  • Two-dimensional nonlinear free-surface wave problems are analyzed with consideration of viscosity. Navier-Stokes equation and continuity equation are solved by the application of Finite Analytic Method, and MAC scheme is used far the treatment of free surface. Surface tension effect is also considered and laminar flow is assumed. The free-surface waves in shallow water, the flows around a vortex-pair with free surface and the wave ahead of a rectangular body are simulated to test the present numerical scheme. In the shallow water problem, viscous effect due to the friction on the bottom is observed. In the second problem, the approach of a vortex-pair to the free surface is simulated to examine the interaction of vortex-pair with the free surface. In the third problem, the wave ahead of a semi-infinite floating body is simulated.

  • Most of the landslides induced by rainfall in summer rainy season appear in the type of debris flow. Debris flow gives a lot of economic losses and human casualties due to high moving velocity and volume of debris flow. In order to analyze movement and deposition characteristics of debris flow, numerical analysis using FLO-2D program was conducted with various viscosities and yield stresses. As a result of numerical analysis, velocity and runout distance of debris flow decreased as its viscosity increased due to resisting force between particles of debris flow. Consequently, flow depth of debris flow increased and impact force decreased. Yield stress of debris flow affected its initiation and deposition characteristics. As yield stress increased, runout distance of debris flow decreased and its impact force increased. Based on the results of numerical analysis, it was found that velocity of debris flow mainly depended on viscosity, while deposition characteristics (runout distance, deposition width, deposition area) of debris flow depended on both viscosity and yield stress.

  • The physicochemical properties of erythritol were examined by measuring water absorption, solubility, water activity, heat stability, and viscosity compared to those of sucrose, xylitol, sorbitol and fructo-oligosaccharide. Erythritol showed the lowest water absorption and the highest water activity reducing capacity. In the solubility test of sweeteners, the saturation concentration of erythritol at $20^{\circ}C$ was 35.8%, which was the lowest solubility. Caramelization test and Maillard reaction test showed that erythritol was stabler than sucrose in heat treatment, while fructo-oligosaccharide showed the strongest reaction. The viscosity of erythritol was similar to that of other sweeteners at the same concentration (10%, 30% w/w). The viscosity of sweeteners increased exponentially with increasing concentration but decreased with increasing temperature following Arrhenius equation. The activation energy for flow of 30% erythritol solution was estimated to be 10.8 kcal/g mol.

  • The rheological properties of biopolymers produced by Bacillus sp. K-1 and its mutant strains(KM-21, KM-83) were studied. Apparent viscosity of biopolymers decreased as rising the temperature. The biopolymer produced by KM-21 strain showed 1.7 times low viscosity, 2.7 times low viscosity by K-1 and 1.9 times low viscosity by KM-83 at $80^{\circ}C$ compared with at $20^{\circ}C$ respectively. The viscosity of biopolymer solution also increased with increasing the polymer concentration and showed pseudoplastic characteristics which is high temperature dependency in all concentration. The change of the biopolymer viscosity on the pH showed the highest value at the pH 7.0 and it showed lower at acidic condition than at alkaline condition comparatively.

  • Grouting has been widely used to enhance the strength of the ground and prevent waterflow into the underground space in the geotechnical engineering field. Cement with bentonite can be considered a helpful grouting material because the bentonite has a swelling ability with water. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate the characteristics of grouting materials according to the mixing ratio for a successful grouting process. In this regard, the study investigated the viscosity and bleeding characteristics of grouting materials according to the mixing ratio (i.e., water/cement ratio and bentonite/cement ratio). In the experimental result, the viscosity increases with decreasing water/cement ratio and rising proportion of bentonite by weight of cement. However, the results of the bleeding ratio show the tendency is inversely proportional to the viscosity results. Bentonite was explored in terms of the viscosity and bleeding criterion. This result is expected to be meaningful to determine the optimized mixing ratio of bentonite-cement in the grouting field.

  • The influence of cholesterol on the physicochemical properties of the oleic acid was clarified through the measurements of density, viscosity, IR, $^1H$ NMR, self-diffusion coefficient for the oleic acid samples containing a small amount of additives such as cholesterol, cholestanol, cholestane, cholesteryl oleate, benzene, and ethanol. Cholesterol, possessing one OH group and one double bond in its molecular structure, largely increased the viscosity and reduced the self-diffusion coefficient and the intramolecular movement of oleic acid. Oleic acid forms a complex with cholesterol as well as with ethanol. On the basis of these complex formations and the existence of the clusters composed of oleic acid dimers, it was known the role and the fundamental mechanism of cholesterol to the intermolercular and intramolecular movements of oleic acid in the liquid state.

  • The present research focuses on a methodology to describe shearing response of clay with respect to temperature. An increase of temperature shifts the normal consolidation line to move down in the plane of void ratio and mean effective stress. The critical state line, however, does not move as much as the normal consolidation line in accordance with temperature increase. As temperature increase, therefore, the difference between the critical state mean effective stress and the pre-consolidation pressure reduces. To reflect this easily, the present study applies a bounding surface consisting of two parts divided by the critical state mean effective stress. This study calibrated a bounding surface for the soft Bangkok clay and performed elemental simulation for undrained triaxial compression tests. The elemental simulation showed that the model can describe the mechanical response upon temperature of clay without complex hardening and evolution rules compared to the experimental data.

  • In general, the shear strength of a clay specimen under the direct shear test and the triaxial compression test increases with an increase in the shear rate. This study investigates the effects of shear rate and silt content on the stress-strain behavior of remolded Gwangyang clay, by changing the shear rate and the silt content. Based on the results of the triaxial compression tests, the equi-strain line of remolded Gwangyang clay shows initially positive slope and then becomes flat at certain strain level. As the strain level where the equistrain becomes flat is different depending on the soil with different silt contents, this can be considered as the inherent property of soil.
