  • In this study, compression and shear characteristics of laminated rubber bearings and lead rubber bearings with various parameters are investigated by using material and geometric nonlinear three-dimensional finite element analysis. Rubber coupon tests are performed to make a model of the laminated rubber bearings. In addition, the material constants of the rubber are calculated by the curve fitting process of stress-strain relationship. The finite element analysis and experimental tests of the laminate rubber bearings are used to verify the validity of the rubber material constants. It is seen that the compression behavior of the laminated rubber bearings and lead rubber bearings mainly varies depending on the first shape factors and their shear behavior significantly varies depending on the second shape factors. In addition, the horizontal stiffness and energy dissipation capacity of lead rubber bearing are increased when the diameter of a lead bar is increased.

  • This work was focused on the material parameter extraction for the isothermal cyclic deformation analysis for which Chaboche(Combined Nonlinear Isotropic and Kinematic Hardening) and Overlay(Multi Linear Hardening) models are normally used. In this study all the parameters were driven especially based on Overlay theories. A simple method is suggested to find out best material parameters for the cyclic deformation analysis prior to the isothermal LCF(Low Cycle Fatigue) analysis. The parameter extraction was done using 400 series stainless steel data which were published in the reference papers. For simple and quick review of the parameters extracted by suggested method, 1D FORTRAN program was developed, and this program could reduce the time for checking the material data tremendously. For the application to FE code ABAQUS user subroutine for the material models was developed by means of UMAT(User Material Subroutine), and the stabilized hysteresis loops obtained by the numerical analysis were in good harmony with test results.

  • In this paper, we proposed a numerical model the complex permittivity for the E-glass fabric/epoxy composite laminate containing electrical conductive carbon black. The model is based on the percolation theory and for the composites over than the percolation threshold and in higher frequency band in that the AC conductivity is fully proportional to the frequency. The measurement for the complex permittivity wasperformed at the frequency band of 0.5 GHz $\sim$ 18.0 GHz using a vector network analyzer with a 7 mm coaxial air line. The proposed model is composed of the numerical equations of the scaling law used in percolation theory and constants obtained from experiments to quantify the model itself. The model describes the complex permittivity as the function of frequency and filler concentration. The model was verified by being compared with the measurements.

  • A stiffness model has been proposed to predict elastic constants of twisted yam composites. The model is based upon the unit cell structure, the coordinate transformation, and the volume averaging of compliance constants for constituent materials. For the correlation of analytic results with experiments, composite samples of various yam twist angles were tested, and strength and Young's modulus under tensile, compressive, and shear loading have been obtained. The sample was fabricated by the RTM process using glass yarns and epoxy resin. The correlations of elastic constants showed relatively good agreements. The model provides the predictions of the three-dimensional engineering constants, which are valuable input data for the analytic characterization of textile composites made of twisted yam.

  • Modeling of rubber for design or analysis often requires confusing or complex work because there are a large number of constitutive models to be considered. Some models have few material constants, while others have many. Researchers have to prepare and fit extensive experimental data with caution and discretion. In this paper, we first compared some typical rubber models in which deformation was carried out by stretching up to around eight times the original size. We conclude that continuum-based models and chain molecular models can be used in the study of the small deformation in most engineering applications, but chain molecular models are preferred in the study of the large deformations in most biomaterial applications. As discrimination problems, Treloar's patch and cylindrical balloon stick are tested theoretically and numerically for studying bifurcation. In the case of Treloar's patch, by using the Kearsley's equation, we show that bifurcation exists for continuum-based models but not for chain molecular models. Both models show bifurcation in the cylindrical balloon stick. Therefore, in the analysis of the bifurcation of rubber showed that its existence also depends on the constitutive model selected.

  • The flow stress of zircaloy-4 used in the spacer grid supporting a nuclear fuel rod was determined by the Johnson-Cook model, and model parameters were determined using reverse engineering. Parameters such as A, B, n and $\dot{\varepsilon}_0$ were determined by the tensile test result. To obtain the parameters C and m, a slot milling test and numerical simulation were performed. The objective functions were defined as the difference between the experimental and the simulation results, and then, the parameters were determined by minimizing the objective function. To verify the validity of the determined parameters, cross-verification for each case was conducted through a shearing test and simulation. The results tend to show agreement with the experimental results, such as the features of sheared edges and maximum punch force, with the correlation coefficients exceeding at least 0.97.

  • This study presents a nonlinear finite element procedure involving a phenomenological model to validate the tensile strain capacity of the X80 line pipe developed for the strain-based design purpose. The procedure is based on the Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) model, which models nucleation, growth and coalescence of void volume fraction occurred inside a metal. In this study, the user-defined material module (UMAT) is implemented in the commercial finite element platform ABAQUS and is applied to the nonlinear damage analysis of steel specimens. Material parameters for the nonlinear damage analysis of base and weld metals are calibrated from numerical simulations for the tensile tests of round bar and full thickness specimens. They are then employed in the numerical simulations for SENT (Single Edge Notch Tension) test and CWPT (Curved Wide Plate Test) and in the simulations, the tensile strain capacities are naturally evaluated. Comparison of the numerical results with the experimental results and the conventional empirical formulae shows that the proposed numerical procedure can fairly well predict the tensile strain capacity of X80 line pipe. So, it is readily expected to be effectively applied to the strain-based design procedure.

  • Numerous pavement response models rely on constitutive relationships to describe the response of granular materials. In this study, a nonlinear elastic constitutive model which is a function of bulk stress and octahedral shear stress is proposed to describe the resilient behavior of thick granular base courses under flexible airfield pavements. Special features of this model are its accuracy to predict the nonlinear resilient behavior, its simplicity to determine the material constants and its ability to model the secondary effect of decreasing the resilient modulus due to shear effects. In laboratory tests, the nonlinear resilient behavior of granular materials is investigated and values of resilient moduli are determined to provide data for verifying the proposed model. It is found that the resilient modulus is much more dependent on the states of stresses in terms of bulk stress and deviator stress than any other factors. Result of comparison shows that predicted values of resilient moduli are in good agreement with the measured values indicating that the proposed model is suitable to describe the nonlinear resilient behavior of the granular material with wide range of stress states which meet in airfield pavements.

  • The recent worldwide trend in construction industry tends to put emphasis on the performance based design which focuses on the suggestion of the performance of final products rather than method and procedures. A proper model should be employed when predicting the concrete strength, which reflects the material age, in order to verify the function of concrete structures and their materials. Accordingly, this paper proposes the concrete strength development constant (${\alpha}_{sc}$) reflecting the characteristics of domestic materials and then evaluates its suitability.
