In the present paper, a current technical progress for recycling of used steel can is described. The developed technology was a kind of pre-treatment through an automatic equipment system to increase recycling and melting efficiency of used steel co. The process consisted of several unit processes such as breaking of steel can bale, removing dust, separation of aluminum can, delacquering, and compressing to bale. Also, aluminum powders were recovered as a by-product at the delacquering step. The process was carried out automatically through by use of the developed equipment system. The automatic system could be very available in mass treatment of used steel can.
Silicon is the most abundant metal element in the Earth's crust. Metallurgical-grade silicon (MG-Si) is an important metal that has wide industrial applications, such as a deoxidizer in the steelmaking industry, alloying elements in the aluminum industry, the preparation of organosilanes, and the production of electronic-grade silicon, which is used in the electronics industry as well as solar cells. MG-Si is produced industrially by the reduction smelting of silicon dioxide with carbon in the form of coal, coke, or wood chips in electric arc furnaces. MG-Si is purified by chemical treatments, such as the Siemens process. Most single-crystal silicon is produced using the Czochralski method. These smelting and refining methods will be helpful for the development of new recycling processes using secondary silicon resources.

Laboratory-scale experiments were performed to identify the As removal mechanism of the residual slag generated after the mineral carbonation process. The residual slags were manufactured from the steelmaking slag (blast oxygen furnace slag: BOF) through direct and indirect carbonation process. RDBOF (residual BOF after the direct carbonation) and RIBOF (residual BOF after the indirect carbonation) showed different physicochemical-structural characteristics compared with raw BOF such as chemical-mineralogical properties, the pH level of leachate and forming micropores on the surface of the slag. In batch experiment, 0.1 g of residual slag was added to 10 mL of As-solution (initial concentration: 203.6 mg/L) titrated at various pH levels. The RDBOF showed 99.3% of As removal efficiency at initial pH 1, while it sharply decreased with the increase of initial pH. As the initial pH of solution decreased, the dissolution of carbonate minerals covering the surface was accelerated, increasing the exposed area of Fe-oxide and promoting the adsorption of As-oxyanions on the RDBOF surface. Whereas, the As removal efficiency of RIBOF increased with the increase of initial pH levels, and it reached up to 70% at initial pH 10. Considering the PZC (point of zero charge) of the RIBOF (pH 4.5), it was hardly expected that the electrical adsorption of As-oxyanion on surface of the RIBOF at initial pH of 4-10. Nevertheless it was observed that As-oxyanion was linked to the Fe-oxide on the RIBOF surface by the cation bridge effect of divalent cations such as Ca2+, Mn2+, and Fe2+. The surface of RIBOF became stronger negatively charged, the cation bridge effect was more strictly enforced, and more As can be fixed on the RIBOF surface. However, the Ca-products start to precipitate on the surface at pH 10-11 or higher and they even prevent the surface adsorption of As-oxyanion by Fe-oxide. The TCLP test was performed to evaluate the stability of As fixed on the surface of the residual slag after the batch experiment. Results supported that RDBOF and RIBOF firmly fixed As over the wide pH levels, by considering their As desorption rate of less than 2%. From the results of this study, it was proved that both residual slags can be used as an eco-friendly and low-cost As remover with high As removal efficiency and high stability and they also overcome the pH increase in solution, which is the disadvantage of existing steelmaking slag as an As remover.
The residual heat and high CaO content present in the slag remaining in the ladle after the completion of continuous casting in the electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking process have been utilized to reduce power consumption and lime usage in the ladle furnace (LF) process. However, if the timing of such processes does not align with the LF and continuous casting operations, the recycling rate will decrease. To increase the slag recycling rate, the effect of ladle slag recycling methods, specifically pouring ladle slag into the slag pot in advance for subsequent recycling, on LF operations was analyzed. The slag liquefaction rate was calculated using the thermodynamic program Factsage 8.3 for ladle molten slag recycling methods. By applying each of the 10 heats operations for the ladle slag recycling methods, the desulfurization ability and LF operation performance were compared. It was found that when slag was immediately recycled into the ladle after continuous casting was completed, power consumption decreased by 0.3 MWh, LF operation time was shortened by 1.2 minutes, and the desulfurization rate increased by 5.8%.
The ironware production technology is a measure to fathom the society's level of development in time. To understand iron-manufacure methods in the past, various investigations on the fine structures and additions of ironware remains and Iron ingot have been conducted in a way of natural science. This study metallurgically reclassifies remains excavated in iron-manufacture remains located in Beokje, Goyang, which are thought to be in time of Goryeo Dynasty, and draws an inference from the element analysis on the iron-manufacture and smelting technology. Iron ingot samples with a cast iron structure are divided into those with a white cast iron structure and those with a grey cast iron rich in P. The P content of grey cast iron appeared to be the result of adding a flux agent like lime, iron ingot and carbon steel iron ingot with a cast iron structure excavated in the area is regarded as pig iron which was made without a refining process. In this study it seems that two methods of making ironware were used in the area; one is the method of making ironware by pouring cast iron to the casting, and the other is the method of making carbon steel through the refinement of pig iron. It appears that highly even steel structure of carbon steel and a small amount of MnS inclusion are very similar with that of the modern steel to which Mn is artificially added. Nevertheless, these data alone cannot be used to determine the source of Mn in the carbon steel of the excavated from the iron-manufacture remains, which raises the need for further studies on the source and the possibility of carbon steel via the iron-manufacture process of cast iron.
The Sudang-ri Site in Geumsan is considered the historic site where Baekje dominated the inland traffic route to Gaya through Geumsan and Jinan in the 5th Century. This study identified the production techniques of iron by conducting an analysis of metallographical microstructure of the artifacts such as an iron sword and an iron sickle that were excavated in Sudang-ri Site, Geumsan, one of the regions ruled by Baekje, and tried to figure out the characteristics and the technical systems of Baekje's ironmaking around the 5th Century by comparing them with other iron artifacts produced around the same time. The analysis showed that various production techniques were applied to the artifacts excavated in Sudang-ri Site, Geumsan. Depending on the production techniques, they can be divided largely into three methods: the simple shape-forging method, the steel manufacture method after forging, and the steel manufacture & heat-treatment method after forging. The iron sickle from the stone chamber tomb No. 1, which was produced only through forging, is mostly composed of soft ferrite at both edges of the blade and at the rear making the use of the weapon impractical. From this fact, it is presumed that they were produced as burial objects or ceremonial accessories for the person buried. The iron axe from the outer stone coffin tomb No. 1 and the iron swords and sickle from the outer stone coffin tomb No. 12, which were produced through the steel manufacture method after forging such as carburizing, did not go through the heat treatment such as quenching, but applied different production processes to each part. Therefore, it is deemed that they were produced as daily tools for cultivation rather than burial objects or ceremonial accessories. The production techniques following the forging process - carburizing and heat treatment - can be found on the iron swords from the outer stone coffin tomb No. 5 and the outer stone coffin tomb No. 12. The sturdy structure of the blade part and the durable structure of the rear processed with heat are deemed to have been produced as weaponry and used by the person buried. Based on the analysis of the iron artifacts excavated from Sudang-ri Site in Geumsan, the characteristics of iron production techniques were investigated by comparing them with the artifacts from Yongwon-ri Site in Cheonan, Bongseon-ri Site in Seocheon, and Bujang-ri Site in Seosan that were made around the same time as the cluster of Baekje tombs examined by the metallographical microstructure analysis of this study. For the iron artifacts analyzed here, the changes in the techniques were investigated using the iron swords common in all of the tombs. In the case of the iron swords, it was identified the heat treatment technique called tempering was applied from the 4th Century.

SiC fiber can be used up to $1800^{\circ}C$ in both inert and air atmosphere without any problems such as melting and oxidation. SiC fibers can be applied to dust filtering processes as a bag filter at a high temperature above $700^{\circ}C$, which is far beyond the temperature range of currently available industrial bag filter. However the studies for the degradation of SiC fibers were still lacked in the harsh environment of steel industries and thermoelectric power plants. In this study, SiC fibers were reacted with steel dust and thermal power plant dust at a high temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ or higher, and the degraded shape of the fiber surface was observed by SEM. Also the degree of oxygen diffusion on the surface and inside of SiC fiber was analyzed by EDS.
During steelmaking on EAF, 1 ~ 2% of dust is generated. EAF Dust contains 20 ~ 30% of Zn and Fe. Dust contained in Off-gas is passed through combustion tower and cooling tower, and then captured in bag filter. About 15 wt.% of dust is dropped at the bottom of Combustion tower by its specific gravity, which was also carried out to recycle company with more higher charge than Bag filter dust. This study is focused on the combustion tower dust, and seperation as a function of operation period and particle size. As a result, Zn and Fe content of dust is more affected by size factor than operation period.

This study aimed to monitor a pilot-scale vertical flow reactor (VFR) system being operated in long-term for water quality control of pH-neutral mine drainage containing Fe, Mn and As, discharged in D mine site. The treatment systems of VFR and zero manganese reactor (ZMR) consisted of sand/limestone, and steel slag/limestone, respectively. The systems were operated during about six months in order to evaluate their long-term treatment efficiency It was observed that both pH and alkalinity of mine drainage were remarkably increased and more than 98% of Fe, As and Mn ions was continuously removed during the tested period of time. In conclusion, the field results of this work demonstrated that the vertical flow reactor system can effectively treat mine drainage contaminated by Fe, As and Mn.

Metal emulsions have been studied for several decades as a method of increasing the efficiency of the steelmaking process. This study was performed using a water model, observable at room temperature, to compensate for the disadvantages of the high-temperature experiment, the results of which are difficult to observe visually. As a substitute for metal-in-slag emulsions, experiments were conducted by dropping distilled water into silicone oil and comparing the results with the results of a calculation by momentum balance equations. The descending velocity of the water droplet decreased as the diameter of the droplet and viscosity of the fluid (silicon oil) increased. To simulate the descending velocity of a water droplet in silicon oil under stirring conditions, the flow rate of the fluid (silicon oil) was measured by particle image velocimetry (PIV) methods. The calculation of the descending velocity of the water droplet was in good agreement with the measured values, with and without stirring a viscous silicone oil.
