In the precedent study it was presented that the comparison of thermal resistivity using various backfill materials including river sand regarding water content, dry unit weight and particle size distribution. Based on the precedent study, this study focused on developing the optimized backfill material that would improve the power transfer capability and minimize the thermal runaway due to an increase of power transmission capacity of underground power cables. When raw materials, such as river sand, recycled sand, crush rock and stone powder, are used for a backfill material, they has not efficient thermal resistivity around underground power cables. Thus, laboratory tests are performed by mixing Fly-ash, slag and floc with them, and then it is found that the optimized backfill material are required proper water content and maximum density. Through various experimental test, when coarse material, crush rock, is mixed with recycled sand, stone powder, slag or floc for a dense material, the thermal resistivity of it has $50^{\circ}C$-cm/Watt at optimum moisture content, and the increase of thermal resistivity does not happen in dry condition. The result of experiments approach the optimization of the backfill materials for underground power cables.
Fifty three diseased root samples of Chinese cabbage and 22 soil samples were taken from six alpine areas in Kangwon province to examine the organisms causing root rot of Chinese cabbage. Among thirteen microorganisms detected from diseased roots samples, Pythium ultimum, Pythium echinocarpum and Rhizoctonia solani were detected frequently and were pathogenic to Chinese cabbage. Five to 100% of young Chinese cabbage plants grown in the sample soils taken from alpine cabbage fields were infected either alone or together with P. ultimum, P. echinocarpum and R. solani, depending upon the or gin of sample soils. When relative density of the three organsims in the sample soils was estimated based on the infection frequency on the plants grown in those sample soils, P. ultimum was prevalent only in Chahang-i-li area. P. echinocarpum was prevalent in Yongsan-il-li, Hoengwe-li, and Munmaek areas. R. solani was solely found in Maebongsan area where both P. ultimum and P. echinocarpum were not detected. In the three areas where both P. ultimum and P. echinocarpum were present, density of P. echinocarpum was generally greater than that of P. ultimum. Seedlings of thirty major Chinese cabbage varieties were inoculated independently with the three organisms in the greenhouse. Six varieties were resistant to P. ultimum. Three and two varieties were moderately resistant to P. ultimum and P. echinocarpum, respectively. All varieties were highly susceptible to R. solani.

The hydrogeologic structure in the Chojung area was evaluated from a set of geological and geophysical investigations: detailed geological survey, vertical electric sounding (VES), borehole logging, and controlled-source magnetotelluric (CSMT) survey. Among these, CSMT soundings were taken for integrated interpretation to extend hydrogeologic structure with depth. The result of CSMT survey along with VES and borehole logging provides the vertical geologic boundary connected with hydrogeologic structure, and also indicates the depth of aquifer in granite basement. To interpret the geologic boundary and aquifer characteristics using CSMT data, we adopted the technique of 1-D inversion with smoothness-constrained method and 2-D continuous profiling with 1-D Bostick inversion and spatial filtering. The methodology tested and adopted in this study would be useful and required for providing a more information to the structure of fractured aquifer system.
An integrated geophysical survey was conducted to study a construction method of the Sonsanri tombs including the Muryong royal tomb. With the distribution of soil resistivity and self potential values, the boundary between original ground and the construction site was delineated clearly. The original ground has relatively high resistivity of $1,000\~1,500$ ohm-m and low self-potential values of $0{\pm}3mV/m$, while the construction site has low resistivity less than 200 ohm-m and quite high self-potential values of $-20\~30mV/m$. It is interpreted that the open site for construction of subsurface tomb has the size of about 35 m in the north-south direction. Big difference in characteristics of ground between the tomb site and the original site gives a clue for the construction method of tombs in Baekje dynasty. The site was opened about 35 meters in the north-south direction and then a mold structure was constructed with a brick frame outside. The brick frame consists of bricks cemented each other and structually combined. The mold structure was removed from inside after refill of the opened construction site with some cemented rock debris and soil.
Recently, resistivity surveys have been frequently carried out over the irregular terrain such as mountainous area. Such an irregular terrain itself can produce significant anomalies which may lead to misinterpretations. In this study, topographic effects in resistivity survey were studied using the physical scale modeling as well as the numerical one adopting finite element method. The scale modeling was conducted at a pond, so that we could avoid the edge effect, the inherent problem of the scale modeling conducted in a water tank in laboratory. The modeling experiments for two topographic features, a ridge and a valley with various slope angles, confirmed that the results by the two different modeling techniques coincide with each other fairly well for all the terrain models. These experiments adopting dipole-dipole array showed the distinctive terrain effects, such that a ridge produces a high apparent resistivity anomaly at the ridge center flanked by zones of lower apparent resistivity. On the other hand, a valley produces the opposite anomaly pattern, a central low flanked by highs. As the slope of a terrain model becomes steeper, the terrain-induced anomalies become stronger, and moreover, apparent resistivity can become even negative for the model with extremely high slope angle. All the modeling results led us to the conclusion that terrain effects should be included in the numerical modeling and/or the inversion process to interpret data acquired at the rugged terrain area.
The qualitative distribution of a fractured aquifer was characterized by electrical resistivity surveying as a part of basic groundwater investigation in Jangseong. The results were then used to choose sites for observation wells. The locations and distributions of permeable discontinuities were studied by analyses of temperature logs, a borehole image-processing system (BIPS), and hydraulic pressure testing using a double packer. The pressure test showed that the size of the discontinuities correlated with the Lugeon value and the results of the temperature log. The results show that temperature measurement is an effective method to identify permeable discontinuities, with the temperature difference correlating with the size of the aperture of the discontinuity.

Investigations of underground cavities are required to provide useful information for the reinforcement design and monitoring of the ground subsidence areas. It is, therefore, necessary to develop integrated geophysical techniques incorporating different geophysical methods in order to accurately image and to map underground cavities in the ground subsidence areas. In this study, we conducted geophysical investigations for development of integrated geophysical techniques to detect underground cavities at the field test site in the ground subsidence area, located at Yongweol-ri, Muan-eup, Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do. We examined the applicability of geophysical methods such as electrical resistivity, electromagnetic, and microgravity to cavity detection with the aid of borehole survey results. The underground cavities are widely present within the limestone bedrock overlain by the alluvial deposits in the test site where the ground subsidences have occurred in the past. The limestone cavities are mostly filled with groundwater or clays saturated with water in the site. The cavities, thus, have low electrical resistivity and density compared to the surrounding host bedrock. The results of the study have shown that the zones of low resistivity and density correspond to the zones of the cavities identified in the boreholes at the site, and that the geophysical methods used are very effective to detect the underground cavities. Furthermore, we could map the distribution of cavities more precisely with the study results incorporated from the various geophysical methods. It is also important to notice that the microgravity method, which has rarely used in Korea, is a very promising tool to detect underground cavities.
Various away methods are required in the electrical resistivity survey in order to find anomalous zone reliably. Array methods are classified as several groups. Among these group, a curved survey along the fixed elevation is designed to increase the mobility of men and survey equipments at the rough terrain. Another method is performed at the survey using inclined, curved, and horizontal boreholes. A survey can also be conducted in an arbitrary location by measurements of potentials for a multi sources. The complex data acquired using various away methods are represented by a correct images reconstructed from the 3D inversion. The element division is applied to the region in which the boreholes are curved and inclined because of a spatial discrepancies between the coordinate of each electrode and the nodal point in a model. The resistivity images are obtained from a good agreement for the anomalous zones in open slope and in survey using an inclined borehole.

In these days, the piezoresistive material has been applied to various sensors in order to measure the change of physical quantities. But the relationship between the sensitivity of a sensor and the position and size of piezoresistor has rarely been studied. Therefore, this paper was focused on the distribution of the resistance change ratio on the diaphragm and bridge surface where piezoresistor would be formed, and proposed the proper size and position of piezoresistor with which the sensitivity of sensor was increased. As the width of mass and boss was increased, the distance between piezoresistors was closed and the maximum value of resistance change ratio was decreased by the increase of the structure stiffness.

This study is derived relationships of the resistance coefficients of Darcy-Weisbach and Manning for flow resistance and the dimensionless velocity using many field measurements for 1,875 rivers consist of sand 179, gravel 992, cobble 651 and boulder 53 channels in natural rivers, respectively. The relationships of power law forms are developed as a function of flow discharge, friction slope, and relative submergence by the regression and the semi-empirical method. The measurements distribution of Manning resistance coefficients by the Box-Whisker Plots show the values which ranges from 0.004~0.151 for sand, 0.008~0.250 for gravel, 0.015~0.327 for cobble, 0.023~0.444 for boulder in natural rivers, respectively. Relationships of these semi-empirical and resistance coefficients will be useful to give information in hydraulic engineering.
