  • In this study, the raw material and tempers of bricks used in three brick tombs built in Gongju, during the Ungjin period of Baekje were investigated. The royal tomb of King Muryeong, the 6th tomb in the royal tombs, and Kyochonri brick tomb remained in Gongju and the bricks of each site had different shape and physical properties despite their similarity in raw materials. As the results of the mineralogical and microstructural analysis, the bricks of the royal tombs were made of refined raw materials, and were infrequently added crushed bricks(grogs) as a tempering material. On the other hand, thick and elongated pores of bricks from the Kyochonri brick tomb were frequently found, and the remains of plant carbonization are observed in their microstructures. Since the pores are mainly distributed in a thickness of 0.3 to 1 mm, it is estimated that bricks were produced by adding a certain size of the plant to refined soil, and grogs also were added as a tempering material. In particular, it was found that adding plants and grogs in raw materials of bricks caused thick pores or cracks in the internal structure. Since the bricks of the Kyochonri brick tomb have internal cracks and low firing temperature, the ultrasonic velocity of the bricks was lower than that of the royal tomb bricks. It means that the mechanical strength of these bricks were relatively low. Accordingly, it is estimated that the tempering materials, firing temperature, and internal structures of bricks can affect durability of the brick, and it can be thought as a difference in the manufacturing technology of brick making.

  • The purpose of this study is to attempt to use broken red brick, which is categorized as impurities of circular aggregate to thick aggregate, as a replacement for concrete. Through the material test and performance test for each mixing rate of the broken red brick (0%, 30%, 60%), the following conclusion was reached by studying the material and structural characteristics of circular aggregate to the concrete. Even though broken red brick, which is categorized as impurities of circular aggregate, is mixed 30% with normal rubble, the compression strength, intensity strength, and curving strength was similar to that of concrete that uses normal rubble. Therefore, concrete beam made with broken red brick can be applied to the real construction field. Also, the study regarding the cutting test of the concrete that uses broken red brick and regarding applying and mixing admixture that can increase the ductility factor will be required in the future.

  • Two experiments were conducted to examine how additional dotted lines and peripheral stimulus to the caf$\grave{e}$ wall illusion affect on the degree of perceived tilt (amount of illusion) and confidency of illusionary perception. The experiment 1 tested the effects of adding mortar (solid line) and bright contrast dotted lines to the borderline of 3 layers of blocks, which are consisted of black and white blocks. On the experiment 2, effects of adding peripheral stimulus on caf$\grave{e}$ wall illusion were tested. The results of experiment 1 showed that adding dotted line on the borderline mortar between blocks has additive effects on confidency of illusory perception. However, no effect on perceived amount of illusion was noted. On the other hand according to the results of experiment 2, adding blocks did increase amount, but not confidency of illusory perception. These results imply that the perception of caf$\grave{e}$ wall illusion is related with response of orientation selective neurons.

  • The waste garnet powder as a raw material for clay bricks was studied its recycling. The physical strength of clay bricks are closely dependent both on the contents of $SiO_2$, $Al_2$$O_3$, and $Fe_2$$O_3$in clay and on the viscosity of it. Although the garnet power has very high contents of $SiO_2$, $Al_2$$O_3$, and $Fe_2$$O_3$, it could not substituted to clay because of its low viscosity. Therefore the substitution of sand with waste garnet powder was considered to influence positively on the strength of clay bricks .Mixing ratios of {clay-sand}, {sand-garnet powder}, and {clay-sand-garnet powder} based on weight were controlled in the production of clay bricks. The properties of clay bricks such as compression strength, moisture absorption, shrinkage, and specific gravity has been evaluated. It was shown that the optimal mixing combination was found to be { clay(50%)-sand(30%)-garnet powder(20%)} as a weight basis. The present study indicated possibilities to produce commercially clay bricks with the waste garnet powder. An economical benefit will be produced in viable in view of recycling waste garnet powder.

  • Clay bricks with lime mortar are recently popular since they are eco- and environment-friendly construction material being capable of air flow and moisture movement. However, there is little study on those of clay brick an lime mortar while relatively many researches on the structural characteristics of concrete bricks with cement mortar are available in Korea. Furthermore, the current Korean Building Code of masonry structures was established on the base of the Foreign Codes which does not reflect Korean masonry construction circumstance, such as material characteristics and section properties. To overcome these problems, experiments of masonry structures constructed using clay bricks with lime mortar were carried out to evaluate their structural characteristics such as, prism compressive strength, adhesive strength and diagonal tensile(shear) strength. Also this research compares the mechanical characteristics between clay bricks with lime mortar and concrete bricks with cement mortar to provide information that will be used for revisions of the domestic standards for masonry structures. As masonry structures constructed with clay bricks and lime mortar show different aspects over the ones constructed with concrete bricks and cement mortar, we suggest estimation equation of prism compressive strength and diagonal tensile strength on masonry structures constructed with clay bricks and lime mortar.

  • This study investigates enzyme stabilization in clay-rock bricks through mechanical tests and image processing. Appropriate soil mixtures were designed using clay/crushed rock with ratios of 70/30, 60/40, 50/50, 40/60, and 30/70 by weight to verify the strength of the enzyme brick and soil compaction. The maximum compressive and flexural strengths in the 60/40 ratio mixture were found to be 5MPa and 1.25MPa, respectively; however, the maximum dry unit weight of $2.073g/cm^3$ was found in the 50/50 clay/gravel ratio mixture. Generally, the strength of the enzyme brick was improved by 27%. The paper concludes that in order to achieve optimal strength, soils should be mixed with the 60/40 clay/gravel ratio, which provides an adequate strength, while 50/50 ratio should be used for achieving more compaction. The SEM-EDX observation and Matlab image processing verified how the bond structure appeared after enzyme stabilization. It was found that enzymes created bond with the clay soil and the crushed rock for rendering strength and stability.

  • In this study, firing temperature of bricks from the Songsanri tomb complex is interpreted based on the mineralogical and physical changes of soil samples fired at different temperature. When soil samples were burned at 500 to $1,200^{\circ}C$, phase transition of clay minerals affected the mineralogical composition and microstructure, which leaded to alteration of physical features as color, water absorption and porosity. Mineralogical composition can be assumed to vary with the temperature by mineral phase stability, however, color, water absorption, porosity and microstructure had slow change under $1,000^{\circ}C$, and had rapid change from 1,000 to $1,200^{\circ}C$. Upon the mineral and physical alteration of soil, firing temperature of bricks from the Songsanri tomb complex were estimated. Some bricks were over fired at temperature more than $1,200^{\circ}C$, some high-burned bricks were fired from 1,100 to $1,200^{\circ}C$, some bricks were fired by 900 to $1,000^{\circ}C$ and some bricks ere assumed not to be fired. Henceforward mineralogical and physical study can be applied to interpretate more precise firing temperature.
