Seasonal Variations of Water Quality and Periphyton in the Cheonggyecheon (청계천의 수질과 부착조류의 계절적 변동)

  • The seasonal variations of water quality and periphyton were investigated in an artificial stream (the Cheonggyecheon Stream) flowing through the Seoul City. TP showed a longitudinal gradient: 10 to $59{\mu}gP\;L^{-1}$ in the upper stream sites, and 15 to $90{\mu}gP\;L^{-1}$ in downstream sites. POP was a major form of TP in the water, occupying over 60%, while the proportion of DIP was less than 10% except for St. 4. N/P atomic ratio ranged from 78 to 554, which implies phosphorus would limit algal growth more than nitrogen. The biomass of periphyton did not show much difference among sites, and it was relatively higher in spring and fall season $(10\sim20{\mu}gChl\;{\alpha}cm^{-2})$ and lower in August $(<5{\mu}gChl\;{\alpha}cm^{-2})$, possibly because biofilms were washed off during spates of summer monsoon. Cyanobacteria was the dominant taxon in the periphyton community throughout the year. The periphyton standing crop can be classified as a nuisance level. It seems that phosphorus level is sufficiently high even though the input water is treated chemically, and modest water velocity $(20\sim90cm\;sec^{-1})$ and rocky bottom provide optimal conditions for periphyton growth.

  • 영산강 하구둑에 의해 폐쇄내만의 조건을 가진 영산강 하구역에서 식물플랑크톤의 계절변동을 파악하고자 2008년에 계절별로 7개 정점에서 조사하였다. 영산강 하구역에서 출현한 식물플랑크톤 개체수는 14$\sim$34,958cells/mL의 범위를 보였다. 조사시기별로는 7월에 평균 10,796cells/mL가 출현하여 조사기간 중 가장 많은 출현 개체수를 보였고, 이어서 9월(평균 3,327cells/mL), 5월(평균 590cells/mL), 11월(평균 34cells/mL) 순으로 감소하여 조사시기별 출현개체수의 변동이 매우 심하였다. 규조류는 모든 조사시기에 걸쳐 최고의 점유율을 나타내었고 11월을 제외하면 전체 개체수의 90%이상을 차지하고 있어 규조류가 영산강 하구역의 식물플랑크톤 생물량을 좌우하고 있는 종임을 알 수 있었다. 영산강 하구역에서 출현한 식물플랑크톤의 제 1 우점종은 5월에 Eucampia zodiacus(83.1%), 7월에 Chaetoceros curvisetus(24.2%), 9월에 Pseudo-nitzschia delicatissima(94.3%), 11월에는 Chroomnnas류(33.6%)로 변화하였다. 5월과 9월은 한 종이 전체 식물플랑크톤 개체수의 80% 이상을 차지하는 극우점양상을 보여주었고, 7월에는 C. curvisetus, Skeleton듬 costatum 및 Chaetoceros sp. 등이 유사한 점유율로 우점하고 있었다. 영산강 하구역의 식물플랑크톤 종다양성지수는 0.228$\sim$2.260의 범위로 소수의 우점종에 의해 전체 군집의 분포양상이 결정되는 전형적인 연안, 하구수역의 군집 특성을 보이고 있었다.

Effects of Biological Control Agent Algicidal Bacterium on the Phytoplankton Community and Microcystin-LR Contents in a Mesocosm Experiment (살조세균 적용이 식물플랑크톤 군집과 조류독소 분포에 미치는 영향)

  • Biological control agents (BCA; algicidal bacterium Xantobacter autotrophycus) plus casitone media, strongly changed physicochemical variables, standing crops of phytoplankton and microcystin-LR phytoplankton in 100-L mesocosm constructed in a small hexagonal pond (3.5 m ${\times}$ 5 m). No M. aeruginosa showed by 8 days, and 60% of total standing crops of phytoplanktons were decreased by the BCA treatment. BCA treatment also induced a strong decline of cellular extracted microcystin-LR (MCLR) and a remarkable increase of dissolved MCLR with the decrement in standing crops of cyanobacteria. In addition, BCA strongly increased all nutrients, but new outbreak of phytoplanktons hardly showed in the experimental mesocosm. The field application of BCA to controling the cyanobacterial bloom in large lakes and reservoirs is not relevant due to high concentration of nutrients and toxins. Thus, a further study is needed to diminish the adverse effects after BCA treatment for water quality preservation.

Phytoplankton variability in digestive tract of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum in Gomso Bay, west coast of Korea (서해 곰소만에서 바지락 소화관 내용물의 변동 특성)

  • Feeding behaviour of the manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum was qualitatively and quantitatively characterized by comparing the contents composition in digestive tract of the clam and the phytoplankton community in surface sea water in Gomso Bay, west coast of Korea. The contents of digestive tract comprised diatoms (71.5%), dinoflagellates (13.1%), nannoplankton (6.6%), and detritus including mesozooplankton. The abundance of food organisms in digestive tract of the clam was high in winter and spring, while low in summer and autumn. But The biomass of phytoplankton in surface sea water revealed the highest value in autumn. Also, the larger the clam size increases the abundance of food organisms in digestive tract. The dominant species in digestive tract were Paralia sulcata and Navicula arenaria such as benthic diatoms and dinoflagellate cysts, whereas the dominant species in surface sea water were Chaetoceros, Skeletonema, Asterionellopsis such as pelagic diatoms in genus, cryptomonads, and P. sulcata. Analyses of digestive tract revealed that benthic diatoms especially represent an important constituent of food organisms in the malina clam and different of phytoplankton size and morphology explain preference for food selectivity.

Ecological Study of Periphytons Along the Buk-han River Due To the Influence of Land Use Patterns (유역토지이용에 따른 북한강 상류 수계 부착조류에 대한 연구)

  • This study addresses the periphytons along the Bukhan river stream and examines the biological indices that represents the river and estimate water quality assessment. Bukhan river in 4 major watershed streams (Bukchon-Hangeychon, Narinchon, Inbukchon, and Soyang river) was selected in 9 points. Land use pattern along the streams showed marked differenced in agriculture areas and forest areas. Lower Soyang streams showed blue-green algae and green algae also appeared in evenly pattern. Thus, the pollution source, biomass and distribution are somewhat correlated, and BOD, SS, biodiversity, and evenness showed a similar pattern. This situation can lead to conclusion of oligotrophic lake with good condition. Therefore, current biological index and is not so desirable for stream degree standard water quality and nutrient level.

  • Although physiological and ecological characteristics of cyanobacteria have been studied extensively for decades, unknown areas still remain greater than the already known. Recently, the development of omics techniques based on molecular biology has made it possible to view the ecosystem from a new and holistic perspective. The molecular mechanism of toxin production is being widely investigated, by comparative genomics and the transcriptomic studies. Biological interaction between bacteria and cyanobacteria is also explored: how their interactions and genetic biodiversity change depending on seasons and environmental factors, and how these interactions finally affect each component of ecosystem. Bioinformatics techniques have combined with ecoinformatics and omics data, enabling us to understand the underlying complex mechanisms of ecosystems. Particularly omics started to provide a whole picture of biological responses, occurring from all layers of hierarchical processes from DNA to metabolites. The expectation is growing further that algal blooms could be controlled more effectively in the near future. And an important insight for the successful bloom control would come from a novel blueprint drawn by omics studies.

Temporal and Spatial Variations of Phytoplankton Communities in the Pelagic Environment of Kori, Korea (고리해역 표영환경내 식물플랑크톤 군집의 시공간적 변화)

  • Phytoplankton communities were investigated 13 times during the period from November, 1995 to December, 1996 in the coastal area of Kori. A total of 162 taxa (including unidentified species) were observed; 120 diatoms, 3 silicoflagellates, 34 dinoflagellates, 2 euglenoids, 1 chlorophyte and 2 unidentified microflagellates. A diatom species, Skeletonema costatum (Greville) Clove dominated all the year round. The standing stocks of phytoplankton ranged from 94 cells/ml in August to 1059 cells/ml in July. The peaks of standing stocks occurred in February and July. The effects of thermal effluent to the phytoplankton communities changed seasonally and might affect increasing the standing stocks where about 1 ∼ 3 km from the discharge of Kori Nuclear Power Plant in autumn and winter. But the effects of thermal effluent must be negative in summer.

On the Marine Environment and Distribution of Phytoplankton Community in the Northern East China Sea in Early Summer 2004 (이른 여름 동중국해 북부해역의 해양환경과 식물플랑크톤 군집의 분포특성)

  • We carried oui a study on the marine environment and distribution of phytoplankton community, such as chlorophyll a, species composition, dominant species and standing crops in the Northern East China Sea during early summer of 2004. According to the analysis of a T-S diagram, three characteristics of water masses were identified. We classified them into the coastal water mass, the cold water mass and the oceanic water mass. The first was characterized by the low temperature and the low salinity originated from China territory, the secondary was characterized by the low temperature, the low salinity and the high density originated from bottom cold water of Yellow Sea, and the third was done by the high temperature and salinity originated from Tsushima warm current. The internal discontinuous layer among them was farmed at the intermediate depth (about $5{\sim}30m$ layer). And the thermal front by upwelling region between the cold water mass and Tsushima warm current appeared in the central parts of the South Sea of Korea. The Phytoplankton community in the surface and stratified layers was a total of 44 species belonging to 26 genera. Dominant species were Prorocentrum triestinum, Scrippsiella trochoidea, Skeletonema costatum & Leptocylindrus mediterraneus. Standing crops of phytoplankton in the surface layer fluctuated between $0.3{\times}10^3$ cells/L and $10.8{\times}10^3$ cells/L. Diatoms appeared mainly in the Tsushima warm current regions, and flagellates occurred in the frontal zone and the low salinity regions where was the transfer areas of Chinese continental coastal waters. Chlorophyll a concentration by controlled phytoflagellate ratio in the South Sea of Korea was high values in the frontal zone and sub-surface layer. It was high concentration in the upwelling and coastal waters regions, but low concentration in the Tsushima warm current regions. The Chl-a maximum layers appeared in the thermochline depth or sub-surface layer lower than thermocline. The phytoplankton production in the South Sea of Korea was controlled by the expanded coastal waters of Chinese Continent which include a high concentrations of nutrients.

Seasonal changes in phytoplankton community related with environmental factors in the Busan coastal region in 2014 (2014년 부산 연안 해역에서 계절적 환경특성에 따른 식물플랑크톤 군집의 변화양상)

  • To assess the influence of environmental factors on the phytoplankton community structure and total phytoplankton biomass during four seasons in 2014, we investigated the abiotic and biotic factors at 25 stations in the Busan coastal region. The phytoplankton community and total phytoplankton biomass were strongly dependent on the discharge from the Nakdong River, and the high density of phytoplankton was related with the introduction of the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC), particularly in the thermohaline fronts of the fall season. The relationship between the salinity and nutrient (Dissolved inorganic nitrogen=DIN: R2=0.72, p<0.001 and Dissolved inorganic silicon=DSi: R2=0.78, p<0.001) highly correlated with the river discharge, implying that those nutrients have played a crucial role in the growth of diatom and cryptophyta. The total phytoplankton biomass was highest in the summer followed by autumn, spring, and winter. Diatom and cryptophyta species were dominant species during the four seasons. Additionally, there were strong positive correlations between Chlorophyll a and total phytoplankton biomass (R2=0.84, p<0.001), cryptophyta (R2=0.76, p<0.001) and diatom (R2=0.50, p<0.001), respectively. In particular, we found that there were significant differences in the nutrients, phytoplankton community compositions, and total phytoplankton biomass between the inner and the outer coastal region of Busan, depending on the amount of river discharge from the Nakdong River, particularly during rainy seasons. Therefore, the seasonal change of TWC and river discharge from the Nakdong River serve an important role in determining phytoplankton population dynamics in the Busan coastal region.

A Ecological Study of Phytoplankton Community in the Geum River Estuary (금강 하구 기수역 식물플랑크톤 군집의 생태학적 연구)

  • After the construction of the Geum River estuary dam, we investigated the ecological property of phytoplankton community with physicochemical property in 9 stations of Geum River estuary 4 times seasonally in 2010 about the environmental changes through the change of phytoplankton. Physicochemical property seems to show eutrophication which developed from the tendency of accruing of the nutrients (those involved in intermittency of freshwater which flows from the dike and the surrounding cities), caused by the changing of tidal flow, the decreasing of the inflow of seawater after the construction of the Geum River estuary dam (dike). A total of 233 species of species composition of phytoplankton emerged, showing a highly increased result compared to that of the former research. The reason for the increase in number is considered as a phenomenon resulting from the mix of blackish and freshwater marine species in the flow of intermittency of freshwater discharge. Also, the standing crops of phytoplankton considerably increased compared to when the dike had not yet been built. Highly affected by the discharge of occasional freshwater, the diatoms of blackish water zone dominated in spring and winter, while freshwater species appeared to dominate in summer and autumn. The species diversity showed over 2.0 except in winter season. After a cluster analysis, the result showed that the Geum River estuary was influenced by runoff from cities like Gunsan, the sewage which flows from Gyeongpo River, and the intermittency of freshwater discharge from the Geum River estuary dam.
