Assessment & Justification of Data Warehousing from A Competitive Advantage Perspective (경쟁우위적 관점에서의 데이터 웨어하우징 평가 및 정당화)

  • 전통적인 비용수익 분석법 (CBA approach) 과 활동기준원가계산 방법 (ABC approach)과 같은 지금까지의 방법으로는 전략적 정보시스템이나 정보 하부구조를 효과적으로 평가하고 정당화하는데 한계가 있다고 지적되어왔다. 따라서, 본 논문은 정보시스템의 하부구조를 이루고 있는 데이터 웨어하우징을 스물여섯 개의 데이터 웨어하우징 성공사례 분석을 통해서 데이터 웨어하우징이 가치사슬 모델의 각 활동에 어떻게 활용되고 있는지를 분석하고, 경쟁우위적 관점에서 이들 사례들의 공통점을 찾아내어, 데이터 웨어하우징을 경쟁우위적 관점에서 보다 효과적으로 정당화할 수 있는 모델을 제시하고 있다. 이 모델은 기존의 정보시스템 정당화에 사용되어왔던 방법들의 단점을 보완하여, 기업들이 데이터 웨어하우징이나 경쟁우위를 확보하기 위해서 구축하는 다른 정보시스템들을 경쟁우위적 관점에서 정당화하고자 할 때 유용한 도구로써, 기존의 방법들과 병행해서 사용하면 보다 효과적으로 정보시스템들을 평가하고 정당화할 수 있으리라 생각된다.

  • 최근 정보보호의 중요성에 대한 인식이 확산되고 있음에도 불구하고 정보보호에 관한 적절한 투자가 이루어지지 않아, 효과적인 정보보호 시스템 구현이 지연되고 있다. 이는 전 세계적인 경제불황이라는 원인도 있겠지만, 정보보호 투자에 대한 정당화 논리가 부족하여 최고 경영자의 의사결정에 적절히 반영되지 않은 이유가 더 크다고 할 수 있다. 정보보호는 조직의 업무 수행에 수반되는 부대비용 개념으로 인식되어 왔으며 이 결과 ROI 와 같은 정보보호 투자에 대 한 정당화 논리를 제공하지 못해 적절한 투자가 적절히 수행되지 못하였다. 따라서 최근에는 정보보호 투자에 대한 수익과 지출간의 관계를 통한 ROSI(Return on Security Investment) 분석을 통한 정당화 논리 전개에 대한 필요성이 대두되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 ROSI 산출에 대한 접근방법을 비교 분석하고 TCO(Total Cost of Ownership)를 이용한 ROSI 방법을 제시하고자 한다. TCO는 하드웨어 가격뿐만 아니라 기술지원 및 유지 지원 인력 등을 모두 고려한 총 소유비용이다. 즉 정보보호에 대한 정확한 총 비용을 구하는데 매우 적합하다고 할 수 있다. 본 연구의 결과는 기업들로 하여금 좀 더 효과적인 정보보호 투자 정당화 수단으로서 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

  • From the viewpoint of Information Ethics. I tried to examine the moral justification of Intellectual Property Rights in the age of the digital information society. Lockian traditional argument of property rights which is based on the value of labor and Hegelian theory of personalization, both are not enough to justify the new Intellectual Property Rights. The notions of Intellectual Property Rights are to be changed. One change is from the absolute dominion over material property to the limited dominion over intellectual property. The change from property rights to process control rights is the other. To protect these intellectual property rights, there are three possible protection devices that we might take - legal protection, technical protection and moral protection. I argued that both legal and technical protection have some limitations, so the final way to protect the IP rights is to attempt to establish the moral protection as a fundamental solution.

Claiming Global Responsibility for Distant Suffering in Media Discourse -Bosnia and Kosovo- (미국 엘리트 언론이 주장하는 전지구적 책임의 정치적 성격 -보스니아 내전과 코소보 분쟁-)

  • This paper explores the formation of global responsibility discourses in the elite US media used in promoting NATO's military interventions in the post-Cold War era. The case study of global responsibility discourses surrounding the Bosnian War (1992-1995) and the Kosovo Conflict (1998-1999) offers an account of the roles of the elite US media in foreign policy. The construction and articulation of global responsibility discourses in the elite US media were closely related to the US government's policy and were formed within the framework of US national interest and domestic responsibility. The cases of military intervention in the post-Cold War period imply that there were more fundamental structure and patterns by which the elite US media approached the 'humanitarian crises': 'benevolent domination' and the subsequent construction of a 'melodramatic national identity' in the war narratives. Presuming that the elite US media's discourse is a primary site for the public for experiencing and understanding distant suffering, this paper concludes that global responsibility discourses within the media may have dangerous ramifications for global democracy because the discourse of responsibility can potentially absorb the creative, progressive energies created by the public's awareness of responsibility on a global scale in order to reinforce the relations of domination.

  • In May 2012, the police was empowered to electronically obtain location information of mobile devices from the telecommunication service provides for the purpose of rescue by the Act on the Protection, Use, ETC. of Location Information, after years of pressure with repeated serious violent crime outbreaks and controversy concerning the risk of breaching privacy. This study examines the environmental, legal, and technological challenges related to location tracking at the time of five years after the amendment of the law. The bottom line of police's locating power is to secure the lives of people in deadly emergent circumstance. Therefore, location tracking using given information should be swiftly proceeded after consideration and judgment of justification in timely manner to electronically request information to mobile carriers, and it is necessary to have somewhat flexibility of interpretation to be applied to diverse situation. In addition, location tracking technology should be continuously updated through cooperation with the stake-holders. Recognizing substantial problems in practice, we identified and explored the issues including obtaining prior consent for tracking the user's location in case of emergency, confirmation of emergency situation requiring police presence, qualification of legitimate requester, and limited applicability in various circumstances, which are required to reconsidered in conjunction with the personal information protection laws. Additional practical issues may include the expenses for information provision and other incentives to promote active cooperation by the telecom companies.

Tracing Per Ankh as a Prototype of Ancient Egytian Libraries (고대 이집트 도서관의 원형, 페르 앙크(Per Ankh) 추적)

  • In ancient Egypt, temples were not only religious sanctuaries but also community centers. One of the core spaces created in the temple is the facility where priests and scribes copied and preserved texts on papyrus and other media. Its common designation was 'pr-mḏȝ'(House of Books) and the 'per-(nw)-seshw'(House of Scrolls). The general term used during that time was 'Per Ankh', and the modern term for it is 'temple library'. Therefore, this study first identified the character and identity of the Per Ankh attached to the temple, and then traced whether it is appropriate to designate 'healing place of the souls' depicted on the hypostyle hall(Per Ankh) in the Ramesseum(mortuary temple) built by Ramses II of the New Kingdom as a library. As a result, Per Ankh, a hieroglyph combining the Per(house) and Ankh(life), was revealed to be a multi-purpose complex facility consisting of a learning and research center, a treatment and healing center with medical facilities and sanatoriums, a religious ceremony and a center for the celebration of eternal life, a scriptorium and a library. Therefore, the traditional argument that Per Ankh refers to a library cannot be justified. In the same context, the inscription 'Ψυχῆς ἰατρεῖον' on the doorplate of the hypostyle hall of the Ramesseum, which was first introduced by Greek historian Hecataeus of Miletus in the 4th century BC, was translated into Latin as 'Psychēs Iatreion' by Diodorus Siculus in the 1st century BC and described as the motto of the sacred library. However, Psyche is the goddess of Greek and Roman mythology, and Iatreion means hospital(clinic, healing center) and pharmacy, so Per Ankh in the Ramesseum is a space to heal the soul of the pharaoh (Ka). Therefore, 'Psychēs Iatreion = library' is a distortion and a mistranslation. It is not the motto of the library, but a metaphor for the Per Ankh.

A Comparison of Mathematically Gifted Students' Solution Strategies of Generalizing Geometric Patterns (초등학교 4,5,6학년 영재학급 학생의 패턴 일반화를 위한 해결 전략 비교)

  • The main purpose of this study was to explore the process of generalization generated by mathematically gifted students. Specifically, this study probed how fourth, fifth, and sixth graders might generalize geometric patterns and represent such generalization. The subjects of this study were a total of 30 students from gifted classes of one elementary school in Korea. The results of this study showed that on the question of the launch stage, students used a lot of recursive strategies that built mainly on a few specific numbers in the given pattern in order to decide the number of successive differences. On the question of the towards a working generalization stage, however, upper graders tend to use a contextual strategy of looking for a pattern or making an equation based on the given information. The more difficult task, more students used recursive strategies or concrete strategies such as drawing or skip-counting. On the question of the towards an explicit generalization stage, students tended to describe patterns linguistically. However, upper graders used more frequently algebraic representations (symbols or formulas) than lower graders did. This tendency was consistent with regard to the question of the towards a justification stage. This result implies that mathematically gifted students use similar strategies in the process of generalizing a geometric pattern but upper graders prefer to use algebraic representations to demonstrate their thinking process more concisely. As this study examines the strategies students use to generalize a geometric pattern, it can provoke discussion on what kinds of prompts may be useful to promote a generalization ability of gifted students and what sorts of teaching strategies are possible to move from linguistic representations to algebraic representations.

Analysis of Changes in the Learning Environments of Middle School Science Classes (중학교 과학 수업 학습 환경에 대한 변화 분석)

  • Using TIMSS survey data, we analyzed whether there were any significant changes in the learning environment of middle school science classes over the last 10 years. Our study selected questions from teachers and school principals' questionnaires and divided them by category: science class, teacher professional development, and school environment. The science class components were subdivided into three categories: science learning activities, evaluation, and homework. Within teacher professional development, the sub-categories included teacher training, collaboration to improve teaching, and teacher evaluation. School environment subdivided into two aspects, these being school characteristics and school system. Our research confirmed that there has been a positive change overall in learning environments. However, most classes are teacher-conducted and also teacher-oriented; the proportion of science investigation activities has declined compared against the prior ten years. Our study show that students do not engage in a range of inquiry-related activities. The questions on tests and examinations involve mostly knowledge application and understanding, although recent methods of evaluation show improvement. As for the science teachers, they participate in many professional development programs but focus on science content, science curriculum, and pedagogy. In addition, teachers do not have many opportunities to participate in the training to integrate information technology into science, science assessment, or improving students' critical thinking or inquiry skills. The teachers are satisfied with their profession, and the shortage of science resources does not seem to affect instruction.

The Professional Identity and Work of Culture and Education Program PD's of KBS-TV in the 1970's: Formation of Broadcasting Speciality, New Technologies, and 'Production Spirits' (1970년대 KBS 텔레비전 교양 피디의 직무와 직업 정체성: 방송 전문성 형성과 신기술, 그리고 '제작 정신')

  • This study explores the formational process of KBS PD's professional identity in the 1970's, focusing on everyday work and workplace for program production. In terms of salary and social-cultural status, a television PD was not a desirable occupation in the 70's. Since the beginning of radio broadcasting, production of culture and education programs had been sub-categorized under Programming Division. Also, it has been claimed in several researches that in the 70's, the production of education and cultural programs had visibly grown owing to the political necessity of policy PR and campaigns, and the introduction of new broadcasting equipment and technologies for producing the mentioned political campaign programs. However, this study argues that the main force that led to such developments was the cultural practices and the production spirits of the KBS PD's. These PD's trained themselves in production workplace from the bottom by assisting film directors and learning from cameramen about the film making and post-production process. Moreover, in the transitional phase from film to magnetic tape recorder, they established themselves as main subjectivities of production by developing Division of Culture and Education as a specialized and independent sector. The "program production spirit and DNA" that evolved from the experiences of working in poor production environment served as a force for developing professional and self identity. However, the culture and education PD's of the 70's were still tied down to the limited roles of simply providing technological and productional 'professionalism' within the hegemonic structure of the strong state. As with the members of any other social domain at the time, PD's had restricted roles to play and putting in effort and competing to create better programs was the only 'freedom' that was allowed. This study argues that under such condition, KBS PD's implemented two strategies to construct their own professional identities: one was to distinguish themselves from official broadcasters, and the other was to distinguish themselves from commercial broadcasters. Unfortunately, ethical practice as a professional became nothing more than an issue of personal morality and broadcasting's public responsibility was lost under the shadows of commercial broadcasting.
