The purpose of this study was to compare parenting stress between mothers who have young children with and without disabilities. The subjects of this study were 100 mothers who take care of disabled children and 123 mothers who take care of non-disabled children. The children's ages were from 3 to 6 years. The results of this study were as follows; First, the mothers who have disabled children have more parenting stress than those who have ordinary children. Second, the mothers who have developmentally disabled children had more parenting stress than mothers who had other disabled children. Children's and mothers' ages had an influence on the parenting stress of the ordinary mothers. The mothers who had children with and without disabilities got less parenting stress as the mothers received more higher parenting efficacy, parent role satisfaction, marital satisfaction and family support.
This study compared parental satisfaction between mothers who have young children with and without disabilities. The study subjects were 100 mothers who take care of disabled children and 123 mothers who take care of non-disabled children. The children's ages were from 3 to 6 years. Second, the children's age and the degree of disability had an affirmative influence on the parental satisfaction of the mothers who have disabled children. There were significant differences in the parental satisfaction of the mothers who have ordinary children according to mothers' age and their educational background. The parental satisfaction in both mother groups increased with increasing parenting efficacy, marital satisfaction and family support, and with decreasing parenting stress. Finally, parenting efficacy, children's age, parenting stress, and family support significantly predicted the parental satisfaction of the mothers who have disabled children while parenting efficacy, parenting stress, and educational background significantly predicted the parental satisfaction of the mothers who have ordinary children.
The purpose of this study was to determine types, causes and instructional methods of challenging behaviors perceived by mothers of young children with and without disabilities. Then it was also to determine influencing factors of mothers' socio-demographic variables and mothers' perceptions of types and causes of young children's challenging behaviors on using instructional methods perceived by the mothers. The subjects were 176 mothers of young children aged from two to six including 100 mothers of young children without disabilities and 76 mothers of young children with disabilities in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. Results showed that first, there were significant differences in areas on internalized challenging behaviors and avoidance of social activities for the types of challenging behaviors. Second, on the cause of challenging behaviors, areas on children's behaviors and nature had significant differences between the groups. Third, on instructional method of challenging behaviors, there were significant differences on areas of establishing supportive environment and social and emotional strategies. Lastly, for the mothers of young children without disabilities, mothers' educational background and children's nature area as cause of challenging behaviors significantly affected instructional methods. For the mothers of young children with disabilities, family's income and others area as cause of challenging behaviors affected instructional methods. Developing practical application strategies were suggested based on the results. Research limitations and further research suggestions were also discussed.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between maternal parenting attitudes and social competence in preschool children with disabilities. Among 3-to 7-year-old preschool children with disabilities in Daegu, 121 pairs of mother-child subjects were selected. The major findings of this study are as follows. First, there was a significant difference in the control area of maternal parenting attitudes on PMT according to child's age. Second, there were significant differences in the teacher ratings of social competence according to the severity of disability, child's age and father's education level. Third, the creativity area of maternal attitudes was significantly correlated with social competence.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the actual conditions and needs assessment of parental education for preschoolers with and without disabilities in integrated kindergartens. The subjects were 273 mothers and 121 teachers of preschool children with and without disabilities in integrated kindergartens in Daegu and Seoul. The major findings of this study were as follows. (1) Parental education for preschoolers in integrated kindergartens needs to be conducted with attention for the effect on parents of preschoolers with and without disabilities together. (2) The major contents of parental education for preschoolers in integrated kindergartens are 'understanding integration'. (3) Mothers need 'parental training of child's problem behavior' most. (4) Mothers need parental education for preschoolers in integrated kindergartens once a month, by experts, in a workshop. (5) The participation rate of fathers in parental education for preschoolers in integrated kindergartens needs to be increased.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to examine differences of psychological symptoms for mothers of infants with autism spectrum disorder(ASD) according to the level of parenting stress. Methods : The subjects were seventy-two mothers of infants with ASD(aged 22 months to 71 months) completed Korean Parenting Stress Index (K-PSI) and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory(MMPI-2). The data was analyzed using SPSS 23.0 program. Results : First, total and parent domain of parenting stress were positively correlated with several clinical scales of MMPI-2. However, there was no significant association between the child domain of parenting stress and clinical scale MMPI-2. Second, as a result of verified the difference of psychological symptoms according to level of total and parent domain of parenting stress, high-risks group was significantly higher scores in several clinical scales of MMPI-2 relative to those in normal range group. However, regarding the association between the child domain of parenting stress and psychological symptoms, there was no significant difference in psychological symptoms between high-risks group and normal range group. Conclusions : The results of this study have implications for verified the difference of psychological symptoms according to level of parenting stress among mothers of infants with ASD.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to examine differences in social maturity and behavioral problems according to the level of sleep problems in children with ASD. Methods : The participants were 102 mothers of infants with ASD aged 1-5 years. The Social Maturity Scales (SMS) and Child Behavior Checklist 1.5-5 were used as the measuring tools. Results : The level of sleep problems in infants with ASD was 56.58T on the sleep problems scale. The participants were grouped based on scores on the sleep problems scale: those with scores <65 (good sleepers) or scores ≥65 (poor sleepers). Sleep problems significantly correlated with all the scales on the CBCL. However, no association was found between sleep problems and social quotients. Poor sleepers achieved significantly lower scores on the social quotient scale of the SMS than good sleepers. Poor sleepers achieved significantly higher scores in internalizing problems, externalizing problems, and DSM-oriented scales on the CBCL compared to those in the good sleepers. Conclusion : The significance of this study is that it has verified the severity of sleep problems in infants with ASD and has examined the differences in social maturity and behavioral problems between poor sleepers and good sleepers.
The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of ADHD based on estimation of ADHD rating scale between mother-teacher and teacher-teacher. In total, 491 mothers and 23 teachers rated 689 5-year-old children on the K-ADHDDS. Descriptive statistics, in addition to independent and paired samples t-test were performed. Overall, the percentages of children with ADHD on the rating scale were 3% in combined type, 7.1-8.6% in predominately hyperactive-impulsive type, and 4.2% in predominately inattentive type. Boys tended to show greater tendency of ADHD than girls’: Overall, ADHD tendency in boys was 1.3 times greater than girls. Specially, 2.3 times more for hyperactivity, 1.4 times more for impulsivity, and 3.4 more for inattention. The correlation between mothers’ and teachers’ ratings were .35 for total, .40 for hyperactivity, .24 for impulsivity, and .28 for inattention, and there were no significant differences. Alternatively teacher and teacher ratings were .71 for total, .70 for hyperactivity, .70 for impulsivity, and .67 for inattention, and there were significant differences in inattention subscale(p < .01).
