  • The present study emphasizes a nonlinear model to predict the shear behaviour of reinforced concrete interior beam-column joints. To model the shear behaviour of a panel zone in the beam-column joint, a modified softened truss model theory for in-plane shear prediction was introduced. This relationship was changed to define the characteristics for the rotational spring to represent the shear deformation in the joint by an equivalent moment-rotation relationship from the joint equilibrium. The analysis model was compared with experiments on reinforced concrete interior beam-column joints that were subjected to axial and shear forces, and the current model was found to accurately predict not only the shear force but also the shear deformation in the joint.

  • In simply supported concrete beams with concentrated load, there is arch action that the internal lever arm length varies through shear span. Recently shear analysis model considering this effect has been developed, but the analysis algorithm is so complicated. Moreover, the variation of internal lever arm length is not considered on the shear compatibility condition. In this study, the shear analysis model is developed more simply and the variation of internal lever arm length is considered on the shear compatibility condition. From these modifications, an actual shear behavior of RC beams subjected to concentrated load could be expected from the results of the proposed analysis model.

  • Recently, many studies have been conducted on the structural behavior of HPFRCC, but most of the studies focused on the flexural behavior while studies on the shear behavior are limited. In this study, a model has been developed to reasonably predict the shear strength of a HPFRCC beam without stirrups. To develop the model, a HPFRCC beam was simply idealized with upper & lower chords resisting bending moment and a web shear element resisting shear forces. Then, taking into the account of the tensile behavior of HPFRCC, the main diagonal compressive strut angle and shear stress of the web shear element were evaluated on shear failure. Then, the shear strength of the HPFRCC beam could be evaluated. For the verification of the proposed model, the predictions by the proposed model were compared with the test results of 48 HPFRCC beams exhibiting shear failure. The results showed that the proposed model reasonably predicted the actual shear strength with an average of 1.045 and CoV of 0.125. This study are expected to be useful for related researches and design of members or structures to which HPFRCC is applied.

  • This study developed a shear strength prediction model of FRP strengthened reinforced concrete beams in shear. The primary design parameters were shear crack angle and shear span to depth ratio of FRP reinforcement. Of primary concern In the suggested model was the FRP debonding failure, which Is a typical fracture mode of RC beams strengthened with FRP, The proposed model used a crack sliding model based on modified plasticity theory. To address the effect of the shear span to depth ratio, the arch action was considered in the proposed model. The proposed model was applied to RC beams strengthened with FRP. The results showed that the proposed model agree with test results.

  • In the present study, a unified shear design method was developed to evaluate the shear strength of concrete beams with and without FRP shear reinforcement. The contributions of FRP and concrete on shear strength were defined separately. By comparing the current design method calculated results with the existing test results, it was found that Triantafillou model shows a reliable prediction of FRP effective strain and FRP shear strength contributions. The concrete shear strength contribution was defined by the strain-based shear strength model developed in the previous study. The shear strength of concrete compression zone was evaluated based on the material failure criteria of the concrete subjected to the compressive normal and shear stresses. The proposed strength model was verified by comparing its prediction results to prior test results. The comparisons showed that the proposed method accurately predicts the strengths of the test specimens for both FRP shear reinforced and unreinforced concrete beams.

  • This paper presents a model for evaluating the contribution by arch action to shear resistance in shear-critical reinforced concrete beams. Based on the relationship between shear and bending moment in beams subjected to combined shear and bending, the behavior of a beam is explicitly divided into two base components of the flexural action and the tied arch action. The compatibility condition of the shear deformation that deviates from Bernoulli bending plane is formulated utilizing the smeared truss idealization with an inclined compression chord. The Modified Compression Filed Theory is employed to calculate the shear deformation of the web, and the relative axial displacements of the compression and the tension chord by the shear flow are also calculated. From this shear compatibility condition in a beam, the shear contribution by the arch action is numerically decoupled. Then the validity of the model is examined by applying the model to some selected test beams in literatures. The results may confirm the rationale of the proposed behavioral model.

  • As building structures are becoming high-rise, large-scale, and specialized, the use of high-strength materials increase. Therefore, an analytical model is necessary to appropriately predict the shear strength of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with high-strength materials. This study presents a truss model which is able to reasonably predict the shear strength of the RC beams having high-strength steel bars. Test results of 107 RC beams reported in the technical literatures were collected to check the validity of proposed model, TATM, for the shear strength of the RC beams with high-strength reinforcing bars. They were compared to theoretical results obtained from proposed model, TATM, and existing truss models. The experimental results were better predicted by TATM rather than other truss models, and the ratios of experimental results to theoretical results obtained from TATM were almost constant regardless of the yield strengths of tension and shear reinforcements.

  • This paper predicted the shear deformation, such as strain of shear reinforcement and shear track width, of reinforced concrete (RC) members using Transformation Angle Truss Model (TATM) in order to apply to the shea, analysis of RC buildings. To check the validity of TATM for the shear deformation of RC beams, four RC beams with different shear span-to-depth ratios were cast, instrumented and tested. Observed results were compared with theoretical results by MCFT(Response-2000), RA-STM, FA-STM, and TATM. The proposed model, TATM, better predicted the relationships of the shear stress-strain of shear reinforcement and the shear stress-shear track width than other truss models.

  • Reinforced concrete bridge columns with relatively small aspect ratio show flexure-shear behavior, which is flexural behavior at initial and medium displacement stages and shear failure at final stage. Since the columns with flexure-shear failure have lower ductility than those with flexural failure, shear capacity curve models shall be applied as well as flexural capacity curve in order to determine ultimate displacement for seismic design or performance evaluation. In this paper, a modified shear capacity curve model is proposed and compared with the other models such as the CALTRANS model, Aschheim et al.'s model, and Priestley et al.'s model. Four shear capacity curve models are applied to the 4 full scale circular bridge column test results and the accuracy of each model is discussed. It may not be fully adequate to drive a final decision from the application to the limited number of test results, however the proposed model provides the better prediction of failure mode and ultimate displacement than the other models for the selected column test results.
