Low Phase Noise VCO Using Novel Harmonic Control Circuit Based on Composite Right/Left-Handed Transmission Line (혼합 우좌향 전송 선로 기반의 새로운 고조파 조절 회로를 이용한 저위상 잡음 전압 제어 발진기)

  • In this paper, a novel voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) using the harmonic control circuit based on the composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission lines (TLs) is presented to reduce the phase noise without the reduction of the frequency tuning range and miniaturize the circuit size. The phase noise is reduced by the novel harmonic control circuit having the short impedances for the second- and third-harmonic components. The proposed harmonic control circuit is designed by using the CRLH TLs with the dual-band characteristic by the frequency offset and phase slope of the CRLH TLs. The high-Q resonator has been used to reduce the phase noise, but has the problem of the frequency tuning range reduction. However, the frequency tuning range of the proposed VCO has not been reduced because the phase noise has been reduced without the high-Q resonator. The miniaturization of the circuit size is achieved by using the CRLH TLs instead of the conventional right-handed (RH) TLs. The phase noise of VCO is -119.17 ~ -117.50 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz in the tuning range of 5.731 ~ 5.938 GHz.

  • 본 논문에서는 WCDMA(Wide Code Division Multiple Access) 시스템 사양을 만족시키는 주파수 합성기 블록 중 위상잡음 및 전력소모의 최적 설계가 필요한 LC-VCO(voltage controlled oscillator)의 설계를 제안 하였다. 최적 설계를 위한 핵심내용은 LC-tank의 손실성분을 보상하는 MOS트랜지스터의 전달컨덕턴스와 인덕턴스 평면에 여유이득라인과 튜닝 범위 라인을 그어 설계 가능한 영역 내에서 위상잡음이 최소가 되는 인덕턴스 값을 구하고 선택하는 것이다. 제안한 최적 설계방법에 의해 진행된 LC-VCO의 시뮬레이션 결과 위상잡음 특성은 1MHz옵셋에서 -113dBc/Hz였다.

  • 본 논문에서는 샘플링 위상검파를 이용하여 고안정 마이크로파발진기를 설계하고 3체배시켜 30㎓대의 발진기를 설계하였다. 설계된 발진기는 병렬귀환 유전체공진과, 바랙터 다이오드를 이용하여 전압제어하므로써 자유발진 신호를 안정화 시켰다. 발진기의 저위상/고안정 특성을 위하여 마이크로파 샘플링 위상 검파회로를 이용하여 출력 주파수를 저위상/고안정 특성을 가지게 하였다. 병렬귀환 유전체공진발진기에 의한 마이크로파 샘플링 위상동기발진기는 발진주파수 9.733㎓에서 10.17㏈m의 출력값을 보였으며 3체배된 29.2㎓ 발진기의 위상잡음은 -95㏈c/Hz @10KHz와 -105㏈c/Hz @100KHz의 우수한 특성을 나타내었다.

  • In this paper, the low-phase dual-band VCO, by adding switching circuit with PIN diode at feedback loop of the oscillation part having negative-resistance, is realized. In order to reduce the phase noise of the VCO, PBG structure applied to the ground plane of the resonator. When applying for PBG structure, output power is -9.17㏈m and phase noise is -102㏈c/Hz at 5.25㎓, output power is -5.17㏈m and phase noise is -101㏈c/Hz at 1.8㎓, respectively.

  • In this thesis, PLVCO(Phase Locked Voltage Controlled Oscillator) using 24.42 GHz voltage controlled hair-pin resonator oscillator, Sequency divider, buffer amplifier, -10 dB directional coupler and phase detector is designed and fabricated for B-WLL. The PLVCO shows the oscillator output power of 16.5 dBm at 24.42 GHz, and phase noise of -76.3 dBc/Hz at 1001:Hz offset, -72.8dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset from fundamental frequency.

  • In this paper, the metamaterial transmission line (TL) based on the complementary spiral resonators (CSRs) and interdigital structure is presented for reducing the phase noise of the voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). The metamaterial TL is realized by adopting the array of the CSRs etched on the ground plane and the interdigital transmission line on the signal plane. The interdigital TL on the signal plane has been used to obtain higher Q value than the conventional TL without the interdigital structure. The resonance properties and inherent saturation of Q value of the proposed metamaterial TL have been analyzed by varying the width of the TL on the signal plane, dimensions of the CSRs, current directions between the CSRs, number of the unit cell-pair of the CSRs, and whether or not there is the interdigital structure in this paper. The phase noise and tuning range of the proposed VCO are -127.50~-125.33 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz and 5.744~5.852 GHz.

  • In this article, we designed a wide bandpass filter in order to apply microwave reflectometry for KSTAR. The proposed wide bandpass filter consists of a metamaterial structure which is to get a wide band, a lower insertion loss, and a high skirt. This is applied to VCO's output to enhance the linearity. A pass band is 18-28 GHz and the out of pass band is stopped over 20 dB. To confirm of the metamaterial, we suggest a dispersion diagram. The proposed filter in lower band and upper band of pass band is respectively a left handed and right handed characteristics. A group delay is below 0.5 ns.

  • High-linearity voltage-controlled current sources (VCCSs) circuits for wide voltage-controlled oscillator and automatic gain control are proposed. The VCCS consists of emitter follower for voltage input, two common-base amplifier which their emitter connected for current output, and current mirror which connected the two amplifier for large output current. The VCCS used only five transistors and a resistor without an extra bias circuit. Simulation results show that the VCCS has current output range from 0㎃ to 300㎃ over the control voltage range from 1V to 4.8V at supply voltage 5V. The linearity error of output current has less than 1.4% over the current range from 0A to 300㎃.

A Study on the Phase-looked Dielectric Resonator Oscillator using Bias Tuning (바이어스 동조를 이용한 위상 고정 유전체 공진 발진기에 관한 연구)

  • We implemented a PLDRO(Phase Locked Dielectric Resonator Oscillator) using the concept of the feedback property of PLL(Phase Locked Loop) for Ku-band(10.95-11.70 GHz). The conventional approaches to a PLDRO design use varactor diode tuning method.. But in theis paper, the PLDRO has the advantage of the frequency sensitivity to changes in the supple voltage of the oscillating device without the frequency-variable part by varactor diode voltage-control. and uses a SPD(Sampling Phase Detector) for phase-comparision. The PLDRO is composed of the DRO phase-locked to the reference signal of UHF band by using a SPD for high frequency stability and can be available for European FSS(Fixed Satellite Service) at 10.00GHz. The PLDRO generates the output power of 8.67 dBm at 10.00 GHz and has a phase noise of -81 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset from carrier. The hamonic and spurious characteristics have -42.33 dBc and -65dBc respectively. This PLDRO has much better frequency stability, lower phase noise, and more economical effect for a satellite system than conventional DRO.

Wideband and tow Phase Noise Voltage Controlled Oscillator Using a Broadside Coupled Microstrip Resonator (상하 결합 마이크로스트립 공진기를 이용한 광대역 저 위상 잡음 전압제어발진기)

  • In this paper, a novel VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator) structure is proposed to achieve the characteristic of low phase noise and a wide frequency tuning range. The proposed scheme adopts an impedance transforming technique to change a series resonance into a parallel resonance for maximizing the susceptance slope parameter. The manufactured VCO shows a frequency tuning bandwidth of 600MHz from 10.1GHz to 10.7GHz with a tuning voltage varying from 0 to 9V, an excellent phase noise below -119dBc/Hz@1MHz offset. The harmonic suppression is measured above 28dB.
