  • In this study, Linked Data was used for extending bibliographic data, because Linked Data provides shareable identifiers, data structures, and link information. Linked Data is especially efficient in expanding bibliographic data integrated with bibliographic ontology. Therefore, Linked Data and bibliographic ontologies were analyzed and available Linked Data was suggested. By linking between meta-data schemes, bibliographic data, and authority data, issues for the effective Linked Data sharing were suggested: 1) selecting proper Linked Data for each bibliographic organization, 2) linking between different Linked Data, and 3) developing their own Linked Data for each bibliographic organization.

  • Various human resource information of the world can be found according to spread of social network such as facebook and twitter. There are an amounts of researcher information on the science and technology area but it is difficult to find a suitable researcher for research or business such as research partner, because researcher information is not systematically arranged. To solver this problem, we are constructing authority data system for science and technology based on authority information of overseas academic papers. In this paper, in order to construct the authority data, we extracts author identification elements from millions of overseas academic papers, which are published from 1994 to 2012. There are more than 50 author identification elements such as author name, affiliation, paper title, publisher, year, keywords, co-author, co-author's affiliation in Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese. We construct the element database by extracting and storing an author identification information based on the elements from overseas academic papers. Future works includes that the authority database for overseas academic papers is constructed by storing an academic activities of researchers after author clustering with these extracted elements. The authority data is used to improve the researcher information utilization and activate community to find a suitable research partner or a business examiner.

  • This paper provides suggestions for analyzing Cultural Objects Name Authority(CONA) developed by the Getty Trust and applying CONA to Functional Requirements for Subject Authority Data(FRSAD). CONA is linked with the other Getty controlled vocabularies such as AAT, ULAN, and TGN, and can be linked with the library controlled vocabularies, such as LCSH. However, CONA has differences with library models since CONA is based on the art museum or art gallery. Therefore, we need to consider it when we link CONA to library standard models. The results discussed in this study have implications for analyzing CONA which provides access for cultural objects and applying it to the FRSAD, the subject authority model in library fields.

  • This study developed a name access point control system for better performance of information retrieval from institutional repositories, which are equipped with authorgenerated metadata processes for self-archiving. In developing name access point control data for the system, the primary data were created from the existing authority. However, unlike the existing authority data, the primary data did not use any authority forms. Instead, the data utilized all the forms provided by the resources as access points. Specifically, field of activity(subject) and title information on authorship were used to distinguish between persons who have the same name. The result showed that the system improved the performance of the information retrieval. The system has been also expected to be utilized over other metadata provided by libraries, in addition to the institutional repositories, in order to provide better quality information.

  • Science and technology contents (research papers, patents, reports) are the most common reference material for researchers involved in research and development in the fields of science and technology. Based on various search elements (title, abstract, keyword, year of publication, name of journal, name of author, publisher, etc.), many services are available for users to search science and technology contents and bibliographic information owned by libraries. Authority data on organization name can be useful as an element for author identification and as an element to search for results produced by specific organizations. However, organization name is not taken into account by current search services for domestic academic information and bibliographic records. This study analyzes organization name data contained in the metadata of science and technology contents, which are the basis of the establishment of authority data, and proposes a method and system based on string containment and exact string matching.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how the titles and corporate names of Japanese scholarly journals are treated, and how well the authority control is implemented to assist the access with various names and forms of names to the OPACS. Without the help of either references or internal links among those names and forms of names in the DBs, users are likely to fail in getting the right results. In this study, the cataloging records for serials from the National Assembly Library, KISTI, Yonsei University and the KERIS were examined, and the comparison was made with the records from the NACIS-WebCat of the National Institute of Informatics in Japan. Major findings include (1) the lack of consistency in applying cataloging rules, (2) the lack of proper authority control in treating corporate names, and (3) the lack of references or links among names and variant forms of names. The overall improvement of cataloging practices and application of authority control is strongly recommended for enabling users to access better to those DBs of interest.

  • This study aims to develop a metadata schema for sports moving records based on a multiple entity model as an attempt to suggest an effective way to manage, retrieve, and utilize sports moving records. The multiple entity model consists of four entities - sports match, match contributors, moving records, and record management business - and metadata elements were developed for each entity. In addition, authority records for sports team and persons were created to ensure the consistency of terminology and provide rich contextual information. The suggested multiple entity model, metadata elements, and authority records for sports teams and persons were verified, modified, and expanded by a group of experts including a sports marketing expert and professors in the sports department.

  • This study is to suggest the concrete application plan of BIBFRAME under the development of BIBFRAME as library specific ontology for linked open data. The several research methods are used as the literature reviews, the case study of LC and LD4P, and the survey of cataloging librarians which is to grasp understanding level of the linked data related terms and requirements for constructing LOD. The application plan is suggested as follows. First, publishing name authority data and subject heading in LOD are prominent as the startup with creating terms list or vocabulary in LOD that has been used in library for controlled vocabulary and data value. Second, it is needed to develop BIBFRAME application and extension modeling in Korea, to map KORMARC and the properties and classes of BIBFRAME, and to develop the editor and MARC to BIBFRAME Transformation Tools. Third, the systematical training for cataloging librarians is designed to regard BIBFRAME related works as the librarian's main field. Therefore, this study would contribute to seek the practical application plan for BIBFRAME in Korea.

  • This study aims to explore preferred title and authorized access points for religious works with sample bibliographic data and authority data. To this end, this study (1) reviewed RDA and recently revised KCR as cataloging rules, (2) investigated the preferred titles and authorized access points of religious works in major national libraries as a case study, and finally (3) suggested a method for constructing preferred titles and authorized access points for religious works in Korean libraries using sample data. The data needed for the study were collected through literature research and case studies, and additional email inquiry with the catalog librarians was conducted. As a result of the study, preferred titles and authorized access points for religious works were proposed in the form of KORMARC bibliographic and authority data.

  • With the rapid progress toward a new cataloging model, the revision of Korean Cataloging Rules (KCR) are under discussion. The purpose of this study is to make a suggestion on constructing authorized access points for multilingual works, especially focused on the language and script of authorized access points. To the end, this study investigates (1) the extended functions and meanings of access points on the new model, (2) related guidelines and regulations reflected in International Cataloging Principles and typical cataloging rules, and (3) the characteristics of access points in the current Korean cataloging practices. Finally, (4) desirable languages and scripts of authorized access points representing multilingual works are suggested.
