Effects of dietary polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate on the differentiation of mouse C2C12 myoblasts (식이성 폴리페놀 (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate가 mouse C2C12 myoblast 분화에 미치는 영향)

  • In the present investigation, we studied the modulating effects of (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate(EGCG) on the differentiation of mouse C2C12 myoblasts. We found that the strong inhibitory effect of EGCG on DNA methyltransferase-mediated DNA methylation induced transdifferentiation of C2C12 myoblasts into smooth muscle cells demonstrated by both morphological changes and immunofluorescent staining. C2C12 myoblasts treated with EGCG for 4 days expressed smooth muscle ${\alpha}-actin$ protein. Real-time PCR data revealed that smooth muscle ${\alpha}-actin$ mRNA was induced by EGCG treated C2C12 myoblasts in a concentration-dependent manner. Smooth muscle ${\alpha}-actin$ mRNA concentration increased 330% and 490% after 2 and 3 days of 50 ${\mu}M$ of EGCG treatment. The expression of another smooth muscle marker, transgelin, mRNA was also increased up to 9-fold by 4 days of EGCG treatment compared with control in a concentration-dependent manner. These results suggested that C2C12 enables to transdifferentiate into smooth muscle when gene expression patterns are changed by the inhibition of DNA methylation induced by EGCG. In conclusion, transdifferentiation of C2C12 myoblasts into smooth muscle is resulted from the modulating effects of EGCG on DNA methylation which subsequently results in changing the expression pattern of several genes playing a critical role in the differentiation of C2C12 myoblasts.

Reading Korean and Chinese Paintings Expressing the Ideas of Classical Literary Works - Focused on Interpretation of The Text (한국과 중국의 시의화(詩意畵) 읽기 - 텍스트의 해석을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this paper lies how the original text of Chinese classical literary works have been implemented in the paintings of China and Korea, and inspect the ways how of these original text interpreted in paintings. It is an experiment of trying to analyze through literature with painting and read again painting through literature. Qu Yuan(屈原) Prose Poem of Fisherman("漁父辭"), Tao Yuanming(陶淵明) Prose Poem of Returning Home("歸去來辭") and the prose with a poem on the peach blossom spring("桃花源記幷詩"), Du Fu(杜甫), Song of Eight Drunken Celestials("飮中八仙歌"), Su Shi(蘇軾), Odes on the Red Cliff("赤壁賦"), Ou Yangxiu(歐陽脩), Odes of the Sounds of Autumn("秋聲賦") and the paintings which based on these texts were the target of examination. These literary texts shared by Chinese and Korea have been compared in the aspects of acceptance and enjoyment. And on the basis of this process the characteristics of korean paintings expressing the ideas of classical literary works was induced. As a result, the following facts are derived. First, By the emergence of the typical style which was formed historically in China at the korean painting shows that korean painters not only actively embraced the art style of China also did not lose the international sense. Second, through the profound study for chinese painting, they transformed it in accordance with korean aesthetic view and finally revealed typical korean characteristics. Third, the results as described above showed the difference of perception and interpretation of literary works between China and Korea.

Antirapakivi Mantled Feldspar of the Albong Trachyandesite from Ulleung Island, Korea (울릉도 알봉조면안산암에서 산출되는 안티라파키비조직 장석의 성분)

  • In this study, the composition of feldspar phenocrysts observed in the Ulleungdo Albong trachyandesite lava dome was identified by performing point and X-ray element mapping surface analysis (EPMA). Plagioclase, which appears as a phenocryst in the Albong trachyandesite, corresponds to bytownite and labradorite, and andesine, and lath in the microphenocrysts and the matrix corresponds to andesine to oligoclase. Alkali feldspar mantled around plagioclase phenocrysts and microphenocrysts correspond to anorthoclase and sanidine. Plagioclase phenocrysts with a distinct zonal structure represent a normal structure in which the An content of the zoning decreases from bytownite to labradorite or andesine as it moves from the center of the phenocrysts to the edge. The edge of the phenocryst is surrounded by alkali feldspar, showing an antirapakivi texture. X-ray mapping of feldspar phenocrysts showed a typical antirapakivi texture. Normal zoning with distinct zoning showing a difference in component composition was clearly shown. The edges were mantled with alkali feldspar, and antirapakivi represents the texture. The antirapakivi texture of feldspar in the Albong trachyandesite may have been formed in the mixing system when alkali feldspar crystallized and mantled around plagioclase phenocrysts and microphenocrysts. This is because plagioclase phenocrysts and microphenocrysts in magma that had already crystallized are more mafic than trachyandesite magma.

This paper implements the construction and operation of a packaging platform that can instantly procure the required packaging products based on real-time orders and evaluates its performance. A Male Neonate with Prolonged Jaundice Secondary to 21-hydroxylase Deficiency (지속된 황달로 내원한 21-수산화효소 결핍증 남아 증례)

  • Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is a genetic disorder characterized by decreased cortisol secretion, with 21-hydroxylase deficiency being the most common type. It is uncommon for CAH to present primarily as cholestasis; therefore, when a patient presents with prolonged jaundice, it is difficult to suspect CAH immediately. In this report, we aim to share our experience with an exceptional case of 21-hydroxylase deficiency. A 28-day-old male visited the outpatient clinic due to prolonged jaundice and elevated 17α-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) levels in the newborn screening test. Since he showed no other symptoms such as lethargy or vomiting, he underwent a routine blood test for jaundice and a retest of 17-OHP at the outpatient clinic. Two hours after the blood draw, he was found to have severe hyponatremia and hyperkalemia, so he was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit. After treatment with hydrocortisone, fludrocortisone, sodium chloride, and intravenous fluids, the cholestasis and electrolyte imbalances improved over time. He was diagnosed with 21-hydroxylase deficiency, salt-wasting type, which was confirmed by the ACTH stimulation test and genetic testing. It is important to make a prompt diagnosis of CAH to avoid missing critical timing. Therefore, CAH should not be overlooked, even if the patient does not exhibit typical symptoms.

EFFECT OF METHYLPHENIDATE ON FUNCTIONAL CEREBRAL LOCALIZATION DURING ATTENTIONAL TASKS IN BOYS WITH ATTENTION-DEFICIT/HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (주의력결핍 과잉운동장애 남아에서 중추신경자극제가 주의력과제 수행 중의 대뇌 기능적 국소화에 미치는 효과)

  • This study aims at investigating the effects of psychostimulant on functional cerebral localization during the attentional tasks in ADHD. Inclusional subjects were 13 boy between 6-12 years old who met the DSM-IV criteria for ADHD. In each patient, there was a drugfree period(without methyphenidate) and a drug-loaded period(with oral methylphenidate administration), and within each period there was a resting state and a stimulated state with TOVA. Comparisons were made by measuring the amplitudes of four bands(${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$, ${\delta}$, ${\theta}$) of quantitative EEG to see if there were any differences between the drug-free period(resting and stimulated) and the drug-loaded period(resting and stimulated). In the resting state, there was no difference between the drug-free and drug-loaded periods. In the stimulated state with TOVA, the presence of methylphenidate induced significant changes in the theta to beta ratio(${\theta}/{\beta}$) in the right frontal, right parieto-occipital, and left temporal-parietal areas in contrast to the drugf-ree period. These data suggest that methylphenidate shows electrophysiological influences on cerebral topographical activities during the attentional tasks in ADHD.

  • EuiJae Hu BaekRyun is a symbol of Honam Namjonghwa and is respected as a teacher of Honam culture. He is from JinDo and is a relative of Sochi Heo Ryun and a disciple of Misan Heo Hyeong. The spirit of traditional Namjongghwa and the dignity of painting faithful to its technique have been obtained by themselves, and have made it his own. EuiJae organized a 'Yeonjinhoe' in Gwangju to raise his students. After liberation, a house was built under Mudeungsan Mountain. And showed another aspect as a social educator who emphasized and practiced national spirit while being a tea ceremony man. He excelled in Chinese poetry and painting theory, and expressed a unique field in calligraphy. especially worked as an artist good at poetry, caligraphy, and painting. EuiJae showed exceptional talent, especially in landscape painting. His tendency to paint was to follow Ye Chan's technique of drawing with a dry brush, placing importance on the energy of learning, and constantly trying new experiments with the technique of gisaeng. The world of EuiJae's works can be divided into three periods, based on the signature using the trend of painting or the change of perspective pursued, the era of EuiJae, the era of EuiJaeSanin, and the era of EuiDoin, which had a tendency of independent painting. EuiJae's contribution surpassed the artistic historical assessment that he had formed a big stem for the authentic Namjongghwa of Korean painting culture, which was part of Oriental painting. And recognizing that he was a fundamental teacher connecting modern times through the actual scenery based on NamDohwa's universal spirit and regional characteristics and the creative succession of emotions, he should inherit his passion for artistic spirit and tradition and experimental spirit.

Vibrio Vulnificus Induces the Inflammation of Mouse Ileal Epithelium: Involvement of Protein Kinase C and Nuclear Factor-Kappa B (회장 상피세포에서 비브리오균(Vibrio vulnificus)의 염증 유도 기작 연구: protein kinase C와 nuclear factor kappa-B의 관련성)

  • In the present study, we investigate the role of V. vulnificus in promoting the inflammation of mouse ileal ephitelium and its related signaling pathways. ICR mice were infected orally with V. vulnificus ($1{\times}10^9CFU$) for 16 h as a representative model of food-borne infection. To find the major portal of entry of V. vulnificus in mouse intestine, we have measured the levels of bacterial colonization in small intestine, colon, spleen, and liver. V. vulnificus appeared to colonize in intestine and colon in the order of ileum >> jejunum> colon, but lack in the duodenum, spleen, and liver. V. vulnificus in ileum caused severe necrotizing enteritis and showed shortened villi heights accompanied by an expanded width and inflammation, compared with the control mice. V. vulnificus induced ileal epithelium inflammation by activating phosphorylation of PKC and membrane translocation of $PKC{\alpha}$. V. vulnificus induced the phosphorylation of ERK and JNK, but did not affect p38 MAPK phosphorylation. Notably, V. vulnificus stimulated the I-${\kappa}B$-dependent phosphorylation of NF-${\kappa}B$ in mouse ileal epithelium. Finally, the ileal infection of V. vulnificus resulted in a significant increase in expression of proinflammatory cytokines and Toll-like receptors, respectively, compared to the control. Collectively, our results indicate that V. vulnificus induces ileal epithelium inflammation by increasing NF-${\kappa}B$ phosphorylation via activation of PKC, ERK, and JNK, which is critical for host defense mechanism in food-borne infection by V. vulnificus.

Acclimatization of in vitro Plantlets of Wasabia japonica(Miq.) Matsum. Derived from the Apical Meristem Culture (고추냉이(Wasabia japonica (Miq.) Matsum.)의 정단분열조직유래 기내묘의 순화)

  • The repeated subcultures of in vitro plant materials in wasabi became highly vitrified and the capacity for multiple shoot formation from the vitrified plant materials was very low. In order to improve the quality of in vitro propagated planting materials, the experiments were carried out using culture vessels capped with membrane filter(MF). When vitrified shoots were cultured on MS medium with 0.2mg/L BA in the vessels with MF or without MF for 60 days, the shoots in the vessels with MF did not vitrified. In contrast, the shoots grown in the vessels without MF vitrified at 65%. The stomates of vitrified leaves were circular and inflated, whereas those of normal leaves acclimatizated in the vessels with MF were ovate in shape. The hardened shoots were also cultured on MS media without sucrose containing 0.01mg/L IBA in vessels with(photoautotrophic culture) or without(control) MF. Sucrose was necessary for survival of the in vitro plantlets in the vessels without MF. After 20 days of culture, the shoots in the vessels without MF on the sucrose-free media turned yellow and died. But the shoots in the vessels with MF in the sucrose-free media produced a lot of roots. When shoots were cultured on MS medium with 2% sucrose containing 0.01mg/L IBA in the vessels with(photomixotrophic culture) or without(heterotrophic culture) MF, best growth occured in photomixotrophic culture.

Study on the Concentration Estimation Equation of Nitrogen Dioxide using Hyperspectral Sensor (초분광센서를 활용한 이산화질소 농도 추정식에 관한 연구)

  • The CleanSYS(Clean SYStem) is operated to monitor air pollutants emitted from specific industrial complexes in Korea. So the industrial complexes without the system are directly monitored by the control officers. For efficient monitoring, studies using various sensors have been conducted to monitor air pollutants emitted from industrial complex. In this study, hyperspectral sensors were used to model and verify the equations for estimating the concentration of $NO_2$(nitrogen dioxide) in air pollutants emitted. For development of the equations, spectral radiance were observed for $NO_2$ at various concentrations with different SZA(Solar Zenith Angle), VZA(Viewing Zenith Angle), and RAA(Relative Azimuth Angle). From the observed spectral radiance, the calculated value of the difference between the values of the specific wavelengths was taken as an absorption depth, and the equations were developed using the relationship between the depth and the $NO_2$ concentration. The spectral radiance mixed gas of $NO_2$ and $SO_2$(sulfur dioxide) was used to verify the equations. As a result, the $R^2$(coefficient of determination) and RMSE(Root Mean Square Error) were different from 0.71~0.88 and 72~23 ppm according to the form of the equation, and $R^2$ of the exponential form was the highest among the equations. Depending on the type of the equations, the accuracy of the estimated concentration with varying concentrations is not constant. However, if the equations are advanced in the future, hyperspectral sensors can be used to monitor the $NO_2$ emitted from the industrial complex.
