermittently through a day, a bundled query research could look at the whole context as well as penetrating search needs. To observe and analyze bundled queries, we developed a proprietary research software set including a log catcher, query bundling tool, and bundle monitoring tool. In this system, users' daily search logs are sent to our analytic server, every night the users need to log on our bundling tool to package his/her queries, a built in web survey collects additional data, and our researcher performs deep interviews on a weekly basis. Out of 90 participants in the study, it was found that a normal user generates on average 4.75 query bundles a day, and each bundle contains 2.75 queries. Query bundles were categorized by; Query refinement vs. Topic refinement and 9 different sub-categories.
The lateral bearing characteristics of large diameter drilled shaft depend greatly on the stiffness of the pile, horizontal subgrade reaction of adjacent ground. In particular, the empirical evaluation results of the horizontal subgrade reaction coefficient which are widely used in pile design are very important factors in evaluating the lateral bearing capacity of drilled shaft because the difference in bearing capacity depends on the estimated result. Nevertheless, the evaluation of the horizontal subgrade reaction coefficient on the large diameter drilled shaft is insufficient. In addition, although the range of influence and the location of the maximum moment which is the weaken zone on the pile may be correlated and relationship of these are major consideration in determining the reinforced zone of drilled shaft, the previous studies have not been evaluated it. In this study, the field test and nonlinear analysis of large diameter drilled shaft were performed to evaluate the horizontal subgrade reaction coefficient and to investigate the relationship between the influence range 1/β of the pile and the location of the maximum moment zm. In the result, the lateral bearing capacity of drilled shaft showed a difference in results by about 190% according to the empirical equation on the horizontal subgrade reaction coefficient. And the relationship between the influence range of the pile and the location of the maximum moment was evaluated as a linear relationship depending on the soil density.

In this study, we compared the use of information and communications technology (ICT) by middle school teachers in Korea and other countries utilizing the teacher survey data of the IEA International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS) 2013. The ICILS target population consisted of all students in the eighth grade. We compared Korea with Australia, the Czech Republic, Norway, and Poland, which are nations showing the highest achievements in computer and information literacy. We selected nine questions from the teacher questionnaire and divided them into the categories of computer use, use of ICT for teaching and learning, and the ICT support environment in school. In comparison to their counterparts in other countries, Korean middle school science teachers used computers frequently and also had high ICT self-efficacy. They were confident in their ability to use computers for general tasks, but not in their ability to use computers for teaching and learning. The Korean teachers also had a high percentage of utilization of presentation and graphics software. Also, the proportion of activities concerning the information provided and teacher-led tasks was high, but the proportion of activities for student collaboration or peer interaction was low. In Korea, middle school science teachers had more negative than positive views of using ICT in teaching and learning. The teachers thought that computer-related resource support and digital learning materials were insufficient and that the computer model was outdated in schools. Therefore, we propose to build an ICT infrastructure and to develop and disseminate ICT teaching and learning methods for student activities.

The purpose of this study is to present the directivity of outcome management through the analysis of public library operations in Seoul. For this purpose, author evaluated the public library policies by linking the 「Metropolitan Comprehensive Library Advancement Plan 2018~2022」 and 「The Third Comprehensive Library Advancement Plan: 2020 implementation plan」 and compiled to draw up the issue of policy development on the awareness of public library services by Seoul citizens. Nest, author analyzed and compared the core infrastructure, collection services, programs and activities of 173 public libraries in 25 local governments. Based on these results, author suggested the directivity of outcome management as follow. All public libraries in Seoul must emphasize the development scope and management methods of the performance indicators. For outcome management, this study emphasized building a strategy planning with the development procedures of performance indicators, categorizing outcome management indicators, developing user-centered indicators, and improving qualitative indicators. As there is a possibility that the quality of services expressed in the output may deteriorate due to the failure of the physical input indicators, it is necessary to strengthen the input and encourage the resolution of the service gap by establishing a performance management system to logically explain the relevance or causal relationship between these indicators.

Compared to pavement of Chinese palace gardens, those of private gardens in south part of the Yangtze River(長江) in China shows variety of patterns. In order to figure out what causes the difference in paving pattern, this article focuses on the traditional Chinese ideologies during the all time. An analysis on 'Classical Gardens of Suzhou', which has been designated as UNESCO World Heritage, was used to determine how ideologies have influence on paving pattern of Classical Gardens. As a result, various Chinese ideologies such as Nature worship, Totemism, Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, and Folk Culture were found in paving patterns of the private gardens. Pattern of sun in the Retreat & Reflection Garden(Toisawon) is an example of Nature worship among primitive beliefs of ancient China. Phoenix pattern of the Couple's Retreat Garden(Ouyuan, Liuyuan) reflects Totemistic beliefs. Confucianism is the underlying philosophy of Eight Square pattern, Six Square pattern, and Cross Square pattern. These patterns were mainly used to pave large area and easily found in many gardens. Patterns reflect Taoism are "Wufu holding life" pattern(the Five blessing holding life, 五福捧壽), Flat peach pattern, and Alluding Eight Immortals pattern. Paving patterns related to Buddhism are patterns of 'Eight treasures' and Endless knot pattern appears most frequently since it expresses concept of reincarnation well. Paving patterns shows folk culture and beliefs of the time in China are bat, butterfly, dragonfly, frog, carp, and coin(ingot).
