Quasi-static tests such as monotonic tension and loading/unloading tension were performed to investigate the bond characteristics and the failure processes for the T-joint specimens made from fiber/epoxy composite material. Two types of specimens, each consists of two components, e. g. skin and frame. were manufactured by co-curing and secondary bonding. During the monotonic tension test, AE instrument was used to predict AE signal at the initial and middle stage of the damage propagation. The damage initiation and progression were monitored optically using m (Charge Coupled Device) camera. And the internal crack front profile was examined using ultrasonic C-scan. The results indicate that the loads representing the abrupt increase of the AE signal are within the error range of 5 percent comparing to the loads shown in the load-time curve. Also it is shown that the initiation of crack occurred in the noodle region for both co-cured and secondarily bonded specimen. The final failure occurred in the noodle region for the co-cured specimen. but at the skin/frame termination point for the secondarily bonded specimen. Based on the results, it was found that two kinds of specimen show different failure modes depending on the manufacturing methods.
In this study, the stress reduction effect was evaluated for GFRP/Mg single lap bonded joints according to six different adherend shapes. Six different types of the single lap joint specimen were modeled and assessed using geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis. Moreover, three dimensional effect of stress distribution for the different adherend shapes was investigated. From the analysis, the dissimilar single lap bonded joint with the normal tapering and without the spew fillet (model 2) showed the highest stress values. In contrast, the peel stress values of both the square ended adherends with the spew fillet (model 3) and the reverse tapered adherends with the spew fillet (model 5) were 65.8% and 65.5% lower than the reference model.
Interfacial fracture toughness under various mixed-mode loading is measured to provide a mixed-mode fracture criterion of a composite/metal bonded joint. Experimental fracture characterization tests were carried out using a SLB (single leg bending) specimen, which controls mode ratio with the specimen thickness. The experimental result of the SLB test conforms that interfacial fracture toughness increases as the mode II component increases. The effect of loading mode on interfacial crack growth is investigated on the basis of crack path observation using microscopic image acquisition technique. The influence of interfacial roughness on adhesion strength is also discussed.
Since composite materials have anisotropic properties that depend on their stacking angle and sequence, the analysis of joints with isotropic adherends is limited in describing the behavior of the adhesive Joint with composite adherends. In this study, the nonlinear solution for adhesive joints with composite adherends was derived by incorporating the nonlinear behavior of the adhesive into the analysis. The behavior of the laminated composite tube was first analyzed, and the stress distributions of the composite tubular adhesive joint were calculated by including the nonlinear properties of the adhesive. The effect of the stacking sequence of composite adherends and bonding length on torque capacities of joints was examined, and results of the nonlinear analysis were also compared with those of the linear analysis.

An active study on UHPC, which has been recently used in high-rise building and bridges, is in progress. However, research on bonding shear strength of UHPC is required to be studied due to the lack of information. In this study, experimental research progress for bonding shear strength (shear strength of adhesive surface) evaluation of UHPC (Ultra High Performance Concrete) is proceeded. First, specimens that surface treatment methods of concrete bonded section and retardation time of placement are considered are produced. Second, Direct Shear test is applied on concrete bonded section of UHPC. As a result of this study, the highest bonding shear strength specimen in which compared to the non-retardation time specimen is compaction turbulence treatment. From later study, it is judged that strength of UHPC in accordance with direction of steel fiber when steel fiber of UHPC is mixed.

A vibration response-based detection system was used to investigate the adhesive areas of single-lap joints using a nonlinear transformation approach for deep learning. In industry or engineering fields, it is difficult to know the condition of an invisible part within a structure that cannot easily be disassembled and the conditions of adhesive areas of adhesively bonded structures. To address these issues, a detection method was devised that uses nonlinear transformation to determine the adhesive areas of various single-lap-jointed specimens from the vibration response of the reference specimen. In this study, a frequency response function with nonlinear transformation was employed to identify the vibration characteristics, and a virtual spectrogram was used for classification in convolutional neural network based deep learning. Moreover, a vibration experiment, an analytical solution, and a finite-element analysis were performed to verify the developed method with aluminum, carbon fiber composite, and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene specimens.

Substituting composite structures for conventional metallic structures has many advantages because of higher specific stiffness and specific strength of composite materials. In this work, one-piece propeller shafts composed of carbonfepoxy and glass/epoxy composites were designed and manufactured for a rear wheel drive automobile satisfying three design specifications, such as static torque transmission capability, torsional buckling and the fundamental natural bending frequency. Single lap adhesively bonded joint was employed to join the composite shaft and the aluminum yoke. For the optimal adhesive joining of the composite propeller shaft to the aluminum yoke, the torque transmission capability of the adhesively bonded composite shaft was calculated with respect to bonding length and yoke thickness by finite element method and compared with the experimental result. Then an optimal design method was proposed based on the failure model which incorporated the nonlinear mechanical behavior of aluminum yoke and epoxy adhesive. From the experiments and FEM analyses, it was found that the static torque transmission capability of composite propeller shaft was maximum at the critical yoke thickness, and it saturated beyond the critical length. Also, it was found that the one-piece composite propeller shaft had 40% weight saving effect compared with a two-piece steel propeller shaft.

Since the performance of joints usually determines the structural efficiency of composite structures, an extensive knowledge of the behavior of adhesive joints and the related effect on joint strength is essential for design purposes. In this study, the torque capacity of adhesive joints was predicted using the combined thermal and mechanical analyses when the adherend was a composite tube. A finite element analysis was performed to evaluate residual thermal stresses developed in the joint, and mechanical s stresses in the adhesive were calculated including both the nonlinear adhesive behavior and the behavior of composite tubes. Three different joint failure modes were considered to predict joint failure: interfacial failure, adhesive bulk failure, and adherend failure. The influence of the composite adherend stacking angle on the residual thermal stresses was investigated, and how the residual thermal stresses affect the joint strength was also discussed. Finally, the predicted results were compared with experimental results available in literature.
This work is about the development or asphalt sealant using the waste edible oil. Asphalt sealant has been used for crack filler and bridge deck joint sealer Several plasticizers such as aromatic or paraffin process oils, DOP, Bunker C fuel oil, and waste edible oil were compounded with the basic components such as asphalt(AP-5), a thermoplastic elastomer(SBS triblock copolymer), a tackifying agent(petroleum resin), and stabilizers. Penetration, softening point, ductility, and elongation by tensile adhesion of those asphalt sealant compounds were measured. Their properties were changed largely depending on both the type and content of plasticizers. Waste edible oil and DOP were the best plasticizers for the low temperature tensile adhesion characteristics. Penetration and elongation by tensile adhesion of asphalt sealant compounds increased with the increase of waste edible oil content and decreased with the increase of talc content. The manufacture of asphalt sealant with low penetration and excellent low temperature tensile adhesion was possible by the recipe optimization.
