  • The sensor networks can be used attractively for various application areas. Time synchronization is important for any Ubiquitous Sensor Networks (USN) systems. USN makes extensive use of synchronized time in many contexts for data fusion. However existing time synchronization protocols are available only for homogeneous sensor nodes of USN. It needs to be extended or redesigned in order to apply to the USN with heterogeneous sensor nodes. Because heterogeneous sensor nodes have different clock sources with the SinkNode of USN, it is impossible to be synchronized global time. In addition, energy efficiency is one of the most significant factors to influence the design of sensor networks, as sensor nodes are limited in power, computational capacity, and memory. In this paper, we propose specific time synchronization based on master-slave topology for the global time synchronization of USN with heterogeneous sensor nodes. The time synchronization master nodes are always able to be synchronized with the SinkNode. Then time synchronization master nodes enable time synchronization slave nodes to be synchronized sleep periods. The proposed master-slave time synchronization for heterogeneous sensor nodes of USN is also helpful for power saving by maintaining maximum sleep time.

  • Wireless sensor network is based on an event driven system. Sensor nodes collect the events in surrounding environment and the sensing data are relayed into a sink node. In particular, when events are detected, the data sensing periods are likely to be shorter to get the more correct information. However, this operation causes the traffic congestion on the sensor nodes located in a routing path. Since the traffic congestion generates the data queue overflows in sensor nodes, the important information about events could be missed. In addition, since the battery energy of sensor nodes exhausts quickly for treating the traffic congestion, the entire lifetime of wireless sensor networks would be abbreviated. In this paper, a new congestion control method is proposed on the basis of genetic algorithm. To apply genetic algorithm, the data traffic rate of each sensor node is utilized as a chromosome structure. The fitness function of genetic algorithm is designed from both the average and the standard deviation of the traffic rates of sensor nodes. Based on dominant gene sets, the proposed method selects the optimal data forwarding sensor nodes for relieving the traffic congestion. In experiments, when compared with other methods to handle the traffic congestion, the proposed method shows the efficient data transmissions due to much less queue overflows and supports the fair data transmission between all sensor nodes as possible. This result not only enhances the reliability of data transmission but also distributes the energy consumptions across the network. It contributes directly to the extension of total lifetime of wireless sensor networks.

  • An e-business client application in ubiquitous mobile computing environment may become disconnected from the enterprise server due to broken communication connections caused by the limitation of mobile computing environments(limited battery life of the mobile device, low bandwidth communication, incomplete wireless communication infrastructure, etc). It Is even Possible that mobile client application Intentionally operates in disconnected mode to reduce communication cost and the power consumption of the mobile device. We use “data hoarding” as a means of providing local autonomy to allow transactions to be processed and committed on the mobile host despite of disconnection. The key problem to this approach is the synchronization problem that serialize potentially conflicting updates from disconnected clients on master objects of the server database. In this paper, we present a new transaction synchronizing method that splits a transaction into a set of independent component transactions and give the synchronization priority on each component taking the possibility of use and conflicts in the server into consideration. Synchronization is performed component by component based un synchronization priority. After the Preferred component of a no bile transaction succeeds in synchronization with the server, the mobile transaction can pre-commit at server. A pre-committed transaction's updated value is made visible at server before the final commit of the transaction. The synchronization of the component with low synchronization priority can be delayed in adaption to wireless bandwidth and computing resources. As a result, the availability of important data updated by mobile client is increased and it can maximize the utilization of the limited wireless bandwidth and computing resources.

  • In wireless sensor networks, the limited battery resources of sensor nodes have a direct impact on network lifetime. To reduce unnecessary power consumption, it is often the case that only a minimum number of sensor nodes operate in active mode while the others are kept in sleep mode. In such a case, however, the network service can be easily unreliable if any active node is unable to perform its sensing or communication function because of an unexpected failure. Thus, for achieving reliable sensing, it is important to maintain the sensing level even when some sensor nodes fail. In this paper, we propose a new fault-tolerance scheme, called FCP(Fault-tolerant Coverage Preserving), that gives an efficient way to handle the degradation of the sensing level caused by sensor node failures. In the proposed FCP scheme, a set of backup nodes are pre-designated for each active node to be used to replace the active node in case of its failure. Experimental results show that the FCP scheme provides enhanced performance with reduced overhead in terms of sensing coverage preserving, the number of backup nodes and the amount of control messages. On the average, the percentage of coverage preserving is improved by 87.2% while the additional number of backup nodes and the additional amount of control messages are reduced by 57.6% and 99.5%, respectively, compared with previous fault-tolerance schemes.

  • Location awareness is one of the key functionalities to build an U-city. Recently, many of works of the location-aware systems are emerging to commercially apply to on-going large-scale apartment complex based on U-city. As dwellers or cars being attached with active tags are moving in the U-city complex, the active tags periodically broadcast their own identifiers and receivers fixed along the street or in building use those information to calculate location of them. There are several issues to be considered for such an environment. The first is that the number of active tags operating in the same region are large as much as tens of thousands, and the second is that the active tags should be alive without change of batteries more than a year, hence low power consumption is very important. In this paper we propose i) a new architecture for location-aware system considering such issues, ii) technical issues to implement it using active tags, and iii) a mathematical analytic model to investigate overall performance and verify it by comparing with actual experimental results. Through the analysis we can show the theoretical boundary of the lowest packet loss rate and the maximum number of tags with acceptable performance for the systems based on active tags. The results can be applied to practical design of location-based systems of U-City projects.

  • Recently, the cameras which used for observation are installed in children protection area and local crime prevention area in order to protect life and property and by its work being recognized and are installed more. Normal cameras have cost problem to observe multiple area and detail, because they can observe only one place. PTZ camera can observe multiple area by moving focus by schedule or remote control, but it can't automatically move the focus of it to the place where event occurred, because it can't recognize the place. In this study, we can monitor multiple area effectively, by installing a wireless sensor node equipped with temperature, lighting, gas and human detection sensor to each area, to monitor many place low-price and actively and to move the focus of PTZ camera to preset position, and send recorded video to the user, when the various sensor data received from wireless sensors in observation area are to be determined abnormal by analyzing. In addition, at night we can record a scene using infrared, but to reduce power consumption of lighting system which are installed to improve resolution, it supplies power to the lighting system when event occurred. So we were able to implement low power green monitoring system.

  • Reflective and solar LED road studs are being used as a way of securing visibility for road environments. Road markers have various advantages and disadvantages in terms of versatility, efficiency, simplicity and visibility as individual products of reflective type and solar LED. However, in addition to the above, it is possible to prevent secondary accident after accident, It has a common drawback that it is difficult to have. In this paper, we propose a road stud system incorporating a wireless control function using RF - based communication with existing solar LED road studs and a system for controlling them. The proposed system is called the smart road stud system and it can control the equipment through the central control unit and the relay unit connected to the central control room by incorporating the RF communication function in the existing solar LED road stud. In addition, since it is possible to control the lighting method, color, etc. according to the road condition, it is possible to provide the driver with the state of the road to perform the function for preventing the second accident after the accident. It also adds features that minimize the ongoing power consumption of LED and RF communications. In order to verify the validity of the proposed system, prototypes were produced and it was confirmed that it is possible to act as a university for prevention of accident after accident by linking with other traffic system besides accident prevention function by securing existing visibility.

  • This paper presents a 0.2V DC/DC boost converter with regulated output for thermoelectric energy harvesting. To use low voltages from a thermoelectric device, a start-up circuit consisting of native NMOS transistors and resistors boosts an internal VDD, and the boosted VDD is used to operate the internal control block. When the VDD reaches a predefined value, a detector circuit makes the start-up block turn off to minimize current consumption. The final boosted VSTO is achieved by alternately operating the sub-boost converter for VDD and the main boost converter for VSTO according to the comparator outputs. When the VSTO reaches 2.4V, a buck converter starts to operate to generate a stabilized output VOUT. Simulation results shows that the designed converter generates a regulated 1.8V output from an input voltage of 0.2V, and its maximum power efficiency is 60%. The chip designed using a $0.35{\mu}m$ CMOS process occupies $1.1mm{\times}1.0mm$ including pads.

  • A capacitor self-calibration is proposed to improve the linearity of the capacitor digital-to-analog converter (CDAC) for an asynchronous successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with 10-bit resolution. The proposed capacitor self-calibration is performed so that the value of each capacitor of the upper 5 bits of the 10-bit CDAC is equal to the sum of the values of the lower capacitors. According to the behavioral simulation results, the proposed capacitor self-calibration improves the performances of differential nonlinearity (DNL) and integral nonlinearity (INL) from -0.810/+0.194 LSBs and -0.832/+0.832 LSBs to -0.235/+0.178 LSBs and -0.227/+0.227 LSBs, respectively, when the maximum capacitor mismatch of the CDAC is 4%. The proposed 10-bit 20-MS/s asynchronous SAR ADC is implemented using a 110-nm CMOS process with supply of 1.2 V. The area and power consumption of the proposed asynchronous SAR ADC are $0.205mm^2$ and 1.25 mW, respectively. The proposed asynchronous SAR ADC with the capacitor calibration has a effective number of bits (ENOBs) of 9.194 bits at a sampling rate of 20 MS/s about a $2.4-V_{PP}$ differential analog input with a frequency of 96.13 kHz.

  • Performance of a portable GC that can be utilized for the real time determination of volatile organic compounds in air was evaluated. It employs purified/compressed ambient air as the carrier gas eliminating the need for high pressure gas tanks. The compact system with dimensions of 35 × 26 × 15 ㎤ and weight of 5 kg is powered by either a 24 V DC external adapter or battery pack. Chromatograms of the mixture sample including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and oxylene at concentrations of 1 ppmv and 20 ppmv represent a good reproducibility: 3.79% and 0.48% relative standard deviations (RSDs) for peak area variations; 0.40% and 0.08% RSDs for retention times. The method detection limit was 0.09 ppmv. A 30 m long, 0.28 mm I.D. column operated at an optimal condition yielded a peak capacity of 61 with good resolution for a 10 min isothermal analysis. The relative standard deviations (RSD) of the peak area variations and retention times during consecutive measurements over 27 h were less than 2.4%RSD and 0.5%RSD, respectively. Thus, this instrument makes it suitable for continuous and field analysis of low-concentration VOC mixtures in the indoor/outdoor environment as well as the spillage accident of hazardous chemicals.
