  • The analysis and experimental results for the bellows of gasgenerator liquid oxygen shut-off valve are presented. The analyses are performed using EJMA (Expansion Joint Manufacturing Association) standard and the commercial FE (finite element) analysis program, Abaqus v6.9, at room and cryogenic temperatures. The results include the spring rate, the stress and the fatigue life of the bellows. The effects of the contact and material plasticity on the FE analysis results are also analyzed.

  • Pitting wear is a dominant from of polyethylene surface damage in total knee replacements, and may originate from surface cracks that propagate under repeated tribological contact. In this study, stress intensity factors, K$\_$I/and $_{4}$, were calculated for a surface crack in a polyethylene-CoCr-bone system under the rolling and/or sliding contact pressures. Crack length and load location were considered in determination of probable crack propagation mechanisms and fracture modes. Positive K$\_$I/ values were obtained for shorter cracks in rolling contact and for all crack lengths when the sliding load was apart from the crack. $_{4}$ was the greatest when the load was directly adjacent to the crack (g/a=${\pm}$1). Sliding friction caused a substantial increase of both K$\_$I/$\^$max/ and $_{4}$$\^$max/. The effective Mode I stress intensity factors, K$\_$eff/, were the greatest at g/a=${\pm}$1, showing the significance of high shear stresses generated by loads adjacent to surface cracks. Such behavior of K$\_$eff/ suggests mechanisms for surface pitting by which surface cracks may propagate along their original plane under repeated rolling or sliding contact.

  • In this study, full-rounded tip curve of rack and its mating fillet curve of pinion in Involute-circular arc composite tooth profile are derived. Mechanical characteristics are calculated analytically, i.e., Specific sliding, Nominal bending stress at working root circle and the Contact factor of the arc of contact in circular arc part to the arc of double contact. These characteristics compared with standard involute tooth profile are improved in circular arc part of composite tooth profile. To obtain more efficient composite tooth profile, we studied these characteristics with regard to the changes of unwound angle and radius of circualr arc. And a design method of composite tooth profile is suggested. Composite tooth profile are compared with standard involute tooth profile.

  • A method analizing contact pressure between plate and elastic half space is presented by using F.E.M. With the method, the pressure intensities at surface nodes of half space cae be directly calculated by using flexibility matrix of half space. The method is originally presented by Y.K. Cheung et al.(3) Insted of Y.K. Cheung's method, which use a conception of equi-contact pressure area around each surface nodes of half space in the noded rectanqular element area. We use the equi-contact pressure area around the Gaussian integration points of half space surface in the noded isoparametric element area. Numarical examples are presented and compared with other's studies.

  • An explosion modeling technique was developed by using the spherical discrete element code, $PFC^{3D}$, which can be used to model the dynamic stress wave propagation phenomenon. The modeling technique is simply based on an idea that the explosion pressure should be applied to a $PFC^{3D}$ particle assembly not in the form of an external force (body force), but in the form of a contact force (surface force). The stress wave propagation modeling was conducted by simulating the experimental approach based on the Hopkinson's effect combined with the spatting phenomenon that had previously been developed to determine the dynamic tensile strength of Inada granite. As a result, the stress wave velocity obtained by the proposed modeling technique was 4167 m/s, which is merely $3\%$ lower than the actual wave velocity of 4300 m/s for an Inada granite.

  • Medical lift column controlling the vertical position while supporting heavy eccentric load should have the high fatigue strength as well as the extremely low structural deflection and vibration in order to maintain the positioning accuracy. The lift column driven by a induction motor is generally in a three-step sliding boom structure and exhibits the time-varying stress distribution according to the up-and-down motion. This study is concerned with the numerical prediction of the fatigue strength of the lift column subject to the time-varying stress caused by the up-and-down motion. The stress variation during a motion cycle is obtained by finite element analysis and the fatigue life is predicted making use of Palmgren-miner's rule and S-N curves. In order to secure the numerical analysis reliability, a 3-D FEM, model in which the detailed lift column structure and the fitting parts are fully considered, is generated and the interfaces between lift column and pads are treated by the contact condition.

  • The problem of interest is formulating elastic contact problem of a layered semi-infinite solid in terms of Fourier integral. The plane strain problem is considered for a solid composed of homogeneous isotropic two layers with different mechanical properties. General solutions for the subsurface stress and deformation field of frictionless elastic bodies under normal loading using of Fourier transformation technique are obtained. The numerical results for the stress distribution of coated solid for some particular cases are given.

  • The effect of tangential loading on the subsurface stress field has been investigated numerically. As tangential load increases, the subsurface stress field expands more widely to the direction of the tangential load. Places of the maximum shear stress and the maximum effective stress are getting closer to the surface with the increasing tangential load. The tangential load in an elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication condition is so low that it does not affect the subsurface stress field.

  • Brakes are one of the important safety parts in cars. The requirements of brakes in performance, in comfort, and working lifetime are high. This paper presents the static analysis on the stress and temperature of a automotive drum brake. The particular interest is the distribution of the contact pressure between brake lining and drum. The problems to be solved are the effects of friction coefficient, actuation force, temperature, and brake component's stiffness. The contact problem includes friction, and is solved using the ABAQUS.

  • Gerotor is widely used as a hydraulic pump or motor, by virtue of its volume changing ability. Performance deterioration of a gerotor hydraulic motor mainly due to the wear come from the contact between inner rotor with trochoidal curve and outer rotor with circular arc profile. This research covers the basic investigation about the contact forces of a gerotor hydraulic motor using analytic method. The influence of the eccentricity and the radius of circular arc teeth on the contact stress was evaluated.
