Purpose: The effects of desensitizing agent are often for a short duration. One of the reasons is believed to be wear of desensitizing agent by tooth brushing. To reduce the wear and make the duration longer, dental bonding resin was applied and the changes of dentin permeability after toothbrushing were measured. Materials and methods: Extracted teeth free from caries were chosen. Coronal dentin discs with thickness of 1 mm were prepared. Using the split chamber device developed by Pashely, hydraulic conductance and scanning electron microscope images (SEM) were compared and contrasted before and immediately after the application of desensitizing agent and bonding resin and then after equivalent tooth brushing of 1 week, 2 weeks, and 6 weeks. Four commercially available desensitizing agents were used in this study; they were All-Bond 2, Seal & Protect, Gluma, and MS Coat. And Dentin/Enamel Bonding resin (Bisco Inc.) was used. The results of this study are as follows. Results: On all specimens, the hydraulic conductance decreased after the application of tooth desensitizing agent and bonding resin. Compared with the specimens treated only with desensitizer, the specimens treated with All-Bond 2, Gluma, MS Coat and plus D/E bonding resin had a little increase in hydraulic conductance after 1, 2 and 6-week tooth brushing. In case of Seal & Protect, the specimens showed the same result only after 6-week tooth brushing. On examination of SEM, the dentinal tubule diameter had decreased after treatment of desensitizing agents and bonding resin. And the specimens treated with All-Bond2, Seal&Protect, Gluma, MS Coat and plus D/E bonding resin had an significant decrease in diameter of dentinal tubule after 6-week tooth brushing. Conclusion: According to the results of this study, it is effective to use bonding resin after application of desensitizer in reducing the wear by tooth brushing and making the duration longer. In this study, just 6-week tooth brushing was performed, and it is not enough to regard it as a long-term data. So further study is needed and more perfect method for treating dentin hypersensitivity should be developed.

One of the most important and basic test of dental restorative materials is the evaluation of microleakage into the tooth-restorative interface. There are many techniques to test microleakage, but most of them have several disadvantages. Recently developed microtomography(micro-CT) can provide the three dimensional image and information about the internal component in non-destructive way, therefore using micro-CT, it is possible to evaluate microleakage exactly in quantitative manner. The purpose of this study is to find a new method for quantitative and non-destructive evaluation of microleakage in composite resin restorations using micro-CT and to compare the new method with conventional dye penetration method. Thus, microleakages of two kinds of dentin bonding systems were evaluated with above two methods. 40 extracted sound human premolars were randomly divided into two groups consisting of 20 samples and restored accordingly. Group 1 : Class V resin restorations with $Adper^{TM}$ Singe Bond Group, 2 : Class V resin restorations with $Adper^{TM}\;Promp^{TM}$ L-pop. The $Filtek^{TM}$ Supreme was applied to the Class V cavities of all teeth. After that, 10 teeth from each group were applied to evaluation of microleakage using micro-CT, and other 10 teeth from each group were using conventional dye penetration method. The conclusions of this study were as follow : 1 Using micro-CT, Group 1 showed significantly less microleakage than Group 2 and there was statistically significant difference(p<0.01) between two groups. 2. Using conventional dye penetration method, Group 1 leaked less than Group 2 and there was statistically significant difference(p<0.01) between two groups 3. The difference between two groups is more evident in the method using micro-CT. 4. In all two methods, microleakage appeared more into the cavities to dentinal margins than enamel margins.

Traumatic injuries to the primary dentition are commonly encountered problems in dental practice. It is found that 30% of the children had injuries to the primary dentition and 22% to the permanent dentition. The greatest incidence of trauma to the primary dentition occurs at the ages of 2 and 3 as children start to learn motor coordination. Because teeth and alveolar bone are traumatized simultaneously, alveolar bone fractures are likely to occur when multiple teeth are involved in injuries. Dental splints are indicated for the management of maxillofacial fractures. They enable anatomic reduction of fractured segments and help immobilization and maintenance of the fragments after reduction. They also act as a stabilizer during rehabilitation. Various types of dental splints are available. In this case, routine resin-wire splint technique could not be applied because of the child's uncooperative behavior. Oral sedation was not indicated because N.P.O. had not been preceded. Therefore, we decided to use open-cap acrylic splint instead. Stabilization using open cap acrylic splint requires minimum chair time with reduced discomfort to both patient and dentist. It is an effective means of splint for uncooperative children and especially useful when other means of fixation have been failed. Because trauma on the primary dentition can affect the underlying permanent tooth germ, it is important to monitor eruption process of the permanent dentition.

This study was performed to evaluate the quality of newly offered dentin bonding system($AdheSE^{(R)}$ One) by comparing the degree of microleakage measured with those of several conventional adhesive materials(AQ Bond Plus and $Adper^{TM}$ Single Bond 2). The quality of hybrid layer and resin tags was analyzed by observing restoration/ tooth interface under SEM. All-in-one system is in the limelight for having advantage of reducing chair time of children with difficult behavior pattern. Therefore the possibility of clinical application of All-in-one system was evaluated. The results obtained are as follows; 1. At the enamel margin, group II(AQ Bond Plus) showed the highest value of microleakage, and the other groups showed decreased value in order of group III($AdheSE^{(R)}$ One) and I($Adper^{TM}$ Single Bond 2). There was statistically significant difference between group II and the others(p<0.05), and no statistical difference was found between group I and III. 2. At the dentin margin, microleakage value was increased in order of group II, I, III and significant difference between all groups(p<0.05). 3. In group I and III, microleakage value measured at the enamel margin was significantly lower than that seen at the dentin margin(p<0.05), and there was no statistical difference in group II. 4. Resin tags observed under SEM were very weak and tangled in group II and III while the strong and thick tags were observed in group I. In conclusion, careful case selection and accurate clinical application is recommended in using AQ Bond Plus and $AdheSE^{(R)}$ One, giving consideration of the results showing its higher microleakage and weaker strength than $Adper^{TM}$ Single Bond 2.

The aim of this study was to compare the shear-peel strength and the fracture site of 5 commercially available orthodontic band cements. One hundred molar bands were cemented to extracted human 3rd molars. The specimens were prepared in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions for each cement. After storage in a humidor at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours, the shear debonding force was assessed for each specimen using an universal testing machine with crosshead speed of 2 mm/minute. Maximal failure stress was converted to mean shear-peel strength, MPa. The predominant site of band failure was recorded visually for all specimens as either at the band/cement or cement/enamel interface. Mean shear-peel strength of Ormco was the highest(2.44${\pm}$0.57), followed by Fuji $Ortho^{TM}$(2.24${\pm}$0.50), $Ketac-Cem^{TM}$(2.10${\pm}$0.57), 3M $Unitek^{TM}$(1.82${\pm}$0.43), $Band-Lok^{TM}$(1.73${\pm}$0.28). There were statistically significant differences between Ormco and $Band-Lok^{TM}$, Ormco and 3M $Unitek^{TM}$, and Fuji $Ortho^{TM}$ and $Band-Lok^{TM}$(p<0.05). The predominant site of bonding failure for bands cemented with the Ormco was at the band/cement interface, whereas bands cemented with Ultra $Band-Lok^{TM}$ failed predominantly at the enamel/cement interface. There was no significant difference among the other cements(Fuji $Ortho^{TM}$, 3M $Unitek^{TM}$, $Ketac-Cem^{TM}$).

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of a lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) extract on the inflammation of human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) and blood lipid improvement in hypercholesterolemic mice fed a high cholesterol diet. The lettuce extract (100% ethanol extract) inhibited the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 in HUVEC treated with tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ (TNF-${\alpha}$). The lettuce extract suppressed the adhesion of THP-1 to TNF-${\alpha}$-treated HUVEC. The lettuce extract decreased the TNF-${\alpha}$-stimulated production of proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-6, interleukin-8 and chemokine monocyte chemotactic protein 1. In hypercholesterolemic mice, the lettuce extract reduced serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol level, while the lettuce extract elevated high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol level, resulting in the decrease of atherogenic index and cardiac risk factor level. These results suggested that lettuce extract can be an useful resource to show an anti-inflammatory effect and improve lipid metabolism.

The significance of thermoplastic polyolefin polypropylene (PP) lies in its potential to replace polyvinyl chloride (PVC), the most widely used material for automobile interiors (door trim, dash board), which discharges harmful compounds in certain conditions. Another benefit of PP (0.855 amorphous - 0.946 crystalline $g/cm^3$) is its low density compared to that of PVC ($1.1-1.45g/cm^3$), which reduces vehicle weight. Market demand for eco-friendly water-based adhesive/coating material is rising significantly as a substitute for solvent-based adhesive/coating material which emits VOC and causes harmful working conditions. Under such context, in this study, a series of eco-friendly waterborne polyurethane-urea primer (a paint product that allows finishing paint to adhere much better than if it were used alone) for hydrophobic PP were prepared from different mix of DMPA content, NCO/OH molar ratio, various wt% of silicone diol and various soft segment content, among which DMPA of 21 mole %, NCO/OH molar ratio of 1.2, modified silicone diol of 5 wt% and soft segment content of 73 wt% led to good adhesion strength. Additionally, the incorporation of optimum content of additives (0.5 wt% dispersing agent, 0.5 wt% levelling agent, 1.5 wt% antifoaming agent, 3.0 wt% matting agent) into the optimum waterborne polyurethane-urea also enabled good stability, levelling, antifoaming and non-glossy.
This study was begun to search effect of contact angles of elastic rubber impression materials on the surface of working cast. Of elastic rubber impression materials with a Type III consistency, such as polysulfide, polyether and addition silicone, we selected one and then measured the contact angle after dripping a distilled water 3.3ml. Then, after pouring a dental anhydrite in three types of impression materials, we prepared a working cast and then examined its surface. Contact angle was measured using a full automatic contact angle measuring system (DM-700, KYOWA, Japan), and the surface of working cast was observed using a field emission scanning electron microscope (JSM-6700F, JEOL Ltd., JAPAN). The following results were obtained: 1) $Mean{\pm}SD$ (SD: standard deviation) of the initial contact angles were $91.3{\pm}20.5^{\circ}$ in the addition silicone materials, $90.0{\pm}2.2^{\circ}$ in the polyethers and $101.5{\pm}2.3^{\circ}$ in the polysulfides. These results indicate that mean values were similar but standard deviations of the three materials showed a great discrepancy. 2) As the time elapsed, addition silicone materials were found to have a contact angle decreased abruptly as compared with the remaining two types. That is, the initial contact angle was $91.3^{\circ}$ and it was abruptly decreased to $29.4^{\circ}$ after 25 seconds. 3) In the polyethers, the initial contact angle was $101.5^{\circ}$ and it was decreased to $90.7^{\circ}$ after 25 seconds. In the polysulfides, however, the initial contact angle was $90.0^{\circ}$ and it was $84.2^{\circ}$ after 25 seconds. This showed almost no changes in the initial contact angles. Moreover, its magnitude was greater than that seen in additional silicones. 4) There were significant differences in the contact angles between the three types of elastic rubber impression materials as the time elapsed (p<0.001). On an observation on the surface of working cast, addition silicone materials were found to have the most dense surface. This was followed by polysulfides and polyethers in a descending order.
Statement of problem: An incompatibility between the initiator systems of self-curing composite resins and light-curing adhesives was supposed recently. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the influence of activators for self/dual bonding on dentin shear bonding strengths. Material and methods: Fifty human molars were divided into 5 groups. A flat dentin surface was created for each tooth. A self-curing composite resin (Luxacore) was bonded with the following adhesives (n = 10); One-Step, Prime&Bond NT, AdheSE, Prime&Bond NT and AdheSE were also used in combination with activators. Shear bond strengths were measured after 24 hours of water storage. The specimens were loaded in shear in the Instron until failure at a 1 mm/min crosshead speed. Data were compared using one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD test (${\alpha}$= 0.05). Results: The dentin adhesive systems in order of decreasing median bond strength were One-Step > Prime&Bond NT with activator, AdheSE with activator > Prime&Bond NT, AdheSE. Among adhesives, One-Step had the highest bond strength. Prime&Bond NT with activator had higher bond strengths than Prime&Bond NT that was used alone, and so was AdheSE. Conclusion: Shear bond strengths were increased in Prime&Bond NT and AdheSE when these were used with activators comparing used without activators. But using activators was not effective clinically comparing One-Step.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of applying Silano-pen to feldspathic porcelain and zirconia on shear bond strength with composite resin. Materials and methods: Feldspathic porcelain and zirconia specimens were produced into 30 per each 2 mm thick and 12 mm in diameter and their surface was made smooth and even and then embedded in acrylic resin. The specimens were divided into each Group F (Feldspathic porcelain) and Group Z (Zirconia), (1) Hydrofluoric acid etching and silane (F1 & Z1), (2) Silano-pen and silane (F2 & Z2), (3) Hydrofluoric acid etching and Silano-pen, silane (F3 & Z3). After surface conditioning, substrate surfaces of the specimen were examined by SEM. Composite resin cylinders (2 mm high, 3 mm in diameter)were bonded to specimen and shear bond strength between ceramic and composite resin was measured by using universal testing machine. The measured values were statistically analyzed by using two way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparison test (${\alpha}=.05$). Results: In the scanning electron micrograph of the treated ceramic surface, Group F2 and F3 appeared the high roughness and Group Z3 appeared the highest density of silica particle. In Feldspathic porcelain, the result of measuring shear bond strength showed that Group F3 was measured to be highest and Group F1 was measured to be lowest but there was no statistical significance among Groups. In zirconia, Group Z3 was measured to be highest and Group Z1 was measured to be lowest and there was statistical significance among Groups (P<.05). Conclusion: In zirconia, applying hydrofluoric acid etching and then Silano-pen and silane is effective for composite resin adhesion.
