  • In order to satisfy customer's requirements of ride comfort and high performance, it is necessary for designers to fully understand vehicle aerodynamics and wind noise of newly produced cars because characteristics of flow and wind noise are heavily dependent on each other. In this study numerical and experimental study have been carried out to analyse the effect of flow characteristics at around of rear view mirror on wind noise and soiling on the front S/W. As a result, it's found that the spiral flow mear the front pillar is weakened and spreaded because rear view mirror obstructs the flow. It is also shown that there is abrupt change of gradient of separa- tion line, separation area, intensity of spiral flow and turbulent kinetic energy with varying shape of neck and housing of rear view mirror.

The numerical attempts to analyze tile aeroacoustic noise of fans are briefly reviewed for various fans. Axial fans for refrigerator, cross flow fans fer air-conditioner, sirocco fans and turbo fans are anal: zed. The unsteady flow field, which is essential data for aeroacoustic analysis, is calculated by commercial CFD code. Acoustic pressure is calculated by Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings equation and Lowson's equation. During the analysis, dominant noise sources are identified.

  • In the past much effort has been made to utilize advanced computational fluid dynamic (CFD) programs for aeroelastic simulations and analysis. However, it is limited in the field of unsteady aeroelasticity due to enormous size of computer memory and unreasonably long CPU time. Recently, AAEMS(Aerodynamics is Aeroelasticity minus Structure) was developed for linear time-invariant, coupled fluid-structure systems. In this paper, to demonstrate further the efficiency and accuracy of the new model reduction method, we successfully examine AGARD 445.6 wing modeled by FLUENT CFD, FSIPRO3D and NASTRAN FEM(Finite Element Method) programs. Using the ROM(Reduced Order Modeling) one can predict flutter boundary as a function of the dynamic pressure.

  • In this study, transonic aeroelastic response analyses have been conducted for the business jet aircraft configuration considering shockwave and flow separation effects. The developed fluid-structure coupled analysis system is applied for aeroelastic computations combining computational structural dynamics(CSD), finite element method(FEM) and computational fluid dynamics(CFD) in the time domain. It can give very accurate and useful engineering data on the structural dynamic design of advanced flight vehicles. For the nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics in high transonic flow region, Navier-Stokes equations using the structured grid system have been applied to wing-body configurations. In transonic flight region, the characteristics of static and dynamic aeroelastic responses have been investigated for a typical wing-body configuration model. Also, it is typically shown that the current computation approach can yield realistic and practical results for aircraft design and test engineers.

  • In this study, steady and unsteady aerodynamic analyses of a huge rocket configuration have been conducted in a transonic flow region. The launch vehicle structural response are coupled with the transonic flow state transitions at the nose of the payload fairing. • This paper describes the analysis of flow and aeroacoustic field around a car-like body. The governing equations, 3-D unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, are solved with the iterative time marching scheme. The Chimera grid technique has been applied to efficiently simulate the flow around the side-view mirror, After the flow field analysis has been converged, the aerodynamic noise analysis of the side-view mirror has been performed by solving Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings equation. From the present numerical simulation, the A- and C-pillar vortex are evidently shown and the aerodynamic noise level induced by the side-view mirror is predicted to about 100dB.

  • In this paper, flow noise characteristics of the hybrid vertical-axis wind turbine is investigated. Hybrid vertical-axis wind turbines consisting of two types of vertical-axis wind turbines, Savonius and Darrieus, are devised to maximize merits of one turbine and thus minimize demerits of the other turbine. In order to predict flow noise radiating from hybrid vertical-axis wind turbines, hybrid computatioinal aero acoustic techniques are used. First, unsteady flow fields around the turbine are predicted using computational fluid dynamics method. Then, the flow noise radiations from the turbines are predicted by applying acoustic analogy to the predicted flow fields. Based on numerical results, noise characteristics of a hybrid vertical-axis wind turbine is investigated and is compared with those of Savonius and Darrieus wind turbines.

  • In this study, performance, flow characteristics and noise of a cross-flow-fan system, used in indoor unit of the split-type air conditioner, were predicted by computational simulation. Triangular elements were used to mesh the calculation domain and quadrilateral elements were attached to the blade surfaces and walls to enhance the simulation quality. The unsteady incompressible Wavier-Stokes equations were solved using a sliding mesh technique on the interface between rotating fan region and the outside. Two stripes of velocity stream inside the cross-flow-fan were shown - the one was due to the eccentric vortex and the other was due to the normal entrance flow. As the flow rate increased, the center of the eccentric vortex moved toward the inner blade tip and rear-guide, and the exiting flow still had velocity variation along the stabilizer, which can increase the noise level. The acoustic pressure was calculated by using Lowson's equation. From the calculated acoustic pressure, it was found that the trailing edge is a dominant of acoustic generation.
