  • These researches have been conducted to obtain the basic information of the effects of paraquat on plant species and to screen the plant species showing specific responses to paraquat. Paraquat resistance related to ecotype and overwintering capacity. Perennial and biennial species showed higher resistance than annual species. In a family, most species showed higher resistance were overwintering species. Lamiaceae, Brassicaceae, and Caryophyllaceae were tolerant to paraquat, whereas Poaceae and Asteraceae were sensitive. Especially Mosla dianthera of Lamiaceae, Hemistepta lyrata and Aster pilosus of Asteraceae, and Paspalum thunbergii of Poaceae showed higher tolerance than others. The response patterns of plant species on germination stage were different to those on vegetative stage. Germination of Amarathus lividus, Arabis glabra, and Bidens frondosa was not inhibited by paraquat. But their seedling growth were highly inhibited.

  • This is the first report of Apogon erythrinus (Perciformes: Apogonidae) from Korea. A single specimen (33.6 mm SL) was collected by a fish pot from the coastal waters of Jeju-do Island on 28 October 2009. This species is characterized by having 5~6 predorsal scales, 7~9 developed gill rackers, end of second dorsal fin spine not reaching the middle of second dorsal fin base when depressed, and posterior margin of body scales reddish-brown. To confirm the correctness of species identification, the DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequence was obtained from the sample and compared with those of cardinalfish species recorded in the NCBI database. As a result, it was well-matched to A. erythrinus. We newly added this species to the Korean fish fauna and proposed a new Korean name, "Kueun-nun-eol-ge-bi-neul" because the eyes are large compared to its body.

  • Antimicrobial and antioxidative activities of heartwood extractives of domestic species were investigated to develop a natural fungicide or preservative. Four lignan derivatives and one taxane were isolated from heartwood of Taxus cuspidata which has been selected due to its high antioxidative activity among the tested species. The chemical structures were identified as : taxusin, isolariciresinol (4, 4', 9, 9'-tetrahydroxy-3', 5-dimethoxy-2, 7'-cyclolignan), lariciresinol (4, 4', 9-trihydroxy-3, 3'-dimethoxy-7, 9'-epoxylignan), taxiresinol (3, 4, 4', 9-tetrahydroxy-3'-methoxy-7, 9'-epoxylignan) and isotaxiresinol (3', 4, 4', 9, 9'-pentahydroxy- 5-methoxy-2, 7'-cyclolignan) on the basis of spectroscopic data and their chemical correlations. According to the results of free radical scavenging activity, isolariciresinol, lariciresinol and isotaxiresinol showed higher radical scavenging activity than those of 𝛼-tocopherol and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), the strongest natural and synthetic antioxidants. However, taxusin did not show any free radical scavenging activity. In this regard, it could inferred that high antioxidative activity of extractives of T. cuspidata was derived from isolariciresinol, lariciresinol and isotaxiresinol.

  • In order to elucidate the degradation of the herbicide bentazon (3-isopropyl-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4-one-2,2-dioxide) by soil microorganisms, it was incubated at $23{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ under the submerged and upland soil conditions of the different soils in the Chung Buk area. When bentazon (200 ppm) was incubated in Cheong Won A soil (silty loam; pH, 5.2; organic matter 1.4%) under the submerged condition for 6 months, 6-hydroxy bentazon (1.27%) was formed as the major degradation product and 8-hydroxy bentazon (0.57%) and anthranilic acid (0.13%) were formed as the minor ones. Meanwhile, when 500 ppm of bentazon was incubated in the same soil for 2 months, a trace amount of 6-hydroxy bentazon was formed. Eight strains of microorganisms isolated from the soils did not give any distinct degradation products in the pure culture experiment. The greater dehydrogenase activity in Cheong Won A soil than in Cheong Ju A soil might be related to the greater bentazon-degradability of the former soil than that of the latter. When bentazon (10 ppm) was incubated for 14 days with 14 strains of bacteria and 8 strains of fungi, the identities of which were all known, Rhizopus stolonifer produced 4.6${\sim}$31.6% of anthranilic acid as the major product from batch to batch, with trace amounts of 6-hydroxy bentazon and 8-hydroxy bentazon as minor products. The rest microorganisms did not produce any noticeable products.

  • Twenty kinds of medicinal herbs were extracted by water and 95% ethanol and then antimicrobial activity of the extracts was investigated against various kinds of microorganisms. Water extracts of Gardeniae fructus (Gardenia jasminoides), Lycii fructus (Lycium chinense) and Schizandrae fructus (Schizandra chinensis) showed inhibitory effects on the growth of most of the bacteria. In the case of ethanol extracts, the 3 kinds of the samples such as Gardeniae fructus, Schizandrae fructus and Lithospermi radix (Lithospermum erythrorhizon) showed inhibitory effects on the growth of almost all bacteria. In particular, ethanol extract from Phellodendri cortex (Phellodendron amurense) showed the best inhibitory effect on the growth of S. aureus in the concentration of 0.01%. By the way, inhibitory effects of water extracts from these medicinal herbs were not so good on the growth of fungi but those of ethanol extracts were better and ethanol extracts of Phellodendri cortex showed best. Antimicrobial activity was variable according to the used extracting solvent. For example, inhibitory effets of ethanol ext-racts were $2{\sim}100$ times better than those of water extracts. Ethanol extract of Lithospermi radix was the most effective not only bactericidal effects but also sensory evaluation tests for tastes.

  • Paspalum distichum and P. distichum var. indutum are perennial weeds of the family Poaceae that prefer moist environments such as waterfronts and waterways. The origin of both species is North America. P. distichum is distributed all over the world. However, P. distichum var. indutum occurs only in the United States, Japan, and Korea. For this reason, in many countries, P. distichum and P. distichum var. indutum are classified as the same species. In other words, P. distichum var. indutum is a different ecological type of P. distichum. Both species can reproduce and spread mainly by rhizome fragments rather than seeds. This rhizome has a characteristic that it does not germinate if it is buried in the ground with depth of more than 3 cm. As a management method for P. distichum and P. distichum var. indutum in agricultural lands (paddy fields), it is effective to combine cultural control and chemical control methods. In other words, combining deep plowing and harrowing can suppress the budding of water sparrow that has invaded paddy fields or fallow paddy fields. After that, these two species that germinate can be controlled by spraying soil treatment herbicides such as butachlor and thiobencarb or foliar treatment herbicides such as cyhalofop-butyl and fenoxaprop-p-ethyl.

  • This experiment was performed to investigate the flowering habit of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.). Sesame varieties tested could be classified into 8 different plant types by their morphological traits such as capsule shape, capsule setting habit and branching types among sesame gene pool of Crop Experiment Station, ORD. The first flower was appeared at the lowest node on main stem. Flowers were appeared progressively toward the tip of the main stem and also toward the tips of branches. The interval of flowering for a node was about one day, but 3 to 8 days for the flowers on the tips. Side flowers started at 4 to 5 nodes lower than those of center flower at the same day. Flowers were beared 2 by 1 node on the middle part of flower setting node (7-9) in mono capsule setting habit in spite of its normal is 1 by 1 node on the other nodes. Flowers were beared opposite direction on each node of stem and flowering toward the tip of main stem composed of cross shape between nodes and spiral, reverse of clockwise direction. We called this habit as cross spiral flowering order and cross spiral phyllotaxis. The first flower on branches was appeared when center flower on the 5th node of main stem began to flower. The branches produced at higher nodes on main stem showed larger flowering periods and more number of flowers than that at lower parts. BTB (Branch, Tricapsule, Bicarpels, 4 Loculi) type showed three capsule setting habits and same flowering period both on main stem and branches while BTQ (Branch, Tricapsule, Quadricarpels, 8 Loculi) type showed three capsule setting habit on main stem and mono-capsule setting habit on branches. In BTQ type, the period of flowering was much shorter on branches than on main stem. Branching type was considered more promising than non branching type for the breeding of early maturing high yielding variety because branching type has the advantage of bearing a lot of flowers in comparatively short flowering period.

  • This crossover study was performed in order to compare the effects of cetirizine, loratadine, and terfenadine in canine skin. Five healthy dogs were used. Cetirizine 0.5 mg/kg, loratadine 5 mg/kg and terfenadine 5 mg/kg were administered orally 4 hours before the experiment. Erythema indices and wheal size were assessed by Hexameter ($MX^{\circledR}$ 18, CK, Germany) and skin reaction guide, respectively. Cetirizine-induced erythema inhibition was generally higher than other drugs and was significantly different from placebo. Cetirizine was superior to placebo at 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 minutes (p< 0.01). Cetirizine also was superior to placebo at 9 minutes (p< 0.05). Loratadine and terfenadine erythema inhibition were better than after placebo treatment from 4 to 9 minutes, but erythema index of terfenadine at 7 minutes was not observed probability of 95% and 99%. At 10 minutes, intradermal injection of the histamine caused a mean wheal dimension for placebo, cetirizine, loratadine and terfenadine, which were 13.25$\pm$0.75 mm,7.5$\pm$ 1.02 mm (53% reduction, p<0.007),6.2$\pm$0.58 mm(43% reduction, p <0.01), and 8.4 $\pm$0.67 mm(37% reduction, p< 0.05), respectively, comparing with placebo. Loratadine and cetirizine were good antihistamines for clinical therapy for atopic dermatitis in dog.

  • The safety of fake anti-impotence drugs (fake Viagra : 26 samples, fake Cialis : 25 samples) distributed in Gyeonggi province was studied by monitoring the concentrations of anti-impotence pharmaceutical ingredient and their analogues. The concentrations of anti-impotence pharmaceutical ingredient 4 specis and their analogues 17 specis were estimated using by HPLC/PDA, LC-MS/MS. The range of concentration of sildenafil in fake viagra was 40~199 mg/tablet, among them the portion of the concentrations of sildenafil over 150 mg/tablet exceeded 65%. 3 cases in tested samples contained sildenafil and tadalafil. The range of concentration of sildenafil in fake cialis was 102~249 mg/tablet, among them the portion of the concentrations of sildenafil over 150 mg/tablet exceeded 88%. One case in tested samples contained demethylhongdenafil (90 mg/tablet). These results indicate that there were many fake anti-impotence drug contained high level of anti-impotence pharmaceutical ingredients, a sustainable monitoring and the blocked distribution of fake anti-impotence drugs recommended.

  • The quality of the products was investigated by analyzing fluorine content, pH, preservatives and tar colors in 31 dentifrice products (6 items for children) and 15 mouthwash products (2 items for children) marketed. It was intended to provide correct information to consumers by checking whether the standards and product indications match. As a result of measuring the fluoride concentration, 26 dentifrice and 15 mouthwash products contained from 48 to 1,472 ppm and from 85 to 225 ppm, respectively. Fluorine detection rates of dentifrice and mouthwash products were 83.9 and 83.3 %, respectively showing similar levels. Of the 41 fluoride-detected dentifrice and mouthwash products, 40 were 90.7~109.8 % of the displayed amount and suitable for the fluorine content standard of 90.0 to 110.0 %, but one dentifrice was found to be inappropriate at 36.3 % of the content indicated on the product. The pH of the dentifrice was 5.1~9.4, and the mouthwash was 4.2~6.2, which met all standards. As a result of simultaneous analysis of the concentration of six preservatives, benzoic acid was detected the most in 15 cases with a 30.6 % detection rate, sorbic acid was detected in 9 cases (detection rate of 18.4 %), and all four types of methyl p-hydroxybenzoate, ethyl p-hydroxybenzoate, propyl p-hydroxybenzoate, butyl p-hydroxybenzoate were not detected. As a result of analyzing the concentration of 10 types of tar colors, six types including red40, yellow4, yellow5, yellow203, green3, and blue1 were detected in a total of 9 cases (2 dentifrices and 7 mouthwashes) with blue1 being the most frequently detected. Detected fluorine concentration, added preservatives and tar colors were consistent with the product markings and it was well written on product packaging. The detected preservatives and tar colors were at a safe level due to low risk compared to Acceptable Daily Intake.
