  • The aim of this paper is to investigate the effects of crack orientation on fatigue crack growth behavior in friction stir welded (FSWed) Al 7075-T651. Fatigue crack growth testing was conducted on compact tension (CT) specimens machined from the friction stir welds and the base metal under constant stress intensity factor range control. Tests were performed with the crack propagating nominally perpendicular to the weld line (termed the TL specimen) and the crack propagating in a parallel direction of the weld line (termed the LT specimen), and with three different constant stress intensity factor ranges. Both these specimen orientations were found to have a considerable effect on the fatigue crack growth behavior. Paris's law was adopted for the analysis of experimental results; the exponent m of the WM-LT specimen was determined to be 3.56, which was the largest value in this experimental conditions.

Spatial Randomness of Fatigue Crack Growth Rate in Friction Stir Welded 7075-T651 Aluminum Alloy Welded Joints (Case of LT Orientation Specimen) (마찰교반용접된 7075-T651 알루미늄 합금 용접부의 피로균열전파율의 공간적 불규칙성 (LT 방향의 시험편에 대하여))

  • This study aims to investigate the spatial randomness of fatigue crack growth rate for the friction stir welded (FSWed) 7075-T651 aluminum alloy joints. Our previous fatigue crack growth test data are adopted in this investigation. To clearly understand the spatial randomness of fatigue crack growth rate, fatigue crack growth tests were conducted under constant stress intensity factor range (SIFR) control testing. The experimental data were analyzed for two different materials-base metal (BM) and weld metal (WM)-to investigate the effects of spatial randomness of fatigue crack growth rate and material properties, the friction stir welded (FSWed) 7075-T651 aluminum alloy joints, namely weld metal (WM) and base metal (BM). The results showed that the variability, as evaluated by Weibull statistical analysis, of the WM is higher than that of the BM.

  • To overcome the limitation of ground inspection for Navigational Aid, Korea Airport Corporation (KAC) developed a drone system for Navigational Aid inspection. This drone system has the advantage that they can inspect the air radio signal at the perspective of user (aircraft). Since drones have more free flight paths and easier control of flight speeds compared to aircrafts, drones can check sections of suspected airborne radio wave distortions at desired paths and speeds. Recently, with the acceleration of the development around the airport, there is a concern about the deterioration of the quality of radio signal of Navigational Aid. In order to analyze radio distortion of Navigational Aid, a radio wave environmental survey was conducted using drones. When the signal received by each flight path of the drone was measured, the origin of the reflected wave was identified by analyzing the section in which the radio signal was distorted.

  • According to the progress of the electronic industry and radio communication technologies, mankind might enjoy its abundant life. On the other hand, many social problems such as EMI, and unnecessary electromagnetic wave occur due to the increased use of electromagnetic wave. Therefore, the organizations such as CISPR, FCC, ANSI, etc. have provided the standard of electromagnetic wave environment for the countermeasure of the EMC. It had been required that the absorbing ability of an electromagnetic wave absorber is more than 20dB, the bandwidth of which is required through 30 MHz to 1,000 MHz for satisfying the international standard about an anechoic chamber for EMI/EMS measurement. From November of 1998, however, the CISPR11 has accepted the extended frequency band from 1 GHz to 18 GHz additionally in the bandwidth of EMI measurement[1]. In this paper, we proposed a new type absorber satisfying the above requirements and carried out broadband design using the equivalent material constants method. Futhermore, the experiments were carried out over the frequency band from 30 MHz to 2 GHz, and hence, the validity of the proposed design theory was confirmed.

  • This study analyzed the propagation of dam-break waves in an area directly downstream of a dam by using 3D numerical modeling with RANS as the governing equation. In this area, the flow of the waves has three dimensional characteristics due to the instantaneous dam break. In particular, the dam-break flows are characterized by a highly unsteady and discontinuous flow, a mixture of the sharp flood waves and their reflected waves, a mixture of subcritical and supercritical flow, and propagation in a dry and movable bed. 2D numerical modeling, in which the governing equation is the shallow water equation, was regarded as restricted in terms of dealing with the sharp fluctuation of the water level at the dam-breaking point and water level vibration at the reservoir. However, in this 30 analysis of flood wave propagation due to partial dam breaking and dam-break in channels with $90^{\circ}$ bend, those phenomena were properly simulated. In addition, the flood wave and bed profiles in a movable bed with a flat/upward/downward bed step, which represents channel aggradation or degradation, was also successfully simulated.

  • This study experimentally investigates the characteristics of Lamb wave propagating in a composite plate of varied thickness. In practical aerospace structures, there are so many parts that have varied thickness. Therefore, in order to employ the Lamb wave in a structural health monitoring of those parts, it is necessary to understand correctly the characteristics of Lamb wave for the structure with thickness variation. Thin surface-bonded piezoelectric transducers, which have great potential in integrated monitoring systems for structural health, were used to generate and receive Lamb waves. The predicted propagation velocity under the assumptions of ideal mode conversions was compared with the experimentally measured one. The validity of the results was supported by the frequency analysis of the signals. Consequently, the results show that the transient region is occurred when Lamb waves propagate across the region that thickness variation over some gradient exists.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the ionosphere by monitoring VLF radio wave. For this purpose, we set up the SID(Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance) monitoring station in Pohang($36.03^{\circ}N$, $129.35^{\circ}E$), Korea receiving VLF radio wave(22.2kHz) transmitted from Ebino($32.04^{\circ}N$, $130.81^{\circ}E$), Japan. The observed data of radio wave intensities are analyzed to interpret the condition of the ionosphere. We can summarize the results as follows: Radio waves show regular daily variation. We can confirm the daily variation as a result of the formation of D layer. In relation to formation or extinction of D layer, intensity of radio wave gets weak right after sunrise and sunset. Southing altitude also affects the intensity of day time radio wave. At night when D layer disappears, the radio waves shows very irregular changes. The observed radio waves also shows the influence of the seasonal ionospheric variation. Long term observation could provide more detailed interpretation of daily as well as seasonal variation of ionosphere.

  • This paper was conducted for the purpose of evaluating the accuracy of the observed time difference in Loran-C when the ground wave propagated on the surface included both land sea. The time difference of X and Y station in North East Pacific Chain GRI 5970 was measured at 25 points in Cheju areas. The results obtained are as follows: (1) The errors of time difference for M-X pair are increased when the Loran-C wave propagates above 500m heights of Hanla mountain on propagation path between the observed point and master or X, Y slave station. (2) The errors of time difference for M-X pair are able to decrease by way of correction for the propagation velocity and the geodetic datum, but errors of the time difference for M-Y pair very irregularly because irregular terrain include in propagation path from X station and propagation path from Y station is twice longer than X station. (3) It is confirmed that accuracy of Loran-C fix can elevate by the way of all correction for a geodetic datum transformation, the propagation velocity with refractive index of radio wave and the propagation velocity over land.

  • Radio propagation in a high-speed railway is affected by ground reflective waves that are due to irregular reflection by the railway track, which consists of rails, sleepers, and gravel. This paper provides a train radio propagation model that simulates an irregular track reflective wave as a random variable. A simulation study using the train radio propagation model shows that the path loss exponent is around 3.0, indicating a reduced path loss compared to the value of 4.0 in the general mobile radio environment. Regressive analysis of the received signal strength indicators measured in the Gyeongbu high-speed railway showed the results identical to those of the simulation. These results confirm the train radio propagation model and can be applied to the coverage estimation and the design of a train radio network.
