  • This paper proposes a soft-switching interleaved boost converter which is suitable for high step-up and high power applications. Compared to the conventional boost converter the proposed converter can achieve approximately doubled voltage gain using the same duty cycle. The voltage ratings of the switch and diode are reduced to half, which result in the use of devices with lower $R_{DS(ON)}$ and on drop leading to reduced conduction losses. Also, voltage ratings of the passive components are reduced, and therefore the total energy volume is reduced to half. Further, the switch is turned on with ZVS in the CCM operation, and the diode is turned off with ZCS which results in negligible surge caused by diode reverse recovery leading to reduced switching losses. The validity of the proposed converter is proved through a 2kW prototype.

  • This study was conducted to develop and verify a torque application device for use in a mechanical power-circulation test rig for 5.5 MW wind turbine gearboxes. The design and analysis of the torque application device was conducted. In addition, the torsional stiffness of the test rig was calculated using the rotational angle measurements for each of the components. The calculated stiffness of the test rig was $231.13kN{\cdot}m/rad$ for a clockwise torque application. The rated torque can be applied when the stiffness of the gearbox is greater than $1,064,400kN{\cdot}m/rad$ for a clockwise torque application. Because of the limited rotational angle of the test rig, the potential application of the rated torque is determined according to the torsional stiffness of the test gearbox.

  • This paper describes the development of 6-axis force/moment sensor considered adult weight far an intelligent foot of humanoid robot. In order to walk on uneven terrain safely, the foot should perceive the applied forces Fx, Fy, Fz and moments Mx, My, Mz to itself and control the foot using the forces and moments. The applied forces and moments should be measured from a 6-axis force/moment sensor attached to the foot, which is composed of Fx sensor, Fy sensor, Fz sensor, Mx sensor, My sensor and Mz sensor in a body. Each sensor should get the deferent rated load, because the applied forces and moments to foot in walking are deferent. Therefore, one of the important things in the sensor is to design each sensor with the deferent rated load and the same rated output. In this paper, a 6-axis force/moment sensor (rated load of Fx and Fy are 500Nm and Fz sensor is 1000N, and those of Mx and My are 18Nm, Mz sensor is 8Nm) for perceiving forces and moments in a humanoid robot's foot was developed using many PPBs (parallel plate-beams). The structure of the sensor was newly modeled, and the sensing elements (plate-beams) of the sensor were designed using by ANSYS software (FEM (Finite Element Method) program). Then, a 6-axis force/moment sensor was fabricated by attaching strain-gages on the sensing elements, and the characteristic test of the developed sensor was carried out. The rated outputs from FEM analysis agree well with that from the characteristic test.

  • Combustion pressures were measured to study combustion stability for an oxygen rich preburner by both of static and dynamic pressure sensors. The resolutions of each static and dynamic pressure sensor are the 1,000 Hz and 25,600 Hz, respectively. The nominal combustion pressure of the preburner was 200 bar but 80 bar was used at the several initial tests for the safety reason. Two stage ignition was applied to reduce the ignition impact for every tests including the tests with 200 bar combustion pressure. The tests lasted for 10 sec. max. and a little fluctuations of pressure was observed during the main mode. The measured pressures were studied by FFT analysis and no noticeable frequency coupling was found. Thus the preburner can be regarded as stable and it can be utilized for further study on staged combustion cycle liquid rocket engine.

  • A method for applying emergency ratings to improve the reliability of power supply in ACSR overhead transmission lines is described in this paper. Due to re-regulate power industry, most power companies worldwide as well KEPCO have been searching for only economical strategies without new investment. Power demand was rapidly increasing, however, generation amount did not follow sufficiently. Hence in order to increase the transmission capacity for the existing transmission lines in case of peak load, or contingency in transmission lines, an application method of emergency ratings such as short or long term rating is proposed. If applying long term emergency rating instead of static line rating for the period of a peak load, power transmission can be increased to 10 % or more. Furthermore, it was shown that emergency rating can be effectively used in the contingency of double-circuit transmission lines and/or overload cases.

  • In the conventional boost converter, the actual duty cycle is limited as the output voltage increases due to increased voltage and current stress of the switch and diode and voltage surge caused by diode reverse recovery. In this paper a new non-isolated boost converter suitable for high gain applications is proposed. The proposed converter has voltage gain of around 6 when the duty cycle is 0.5. Since ZVS is achieved under CCM, the proposed converter has wide ZVS range. Also, voltage ratings of switch and diode are the same as one third of output voltage, and ratings of input and output passive components are reduced due to the interleaving. In addition voltage surge caused by diode reverse recovery is negligible due to ZCS turn-off of diodes. Operating principle of the proposed converter is described and validated through theoretical analysis, simulation and experiment.

  • Wide operating range and speed control is needed for wind power generating and a Doubly Fed Induction Generator(DFIG) has good adaptivity for that purpose. This paper deals with the speed, power, and power factor control using the Grid connected DFIG in the super-synchronous speed regions, by controlling frequency and voltage fed to the rotor. Power flow of the DFIG and steady-state algebraic equations of the equivalent circuit are analyzed. The wind turbine speed and constant stator power were controlled by the rotor exciting frequency. For a normal operating region, in which the generator ratings were not exceeded, rotor exciting frequency. For a normal operating region, in which the generator ratings were not exceeded, the rotor current was either less than or equal to the rated value. Accordingly, the optimal power factor can be selected relative to the permissible rated current at the rotor coil which controls the magnitude of the injected rotor voltage to the rotor according to a given rotor frequency. Consequently, it is possible to determine the optimal drive of a DFIG for wind power generation application.

  • Diesel engine being used on power tiller has over heating problem while running at the rated power range, The reason for overheating the engine is mainly owing to so small capacity of cooling system. This study was conducted to determine relatively optimum capacity of cooling system for the diesel engine. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. The capacity of cooling system for the diesel engine being used in the rural area was not sufficient to cool the engine at the rated power. 2. It is desirable that the cooling water flow rate was $12{\ell}/min$ if we used supplementary pump for increasing the cooling efficiency. 3. As cooling water was circuited $12{\ell}/min$, highest temperature of cooling water was $91^{\circ}C$. This value is within $88^{\circ}C{\pm}5^{\circ}C$ of SAE Standard criterion.

  • This paper describes a new method for the design of variable structure model-following control systems(VSMFC). This design concept is developed using the theory of variable structure systems (VSS) and slide mode. The new results are presented on the sliding control methodology to achieve accurate tracking for a class of nonlinear, multi-input multi-output(MIMO), time varying systems in the presence of parameter variations. The design requires little computational effort. The dynamic response is insensitive to parameter variations. The feasibility and the advantages of the method are illustrated by applying it to a 1000 MWe boiling water reactor(BWR). The control is studied in the range of 85%∼90% of rated power for load-following control. A set of 12 nonlinear differential equations is used to simulate the total plant. A 6-th order linear model has been developed from these equations at 85% of rated power. The obtained controller is shown by simulations to be able to compensate for a plant parameter variation over a wide power range.
