  • Recently the earthquake occurrences in Korea are likely to increase. Therefore, the facilities such as bridges and tunnels under the unexpected earthquakes need to be enhanced. Especially most of the subways previously built before 1988 have not been seismically designed, so their seismic safety requirements are required to be inspected and/or reinforced. In this study, the seismic reinforcement using FRP-ductile material layered composites was proposed to reinforce for the subway columns. Material properties of FRP-ductile material layered composites were calculated by laboratory tests considering the laminated conditions of the composites. Numerical simulations were performed using the experimental results of the specimens and the calculated properties of the composites. Seismic performance varied according to the types of composites: ductile material, number of layers, fiber orientations.

  • Bending collapse of light-weight square tubes used for vehicle structure components is a dominant failure mode in oblique collision and rollover of vehicles. In this paper bending performances of aluminum-GFRP hybrid tube beams were evaluated in relation with bending deformation behavior and energy absorption characteristics. Aluminum/GFRP hybrid tube beams fabricated by inserting adhesive film between prepreg and metal layer were used in the bending test. Failure mechanisms of hybrid tubes under a bending load were experimentally investigated to analyze the bending performance as a function of ply orientation and composite layer thickness. Ultimate bending moments and energy absorption capacity of hybrid tube beams were obtained from the measured load-displacement corves. It was found that aluminum/GFRP hybrid tubes could be converted to rather stable collapse mode showing excellent energy absorption capacity in comparison to the pure aluminum tube beams. In particular, the hybrid tube beam with $[0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}]s$ composite layer showed a large improvement by about 78% in energy absorption capacity and by 29% in specific energy absorption.

  • This paper presents the illustration of application under attached point mass to the special orthotropic plates with a pair of opposite edges simply supported and the other pair of opposite edges free. Design engineers need to calculate the natural frequencies of such elements but obtaining exact solution to such problems is very much difficult. Pretlove reported a method of analysis of beams with attached masses using the concept of effective mass. This method, however, is useful only for certain simple types of beam. Therefore, considering the method has been developed by D. H. Kim(1974) is simple, accurate, and very effective for the plates with arbitrary boundary conditions and irregular sections, this paper calculates the natural frequencies of composite laminated plate under attached point mass/masses.

  • The fiber reinforced composite materials have many advantages due to their high strength-to-density ratios. Thus they have been widely used in many industrial applications. As the wave propagation are closely related to dynamic analysis of structures, it is very important to predict them. This paper presents a wave propagation in the axially loaded axial-bending-shear coupled composite laminated beams which are represented by the Timoshenko beam models based on the first-order shear deformation theory.

  • Dynamic analysis of laminated beams with a embedded damping layer under tension or compression axial load is investigated. Improved Layer-Wise Zig-Zag Beam Theory and Interdependent Kinematic Relation using the governing equations of motion are incorporated to model the laminated beams with a damping layer and a corresponding beam zig-zag finite element is developed. Flexural frequencies and modal loss actors under tension or compression axial load are calculated based on Complex Eigenvalue Method. The effect of the axial tension and compression load on the frequencies and loss factors is discussed.

  • Laminated rubber bearing is the most commonly used device for seismic base isolation of bridge structures. It is important to know performance and behavior characteristics of the laminated rubber bearings. The main evaluation factors of the rubber bearing are classified as compressive, shear and tensile behavior characteristics. The reference data of compressive and shear characteristics are rich, but the reference data of tensile characteristics is scarce. In this study, tensile test results of the rubber bearing with variation of shape factor and shear deformation are investigated for mechanical property. When tensile deformation in normal condition is increasing, tensile cycle behavior curve becomes non-linear and tensile breaking point is 300%. On the other hand, tensile breaking point is shear deformation condition is about 40%. Furthermore, when shape factor is lower, tensile breaking point is decrease. This results mean that tensile breaking point is decreased in triaxial tensile deformation because of cracks caused by internal void of the rubber bearings. This experimental data can be used as the reference data of tensile characteristics for designing seismic isolation of structures.

  • This study deals with thegeometrical nonlinear dynamic behavior of laminated plates made of advanced composite materials (ACMs), which contain central cutouts. Based on the first-order shear deformation plate theory (FSDT), the Newmark method and Newton-Raphson iteration wereused for the nonlinear dynamic solution. The effects of the cutout sizes and lay-up sequences on the nonlinear dynamic response for various parameters werestudied using a nonlinear dynamic finite element program that was developed for this study. The several numerical results agreed well with those reported by other investigators for square composite plates with or without central cutouts, and the new results reported in this paper showed significant interactions between the cutout and the layup sequence in the laminate. Key observation points are discussed and a brief design guide for laminates with central cutouts is given.

  • This study carried out a geometrical nonlinear dynamic analysis of laminated composite shell structures. Based on the first-order shear deformation shell theory and nonlinear formulation of Sanders, the Newmark method and Newton-Raphson iteration are used for dynamic solution considering nonlinear effects. The effects of radius, fiber angles, and layup sequences on the nonlinear dynamic response for various parameters are studied using a nonlinear dynamic finite element program developed for this study. The several numerical results were in good agreement with those reported by other investigators for square composite plates, and the new results reported in this paper show the significant interactions between the radius, fiber angles and layup sequence in the laminate.
