  • The spherical flange was designed to apply to a cryogenic high pressure pipe of a liquid rocket engine. It is designed that the spherical flange is able to be assembled and kept airtight up to $2.5^{\circ}$ of the axial misalignment between the combined components. It increases the degree of freedom of the engine assembly. The spherical flange is composed of a ball and socket joint, a metal seal, spherical type bolts and washers. The prototype was verified by leak test at the room temperature and the cryogenic temperature. Additionally the strength test and the destructive test were performed at the room temperature.

  • In this paper, to compensate the degraded performance in high-resolution infrared sensor due to assembling error, the influence of each component was evaluated through the sensitivity analysis of lens assembly, axis mirror, and detector and also suggested detector tilt mechanism for compensation. 3 detector tilt mechanisms were investigated. The first one is 'Shim plate' method which is applying shim on installing plane. The second one is 'Tilting screw' method that is using tilt screw for adjusting detection plane. The last one is 'Micrometer head' method that is installing micrometer on detection plane and acquiring quantitative data. Based on the investigation result, 'Tilting screw' method was applied due to ease of user control, small volume, and real-time controllability, thereby we could acquire high-resolution infrared images. The research result shows that the tilting mechanism is necessary technology for the implementation of high-resolution infrared imaging system.

  • Generally, the gap-and-sag method is used in the shipbuilding stage before coupling the shafts to check whether they are installed at the same position as designed and derived from shaft alignment calculation. The primary installed propeller shaft becomes a reference point, the position of the remaining shafts are sequentially determined through the gap-and-sag value derived from the deflection and deflection angle at each shaft flange by own weight. If the reference point varies against the design value, it would have a series of effects on the installation of the remaining shafts. Moreover, after coupling the shafts, even if the bearing reaction forces derived from measurement are satisfied by the allowable limit range, consequently it might have an adverse effect on the stability of the shafting system by not being able to estimate the relative slope angle between the propeller shaft and the after-stern tube bearing. In this paper, to deal with above-mentioned phenomenon, the theoretical calculations related to designing an effective support point of the aft stern tube bearing and analysis by measurement is conducted through a case of open-up inspections. Based on this, a shaft installation guideline is proposed to minimize the misalignment related to preventing wiping damage of the after-stern tube bearing.

  • In this paper, we address a design problem and a case study of a K-stage inspection system, which is composed of K stages, each of which includes an inspection process and a rework process. Assuming the type I and II errors of inspectors and the re-inspection policy for items classified as good, we determine the smallest integer of K which can achieve a given target defective rate. If K does not exist, holding the current values of the type I, II errors, we search reversely a new vector, (the defective rate of an assembly line, the defective rate of a rework process), which can give the target defective rate. Our formulas and methodology based on our K-stage inspection system could be applied and extended to similar situations with slight modifications.

  • Aircraft should be equipped with various external stores for mission performance. Since these external stores may cause structural instability of aircraft, an evaluation of the effects between the aircraft and the external stores is required. For this purpose, an aircraft dynamic characteristics analysis reflecting an external store was performed, and the finite element model for the analysis of aircraft dynamic characteristics should simulate the dynamic characteristics of the component as accurately as possible while using a minimum of the nodes and elements. In this study, a stick model was constructed for dynamic characteristics analysis of the external fuel tank and installation pylon using MSC Patran/Nastran. For the calculation of the equivalent stiffness of the stick model, a simple beam theory was applied to construct the stick model of each part, and the validity of each stick models was confirmed by mode comparison with the fine model. Additionally, the model analysis of the stick model assembly, simulating a pylon equipped with an external fuel tank was performed to confirm that the basic modes required for the analysis of aircraft dynamic characteristics are well extracted. Finally, it was confirmed that the developed stick model assembly could be used for analysis of aircraft dynamic characteristics by comparing the errors in modes between the fine model assembly and the stick model assembly.

  • This paper proposes the hybrid fuzzy control system for fast response time and precision control of auto-equipment which exist disturbance, parameter alteration of system, uncertainty. The purposed system, which provides the improvement in terms of the control region in high speed and precision control, first used the fuzzy control method for fast response time and when the error reaches the preset value, used the frequency-locked method for precision control. The theoretical and experimental studies have been carried out. The presented results from the above investigation show considerably improved performance in the position control of auto-equipment.

  • Flexible parts can be deformed by the contact forces during assembly on the con to rigid parts and thus their successful assembly requires informations about their deformation as well as a misalignment between mating parts. However, because of the nonlinear and complex relationship between parts deformation and assembly reaction forces, it is difficult to acquire all required informations from only the reaction forces during assembly. In this paper, we propose a sensing system consisting of a camera and multiple mirrors for flexible parts assembly. Simulation results show that the system can be effectively used for detecting parts deformation and a misalignment between mating parts.

  • For successful deformable part assembly, information about its deformation as well as possible misalignment between the hole and its respective mating part are essential. Such information can be mainly acquired from visual sensors. In this paper, part deformation and misalignment in deformable cylindrical peg-in-hole tasks are measured by using a visual sensing system. First, a series of experiments to measure the position of an arbitrary point are performed. Next, an algorithm to measure misalignment and part shape as part deformation are presented, and a series of experiments on them are performed. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithms and the system are effective in measuring part deformation and misalignment.

  • For successful assembly of flexible parts, informations about their deformation as well as possible misalignments between the holes and their mating parts are essential. Such informations can be acquired from visual sensors. For robotic assembly, the corrective assembly motion to compensate for such misalignments has to be determined from the measured informations. However, this may not be simply derived from the measured misalignment alone because the part deformation progressively occurs during misalignment compensation. Based on the analysis of flexible parts assembly process, this paper presents a neural net-based inference system that can infer the complex relationship between the corrective motion and the measured information of parts deformation and misalignments. And it verifies the performance of the implemented inference system. The results show that the proposed neural net-based misalignment compensation algorithm Is effective in compensating for the lateral misalignment, and that it can be extended to the assembly tasks under more general conditions.

  • Three categories such as the design of a machine, control and software are necessary in the development of the photomask inspection machine with high resolution. Among them, the design of a software detects inferiority through the comparison of CAD data and real data read by camera from photomask. The block matching algorithm is used since the domain is large and the comparison of data by pixel is accomplished. To correct the error arising from the assembly of a machine, calibration algorithm is used and prefocusing algorithm is suggested to correct the surface of the photomask.
