The coagulation efficacy of Al-based coagulants (such as Alum, PACS, and PACC) was investigated to ascertain removal efficiencies of turbidity and phosphate with variation of solution pH, coagulant dosages, and pre-dilution ratios. The efficacy of Al-based coagulants was maximized in the pH range of 6~9. Under the initial condition of pH 8, $10mg/L\;{PO_4}^{3-}$, and 20 NTU, Al-based coagulants exhibited a similar efficacy in the removal of turbidity, whereas the removal efficiency of phosphate was clearly dependent on the basicity of coagulants: Alum (0%) > PACS (45~50%) > PACC (70%). At high initial turbidity of 100 NTU, polymeric coagulants, such as PACS and PACC, exhibited a higher removal efficiency of turbidity compared to Alum. In comparison to direct injection of coagulants at low initial turbidity (20 NTU), 500~2000 times pre-diluted Alum, exhibited reduced coagulation efficacy; however, removal efficiencies of turbidity and phosphate increased with the increase of retention time. Pres-diluted PACC exhibited the enhanced coagulation efficacy followed by silght decrease of the removal efficiencies with increase of the retention time. At high initial turbidity of 100 NTU, pre-diluted Alum and PACC exhibited higher removal efficiencies of turbidity and phosphate.
We have already prepared a human lysozyme (HLY) structural gene from chemically synthesized 38 oligomers with high codon usage in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. For directing the synthesis and secretion of HLY in S. cerevisiae, two types of expression vectors, a YCp centromere-based vector, pHK101 and a YEp 2-$\mu\textrm{m}$ circle-based vector, pHK501 were constructed. With the resulting plasmids, we have confirmed that yeast transformant harboring pHK501 has more secreted HLY than pHK101-transformant by using a lysoplate and a turbidimetric assay. In flask cultivation, pHK501-transformant produced active HLY about 8 times (55 units/$m\ell$) higher than pHK101-transformant. From batch cultivation, the HLY productivity was obtained with 1.12 units/$m\ell$/h, corresponding to a 1.8-fold increase compared with flask fermentation. These results indicate that yeast transformant with pHK501 vector overexpressed and secreted HLY than that of YCp type vector.

Purpose : Some antibiotics were known to exert neuroprotective effects in the animal model of hypoxic-ischemic (H-I) brain injury, but the mechanism is still unclear. A recent study reported that geneticin (G418), an aminoglycoside antibiotic, increased survival of human breast cancer cells by suppressing apoptosis. We investigated the neuroprotective effects of systemically administrated geneticin via anti-apoptosis following the H-I brain injury Methods : Seven-day-old Sprague-Dawley rat pups were subjected to unilateral (left) common carotid artery occlusion followed by 2.5 hours of hypoxic exposure and the cortical cell culture of rat brain was done under a hypoxic incubator. Apoptosis was measured in the injured hemispheres 7 days after H-I insult and in the injured cells from hypoxic chamber using morphologic analysis by Terminal dUTP Nick-end Labeling(TUNEL) assay and immunohistochemistry for caspase-3, and cytologic analysis by western blot and real time PCR for bax, bcl-2, and caspase-3. Results : The gross appearance and hematoxylin and eosin stain revealed increased brain volume in the geneticin-treated animal model of perinatal H-I brain injury. The TUNEL assay revealed decreased apoptotic cells after administration of geneticin in the cell culture model of anoxia. Immunohistochemistry showed decreased caspase-3 expression in geneticin-treated cortical cell culture. Western blot and real-time PCR showed decreased caspase-3 expression and decreased ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 expression in geneticin-treated animal model. Conclusion : Geneticin appears to exert a neuroprotective effect against perinatal H-I brain injury at least via anti-apoptosis. However, more experiments are needed in order to demonstrate the usefulness of geneticin as a preventive and rescue treatment for H-I brain injuries of neonatal brain.

This study was conducted to determine the antioxidative and neuroprotective effect of pig skin extracts (PS) and pig skin gelatin hydrolysates (LPS) using a human neuroblastoma cell line (SH-SY5Y). The extraction yield of PS was 3 fold higher than that of LPS. The protein content of PS was about 10 fold higher than that of LPS (p<0.05). Also LPS increased antioxidative activity dose dependently, and the activity was significantly higher than PS at all concentration (p<0.05). DPPH radical scavenging activity of LPS at 50 mg/mL was 92.97%, which was similar to $1{\mu}M$ vitamin C as a positive control. ABTS radical scavenging activity of LPS (20 mg/mL) was 89.83% and oxygen radical absorbance capacity of LPS at 1 mg/mL was $141.39{\mu}M$ Trolox Equvalent/g. No significant change of human neuroblastoma cells was determined by MTT test. Cell death by oxidative stress induced by $H_2O_2$ and amyloid beta 1-42 ($A{\beta}_{1-42}$) was protected by LPS rather than PS. Acetylcholine esterase was significantly inhibited, by up to 33.62% by LPS at 10 mg/mL. Therefore, these results suggest that pig skin gelatin hydrolysates below 3 kDa have potential to be used as anti-oxidative and neuroprotective functional additives in the food industry, while further animal test should be determined in the future.

In this paper, we present integer and fractional motion estimation IP for H.264/AVC encoder by hardware-oriented algorithm. In integer motion engine, the reference block is used to share for consecutive current macro blocks in parallel processing which exploits data reusability and reduces off-chip bandwidth. In fractional motion engine, instead of two-step sequential refinement, half and quarter pel are processed in parallel manner in order to discard unnecessary candidate positions and double throughput. The H.264/AVC motion estimation chip is fabricated on a MPW(Multi-Project Wafer) chip using the chartered $0.18{\mu}m$ standard CMOS 1P5M technology and achieves high throughput supporting HDTV 720p 30 fps.
Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production from marine brown algae, Saccharina japonica, was investigated in anaerobic dark fermentation. In order to evaluate the VFAs productivity, various experimental parameters (i.e., physicochemical pre-treatment, microorganism inoculation ratio, substrate concentration, and pH) were evaluated. According to the physicochemical pre-treatment methods, the maximum concentrations of VFAs were obtained in the order of sulfuric acid, subcritical water and subcritical water with lipid-extraction. Also, we investigated the operating parameters such as microorganism inoculation ratio (MV/M = 10 to 30), the substrate concentration (18.0 to 72.0 g/L) and pH (6.0 to 7.0) in sulfuric acid pre-treatment method. When the substrate concentrations were 18.0, 36.0, 54.0 and 72.0 g/L at $35^{\circ}C$, microorganism inoculation ratio 15, pH 7.0 for 372 hours, the maximum concentrations of VFAs were respectively 9.8, 13.9, 18.6 and 22.3 g/L. The change in VFAs concentrations was detected that acetic- and propionic acids increased according to increasing pH, while the butyric acid increased with decreasing pH. The VFAs obtained from concentration and separation process may be used as basic chemistry materials and bio-fuel, and they will expect to produce alternative energy of fossil fuel.
Kaolinite [$Al_2Si_2O_5(OH)_4$] used in these experiments was synthesized at 250$^{\circ}C$ for 36 hrs by a hydrothermal process from amorphous $Al(OH)_3$ and $SiO_2$. The change of the mineralogical properties of the phase synthesized were observed in the pH range 2 to 9. The synthetic kaolinite were characterized by the analytical methods of XRD, IR, DIA, and FE-SEM. Kaolinite was obtained in a wide range of pH. The phases with high- to midium- defect kaolinite with high thermal stability were obtained from the acidic conditions and high-defect kaolinite with low thermal stability from the basic conditions. These variations of kaolinite properties appears to be related to the pH dependence of kaolinite surface speciation. The peaks intensity and resolution of the kaolinite decrease according to the alkalinity of the solution by the results of the IR testing. And the peak intensity increases in the 60 to 70$^{\circ}C$ range due to dehydration reaction observed by TG-DTA. Such phenomena was the result of increase of unreacted amorphous materials in the high pH condition, which could be identified by FE-SEM.
In this study, we isolated two species of bacteria for the powerful biotrasnformation of ginsenosides from Kimchi and human feces. Using biochemical tests and 16s rRNA sequencing, the selected strains were identified as Latobacillusplantarum (CKDHC0801) and Lactobacillussakei (CKDHC0802). Changes in cell growth and pH were examined in red ginseng. CKDHC 0801 and CKDHC 0802 reached their maximum growth phase after 24 hr and 48 hr, respectively, whereas the combined culture of CKDHC 0801 and CKDHC 0802 showed higher cell growth than bacterial strain alone. During fermentation of CKDHC 0801 and the combined culture, the pH values decreased from 5.2 to 4.2 after 24 hr, but CKDHC 0802 reached pH of 4.2 after 3day. The identities of ginsenosides were biotransferred from high molecular (Rg1 and Rb2) to low molecular (Rg3, Rg5, Rk1, PPD) by fermentation of both bacteria. Therefore, the results of this study demonstrate that CKDHC 0801 and CKDHC 0802 could be used to enhance to effects of red ginseng.
