  • This paper presents the control system of high-efficiency automotive 35W metal-halide lamp ballast using the new control method and planar transformer. In this paper, the electronic ballast is designed so that digital control method by microcontroller can be applied to the electronic ballast for the lamp requirement and peripheral environment in order that metal-halide lamp, which has the complicated transient features, is to be applied to the automobile even if it has superior features in brightness, color rendering, light efficiency, and lifespan compared to the conventional halogen lamp. Also, the efficiency increase of the ballast is devised by being varied the switching frequency of Flyback Converter following the battery input voltage of the automobile. Being designed for high-frequency switching transformer of converter in planar form, reduction of loss, weight, overall size are realized and efficient power control in the automobile that had the limited energy and the limited space of battery is devised. The results of the proposed system is verified through various experiment results.

  • This paper presents a high frequency modulation electronic ballast for the metal halide lamp. As the proposed ballast operates in high frequency ranges and can start up the lamp using the LC resonant circuit without external igniter, the proposed ballast is very compact and has a good efficiency in comparison with the conventional low frequency electronic ballast. The proposed ballast is controlled with the modulated frequency in the range of 20kHz to 100kHz in order to avoid the acoustic resonance phenomenon. In this paper, a new realtime acoustic resonance detection method is proposed to evaluate the characteristics of the ballast. The no load protection algorithm and power control algorithm through the detection of the DC link current are described. Finally, the experimental results on the proto-type ballast of 150w metal halide lamp with the proposed methods are discussed.

  • In this paper describes the process of designing a protection circuit against an open or short electronic ballast. An open electronic ballast creates high voltages in a regular period, which a lies voltage stress on switching devices. On the other hand, a shorted output generates excessive current, causing problems such as heat generation in the ballast and reduced lifespan of semiconductor devices. This study proposes a protection circuit consisting of TTL and passive devices to resolve the problems. The proposed protection circuit offers the benefits of low cost and high reliability. The proposed circuit was connected to an actual ballast to demonstrate its applicability.

  • This paper presents a design techniques for an electronic ballast of HID lamps. An electronic ballast for HID lamps usually employs a high-frequeocy resonant inverter and voltage-to-frequency converter to control the outpIt and a half-bridge and series resonant circuit are chosen for the ballast First, to design PI controller, the inverter with V/F converter is modeled with a transfer function and the controller PI gains are determined. This paper shows that an integral controller is only needed to control the current. Second, a se1f-feedback controller is proposed. This structure, simple and robust, is analyzed and a feedback gain is determined by using the inverter model. Experirrental system is built with a commercial 250W high pressure sodium lamp and the results show a validity of the proposed ballast and the total efficiency is increased by 5%.

  • In this study, design and control method using low cost Micro-controller(MCU) for inverter driving circuit in fluorescence lamp is presented. Soft starting technique is adopted to reduce switching loss and moment deterioration which are induced by high speed switching frequency in inverter ballast. Performance of the ballast stabilizer and the lighting characteristic of the fluorescence lamp have been improved by stabilizing switching pulses through the Pulse Width Modulation control.

  • Electric ballast is widely used to turn on the fluorescent. Electric ballast measure occurrence of harmonic through the actual measurement and it is simulated by modeling equivalent circuit for harmonic analysis. The purpose of this paper is to give an equivalent circuit modeling methodology for the harmonic currents generated by single-phase loads to evaluate a commercially available series resonant filter for the harmonic currents compensation based on the IEC 61000-3-2 and IEEE Std 519-1992 standards for limiting harmonic distortion.

  • This paper dealt with the design and fabrication of a low frequency electronic ballast for ruh attracting lamps. The proposed electronic ballast was composed of a full-wave rectifier, a step don converter operated as a constant power controled current source, an inverter operated by 130 Hz square wave, and an ignition circuit. An acoustic resonance phenomenon of discharge lamps could be eliminated by application of 130 Hz square wave. Also, a circuit of high voltage pulse generation for lamp ignition was added to the ballast. From the experimental results, voltage and current of the lamp operated by the electronic ballast were estimated 132.5 V and 7.6 A, respectively. and the power consumption was about 1,000 W. The weight of the ballast, which is one of important advantages, was reduced to one-fifth of conventional magnetic ballasts.

  • In this paper, High power factor electronic ballast using a double resonant Inverter for 250[W] MHD lamp is designed and implemented. Proposed electronic ballast is composed of configuration that is cascaded boost active PFC circuit as power factor corrector and half-bridge double resonant inverter Into two stage approach. Theoretical analysis of circuit and characteristics estimation is generally illustrated by using normalized parameter. To remove the phenomenon of acoustic resonance in the lamp, Simple frequency controller composed timer IC and driving IC is designed and employed on the ballast. The experimental results show that an high power factor electronic ballast using a double resonant inverter is operated stably.
