  • In this paper, two-stage braking method of 3-phase induction motrois proposed. This brake involves tow stages. The first stage is capacitor self-excitation braking, and the second stage is three-phase magnetic braking. In several applicatons, a low cost and effective brake is required for three-phase induction motor. A mechanical friction brake, typical braking method for induction motor requires external energy sources which is not safe, expensive and requires maintenance. Static and dynamic analyses of the proposed brake scheme are along with analytical result, simulated waveforms and experimental waveforms are compared. The experimental results shows good agreement with the simulated results.

  • This study aimed to improve the performance of the KTX (Korea Train Express) brake system. To develop a braking disc-hub for the high-speed rail, the model performance was analyzed by finite element analysis, and the analysis results were verified using the braking test results. In addition, heat transfer analysis, thermal stress analysis, natural frequency analysis, and static analysis were conducted to examine the mechanical performance of the braking system. By deriving the design factors and conducting parametric analyses according to the shape of the hub, this study derived the optimal specifications that could improve heat dissipation and reduce weight. The cooling efficiency and structural performance of the optimization model were improved during braking compared to the existing model. It is expected that the design verification will be carried out through analyses of the optimal specifications so that it can be used in the development of brakes in railway vehicles and motor vehicles.

  • This paper investigates the accuracy of the vehicle pre-braking speed estimated based upon measured skidding distance. Driver ordinarily takes sudden braking when urgent situation is developed in the front or when the driver is involved in an unexpected situation, and the driver may be inflicted upon an accident depending on the required stopping distance. Among factors influencing the stopping distance of vehicle such as recognition response time of driver, performance of vehicle's braking device, and state of road surface etc, pre-braking speed is seemingly the most important influencing factor. Currently, in the investigating section of traffic accidents, the state of overspeed is determined by the pre-skidding speed calculated based on the length of skid mark. In order to identify the accurate cause of the accident, it is strongly recommended that estimation of pre-braking speed should be estimated taking into account speed reduction during transient time. In this study, we propose a method for estimating more accurate exact speed information of vehicle at the time of traffic accident. The outcomes from this study potentially help better understanding of the characteristics of vehicle for traffic safety in the future.

  • A helicopter rotor brake system stops or reduces the speed of the rotor by transforming the kinetic energy into the heat energy. The frictionally generated heat has a considerable effect on the frictional property of material itself and causes the change of the friction coefficient which may affect the breaking time significantly. In this paper, to take into account the effect of change of friction coefficient according to temperature on braking time, thermo-mechanically coupled analysis is carried out by commercial software ABAQUS. Further, simple theoretical equation is derived considering thermo-mechanical behaviors. The predicted braking times both from theoretical and numerical methods are compared and validity of proposed theoretical equation is investigated.

  • Results of the experimental research are described in this thesis, which are about braking characteristics of aircraft ABS brake system with different ground conditions. Dynamo-tests were conducted with the state of the application aircraft condition and with two different ground conditions. The Braking characteristics on each ground condition were drawn from the results of occurrence of skid, braking distance and deceleration. The braking performance of the application aircraft could be anticipated and the efficient range of braking operation could be set with those results.
