  • The purpose of this article is to present comparative analysis of electronic information purchase in Korean university libraries relative to university libraries overseas. An overall comparison is made between libraries in Korea and in the U.S. in terms of their budget for electronic information. In addition, we compared the lists of web databases in service among three top-tier Korean universities and nine foreign universities(6 in the U.S., 1 in Canada, 1 in Australia, and 1 in China). The findings show that Korean universities tend to subscribe heavily to electronic journals packages than competing libraries overseas. However, in terms of providing subject-based reference databases, our libraries are far behind even mediocre institutions in these countries. We propose a number of recommendations to strengthen national licensing of electronic scholarly materials as a way to enhance access to electronic information through university libraries.

It first attempts to draw outcomes and suggestions on the basis of issues and implications identified through the analyses in the aspects of management, service, and infrastructure of academic resource sharing in other countries. For this job, research methods such as interviews and on/offline literature review are employed. Specific projects to be analyzed via literature and web site review, although not detailed in nature, are National Technical Information Service(NTIS) and The National Science Digital Library(NSDL) in the United States, Intute of United Kingdom, and Australian Research Repositories Online to the World(ARROW) of Australia. Next, the paper discusses such an issue as the orientation of national level academic resource sharing initiatives based on the comparison of characteristics of current academic resource sharing project. For this, a thorough comparison on background, outlines and characteristics of the projects and analysis on the specifics of each project were conducted as well.

  • Due to the recent technological improvements, the environments of e-books and its contents have been changed and the users of e-books have drastically increased. This study aimed to propose a model on how children access and search e-books in this digital era. For this study, a potential model was proposed based on the analyses on various information-seeking behavior models. For analyzing children's access and search processes on e-books, 30 children in five public libraries or school media centers in Seoul and Kyoungi-do areas were recruited for the in-depth interviews. As a potential model on children's access and search on e-books was re-visited and revised based on the results, a cyclic model of children's access and search on e-books was proposed containing six factors.
