Distribution of the Kentish Plover (Charadrius Alexandrinus) Based on the 3rd National Ecosystem Survey and Its Adequacy as a Bioindicator (제 3차 전국자연환경조사를 이용한 흰물떼새(Charadrius alexandrinus)의 분포현황과 생물지표종의 제안)

  • In this study we analyzed the spatial and temporal distribution and preferred habitat type of the Kentish plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) based on the 3rd National Ecosystem Survey. Kentish plovers were observed in 97 maps out of a total 842 maps (11.8%) between 2006 and 2012, mainly along the western and southern coasts of Korea. They were also observed in the eastern coast of Korea, inland rivers (Han, Geum, Nakdong, Seomjin, and Yongsan River), the western and eastern coast of Jeju island, and Daecheong Island in the Yellow Sea. The observations were mainly made during the spring breeding season and migration seasons in spring and autumn. The occurrence of kentish plovers was positively influenced by the area of water and wetland according to the middle classification level of land cover type analysis and the area of coastal wetlands in the detailed classification level of land cover types. Most (90%) of the kentish plovers recorded maps had coastal wetlands. Kentish plovers were known to be susceptible to change of habitat. As the occurrence of kentish plovers could be associated with the habitat-change of coastal wetlands and it is possible to estimate the number of individuals, it is recommended that kentish plovers be used as a bioindicator species for the ecological assessment of ecosystem in intertidal zones.

Longitudinal Survey of Strix aluco During Breeding Season and Their Habitat in Korea -The First Reported Case Study (한국에서 올빼미 번식기 추적 조사 및 서식지 연구-첫 추적조사 사례)

  • In this study, we determined the ecological characteristics of Strix aluco, which is designated as an endangered category II species. Towards this, we identified the actual home range of Strix aluco that breed in Korea, and collected the data necessary for protecting, preserving and managing owl populations. This study was conducted from April 14 to May 20 of 2016 during the breeding season of Strix aluco as part of the 4th National Ecosystem Survey and in accordance with the Natural Environment Conservation Act. We captured and subsequently released a female owl with a total length of 423.5mm and a weight of 550g in Kyungbuk area, succeeded in tracking it for the first time in Korea and secured 6 points of direct observation and satellite tracking observation. The distance from the nest to the farthest point was 93m. As a result of the analysis of habitat points within a100m-radius during breeding period, it was established that their habitat consists of 34.2% of non-irrigated land, 30.6% of mixed forest land, 10.5% of orchard, and 9.4% of natural grassland. These findings are consistent with the previous estimate of home range studies. Further research based on follow-up studies on males or other individuals is required to develop a stronger basis for protection and conservation of endangered wildlife class II owls.

Complimentary Assessment for Conserving Vegetation on Protected Areas in South Korea (보호지역의 식물종 보전 상보성 평가)

  • The number of protected areas has been steadily increased in Korea to achieve Aichi Target 11, and there are studies on potential protected areas that required additional designation. However, there has been an insufficient assessment of the complementarity of protected areas to conserve biodiversity effectively. This study identified the potential habitat areas using the species distribution model for plant species from the 3rd National Ecosystem Survey and compared the plant species abundance in the existing protected area and the potential protected areas using the similarity indices, such as the Jaccard index, Sorenson index, and Bray-Curtis index. As a result, we found that the complementarity of the existing protected areas and most potential protected areas were low, leading to the preservation of similar plant species. Only the buffer zone for Korea National Arboretum had high complementarity and thus is important to conserve some species with the other protected areas. This study confirmed that it was necessary to select additional protected areas outside the existing or potential protected areas to protect plant species with a low inclusion ratio of potential habitats within the protected area. This study is significant because it identified the ecological representativeness of each protected area to examine if the individual protected area can conserve unique and various species and proposed a method of finding candidate areas for additional conservation spatially. The findings of this study can be a valuable reference for the qualitative improvement of protected areas through the complementarity assessments, including animals and the effectiveness assessment study of protected areas using the National Ecosystem Survey data in the future.

Long-term distribution trend analysis of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), based on National Fish Database, and the ecological risk assessments (전국자연환경조사 자료를 이용한 배스(Micropterus salmoides) 시공간 분포 분석 및 생태위해성 평가)

  • Using the data from the national survey of fish, we determined the population size and the distribution of Micropterus salmoides, which is a translocated species into the aquatic ecosystem of Korea. . The spatial concentration of this species was determined by performing an optimized hot spot analysis. After determining potential invasiveness and risk assessment, we measured the disturbance of biodiversity in the aquatic ecosystem. The result of distribution analysis indicates that the population of M. salmoides was concentrated in the major basins of Han river, Geum river, Nakdong river, and Yeongsan-Seomjin river, including the Jeju island. In particular, Nakdong river basin showed the highest appearance rate. On the contrary, Yeongsan-Seomjin river basin showed the lowest appearance rate. The Nakdong river and the Nakdong river basin were the areas with the high spatial concentration of M. salmoides. On the other hand, only Han river basin and Geum river basin had the lowest spatial concentration. The fish invasiveness screening kit(FISK) was used to assess M. salmoides, which inhabited a broad region of aquatic ecosystem: the assessment score was 31.0, indicating its 'highly invasive' nature. Our study aims to encourage research that improves the biodiversity and the conservation of M. salmoides in a priority area.

Development of Environment Assessment Technique and Biodiversity Management System and Their Application to Stream Ecosystems in Korea (하천생태계에 대한 환경평가 기법과 생물다양성 관리시스템의 개발 및 적용)

  • This paper introduces a study on the development of environment assessment technique and biodiversity management system for stream ecosystems and their application to Korean streams. Based on comprehensive field investigations from a series of streams of Bukhangang (North Han River) system as well as on long-term field survey and bibliographic data from streams throughout South Korea, schemes for environmental and biodiversity research of stream ecosystems aye reviewed; types of major environmental damages in Korean streams are classified; a rapid assessment technique for nature quality of stream ecosystems is presented; and a list of environmental and biotic factors for the use of GIS-based biodiversity management system in stream ecosystems is provided. The biodiveysity management system, which is based on ArcView and GEUS programs, is applied to Gapyeong Creek, a typical mid-size stream in Korea.

  • "농업 농촌 및 식품산업기본법" 제47조의 2 신설로 기후변화가 농업 농촌에 미치는 영향, 취약성을 5년마다 조사 평가 공표하고 실태조사를 실시하기 위한 법적 근거가 2014년 5월 마련되었다. 지구 온난화 등 기후변화가 농업 농촌에 미치는 영향을 심층적으로 조사 및 분석하여 기후변화에 선제적으로 대응해야 한다. 국가 수자원 총 이용량의 48%가 농업용수로 이용되고 있다. 논면적(964천ha) 수리안전답은 575천ha에 불과하고, 19.4%(187천ha)는 별도 용수공급시설이 없어 자연강우에 의존하고 있으며, 용수공급시설을 갖춘 관개전은 140천ha로 전국 밭면적의 18.5% 수준('15.7월 행정조사)에 그쳐 논에 비해 열악한 수준이다. 기후변화에 대응하여 농업용수의 안정적 공급을 위해 기후변화에 따른 농업용수의 영향분석 및 취약성 평가를 위한 지표 개발이 시급한 실정이다. IPCC에 따르면 기후변화의 영향과 심각성은 수자원, 생태계, 산림, 보건, 농업 및 사회기반시설 등 다양한 분야에서 관측 혹은 전망되고 있는데 특히 가장 취약한 부분은 강수패턴의 변화로 인한 영향이다. 강수패턴의 변화 의미는 강수 공간, 기간 및 강도의 변화를 의미하는 것으로 강수에 민감한 농업분야가 기후에 가장 먼저 영향을 받는다. 본 연구에서는 기후변화 관점에서 강수의 패턴 변화(공간, 강도, 기간)를 분석하여 농업용수에 미치는 영향을 평가하고자 한다.

A Characteristic Conservation and Application of Geomorphological Landscape Resources in National Parks, South Korea (우리나라 국립공원 지형경관자원의 유형 및 활용방안)

  • This study collected national secondary and tertiary nationwide natural environment survey data of the National Institute of Environmental Research as well as the National Park's secondary and tertiary natural resource research data executed by the Korea National Park Service. The data collection is aimed at reclassification the geomorphological landscape resources of each park in varying types. The results generated a total of 3,169 geomorphological landscape resources within all the national parks. Among all the geomorphological landscape resources, 794 landscape resources were judged as Level I, which accounts for 36.9%. Next, 546 landscape resources were judged as Level II, or 25.3%, and 459 landscape resources judged as Level III, or 21.3%. Lastly, 191 landscape resources were judged as Level IV, having the lowest conservation level, or 8.9%. The number of Level I landscape resources for each national park includes 207 sites on Seoraksan, 92 sites on Dadohaehaesang Park, 84 sites on Jirisan, and 60 sites at the Taeanhaean, respectively. Dadohaehaesang National Park, Seoraksan National Park, Taeanhaean National Park, Jirisan National Park, Songnisan National Park, and Gyeryongsan National Park were evaluated as national parks having excellent landscape resources. To use these excellent landscape resources, there is a need to increase visitors' satisfaction and increase their interest in and understanding of landscape resources. To achieve this, a landscape viewpoint map must be composed and installed at the entrance or at certain points to provide visitors with useful information regarding the geomorphological landscape resources.

A Comparative Study of Biotope Mapping between Korea and Germany (한국과 독일의 비오톱지도화에 대한 비교)

  • The purpose of this study is to derive political implications and to look into the establishment of new directions for the biotope mapping across the Korean territory so that such biotope mapping process could be used as a means of actual plan for natural environment preservation through the comparative study of biotope mapping methodology with that of the biotope mapping pioneer-Germany. As for research methodology, this study collected literature and data related to the biotope mapping of Korea and Germany and examined the general characteristics and inclinations about biotope mapping of both country, at a level of the national territory, federal government, provincial government, city and settlement areas. As a result of the examination, first, it was found that Germany drew up a landscape eco-type map and ecological landscape grade map throughout the nation in order to preserve and manage effectively by differential landscape eco-type unit. In contrast, Korea drew up a map on which Degree of Green Naturality and Ecological Nature Status are reflected for natural environment preservation at a nationwide unit. Secondly, the biotope mapping of German was worked centering on natural areas and their corresponding areas at German provincial government level and it drew up a Red-list by each province, while Korea has yet to carry out biotope mapping at a provincial level corresponding to Germany's. Thirdly, the biotope mapping on German cities and settlement areas includes not only big city areas but also medium & small cities and rural areas whereas Korean biotope mapping is conducted mainly centering on urban areas. In conclusion, this study suggests that the biotope mapping including natural areas and anti-natural area, not limited to city areas should be revitalized in order to be a real means of the all territory's balanced natural environment and biotope preservation & management. In addition, for this purpose, this study suggests that research on biotope pattern catalog and biotope red-list applicable to all territory should be preceded.

Standards Registry for Data and Metadata on Earthquake and Volcanic Disaster- Strategies and Directions in Implementation: Implications for Geomorphological Studies (지진 화산 재해 관련 데이터 및 메타데이터 표준 등록소의 개발 방향과 과제: 지형조사 분야에 대한 시사)

  • Earthquakes and volcanic information can vary in type and extent, from raw data to processed data. In order to be able to analyzed and modeled, information needs to be opened in any formats and provided with metadata from the Korea Meteorological Agency and related data production organizations. We propose the metadata and data registry related to volcanic disasters in a form that can be used in conjunction with the Korea Meteorological Administration system that manages earthquake and volcanic data in Korea. The standard registry refers to a virtual system that checks the standards developed for over 20 years in the field of geographic information and receives information registration to grasp the location of geographical features. It is not only data from natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanoes, but also national environmental survey results, and the cooperation system with other organizations dealing with national land information is also important, so a registry that creates and operates standards is necessary. Therefore, creating and operating the standard registry is necessary and expected to contribute to academic openness and data-driven policy.

  • This study established ecological goals and success criteria by using results of the coastal ecosystem restoration demand survey. The ecological goals are set for species diversity, regulation of seawater flow, improvement of purification, erosion prevention and habitat provision by ecosystem types. The indicators of success criteria are chosen the number of emergence species and community characteristics of target organism and pertinent items of hydrologic, water quality and sediment environment by ecological goals among the investigation items of tidal flat investigation guideline.
