  • The recent advance of information and communication technologies has made the identity of public libraries ambiguous. Few literatures have dealt with a local community public library from knowledge creation perspective. In this article we extend the applicability of the concepts such as knowledge management and knowledge city to local public libraries whose major role needs to change from the traditional book rental to knowledge and social capital creating entity. Based on the concepts, we propose a framework for analyzing the public library as a center of knowledge creation. Using the framework, we analyze the Ridgewood Public Library in New Jersey to test the validity of the framework.

  • A status analysis and focus group interviews with librarians, school librarians and experts were conducted to find a new direction for revitalization of 19 public libraries affiliated to the Chungcheongnam-do Office of Education in the context of the advent of a new educational environment following the 4th industrial revolution. Through the research method, the knowledge experience edu library through the library community school was set as the vision of a public library belonging to the Chungnam Office of Education. • This study aims at identifying the influence factors on public library patron numbers through a time-series analysis using the Korean National Libraries Statistical Data from 2014 to 2019. The facts found can be summarized as follows; First, the variables of books collection and periodicals appeared constantly to be unsignificant in the influence on public library patron numbers through the period from 2014 to 2019. This suggests that the internet may be substituting public libraries in the service of access to ordinary books and periodicals, which has been considered as a main function of public libraries. Second, such factors as cultural or books programs, library operation, user activities, and facilities turned out to be more significant and continual in the influence on public library patron numbers than the factor of books collection and storage. This means that public libraries have a complementary relation with the internet in these fields.
