  • Underwater radiated noises from marine vehicles are mostly due to the propulsion systems. Recently, the propeller noise problems are becoming crucial issues in terms of habitability of passenger ships. Especially in military area, propeller noise is directly related to the survivability of submarines and warships, and thus propeller noise analysis and reductions are very important. Generally, propeller noise can be classified into non-cavitating noise and cavitating noise which is dominant. In this paper the methodology of propeller noise analysis is announced and new approach to consider scattering effect is proposed. Unsteady blade surface pressure and sheet cavity volume analyzed with potential based panel method are used as noise source.

  • In the past much effort has been made to utilize advanced computational fluid dynamic (CFD) programs for aeroelastic simulations and analysis. However, it is limited in the field of unsteady aeroelasticity due to enormous size of computer memory and unreasonably long CPU time. Recently, AAEMS(Aerodynamics is Aeroelasticity minus Structure) was developed for linear time-invariant, coupled fluid-structure systems. In this paper, to demonstrate further the efficiency and accuracy of the new model reduction method, we successfully examine AGARD 445.6 wing modeled by FLUENT CFD, FSIPRO3D and NASTRAN FEM(Finite Element Method) programs. Using the ROM(Reduced Order Modeling) one can predict flutter boundary as a function of the dynamic pressure.

  • In this study, transonic aeroelastic response analyses have been conducted for the business jet aircraft configuration considering shockwave and flow separation effects. The developed fluid-structure coupled analysis system is applied for aeroelastic computations combining computational structural dynamics(CSD), finite element method(FEM) and computational fluid dynamics(CFD) in the time domain. It can give very accurate and useful engineering data on the structural dynamic design of advanced flight vehicles. For the nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics in high transonic flow region, Navier-Stokes equations using the structured grid system have been applied to wing-body configurations. In transonic flight region, the characteristics of static and dynamic aeroelastic responses have been investigated for a typical wing-body configuration model. Also, it is typically shown that the current computation approach can yield realistic and practical results for aircraft design and test engineers.

  • In this study, steady and unsteady aerodynamic analyses of a huge rocket configuration have been conducted in a transonic flow region. The launch vehicle structural response are coupled with the transonic flow state transitions at the nose of the payload fairing. • The refrigerant after the expansion valve interchanges the heat at the evaporator. At this moment, the state of gas and liquid becomes two-phase flow and causes irregular noise. In order to avoid the noise, the two-phase flow pattern should be predicted. In this paper, the procedure to predict the two-phase flow patterns such as churn flow and annular flow was suggested using the CFD software. The experiments using refrigerant-supplying equipment was carried out and the noise levels according to the flow pattern were measured. The flow patterns predicted by this procedure showed good agreement with those by experiments. The churn flow is noisier than annular flow pattern.

  • The Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) has attracted attention as an alternative numerical algorithm for solving fluid mechanics, and its intrinsic unsteadiness and weak numerical damping make it more suitable for aeroacoustic problems. In this paper, applicability of the LBM for solving flow noise problems is tested by applying it to predict transmission loss of a simple expansion silencer. The time history of the static pressure is recorded at the inlet and outlet pipes. The transmission loss (TL) of the muffler is computed by using three point method and two source method, respectively. The TL calculated using the LBM is compared with that computed using finite element method (FEM) and measured data. It is found through these comparisons that the LBM is capable of predicting TL of the simple expansion silencer accurately, which it is difficult to predict using the conventional CFD methods based on the RANS solvers.

  • A three-dimensional elastic blood vessel model with internal diameter variation is considered to investigate internal flow characteristics and effects of structural deformation. Also, computational analyses for both the rigid model and the fully-coupled FSI model have been conducted in order to compare the shear stress, pressure distribution, and flow velocity in detail. A 70% narrowing area of asymmetric blood vessel model was especially investigated to show the versatility of fluid-structure interaction phenomenon. The results reveal that effect of fluid-structure interaction is very important to accurately investigate the flow characteristics of the blood vessel.

  • Complex pressure pulsation phenomenon in fuel rails is generated by rapid opening and closing of injectors and it commonly causes undesirable noise. In this study, fluid-structure interaction analyses based on CFD and FEM have been conducted to examine the pulsation damping characteristics for different shapes of fuel rails. It is shown from the present results that the fuel rail with a high aspect ratio rectangular cross section seems to be best in order to reduce the pressure pulsations. It also agrees well with the previous experimental test by Mizuno, K. et al.

  • In this paper, some dominant aeroacoustic characteristics of fans used in appliances are reviewed. The numerical attempts to analyze tile aeroacoustic noise of fans are briefly reviewed for various fans. Axial fans for refrigerator, cross flow fans fer air-conditioner, sirocco fans and turbo fans are anal: zed. The unsteady flow field, which is essential data for aeroacoustic analysis, is calculated by commercial CFD code. Acoustic pressure is calculated by Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings equation and Lowson's equation. During the analysis, dominant noise sources are identified.
