  • Root is supposed to be important role in growth and yield formation of soybeans and also there is expected to exist varietal differences between soybean root morphology and system. 30 soybean varieties including 10 Korean recommended, 10 Introduced and 10 Korean native varieties were grown at field and pot under standard culture condition. Top and root characteristics were investigated at V4, R1 and R5 stage and T/R relations, correlations with yield were calculated. Top characteristics showed significant difference between 3 variety groups of Korean recommended, Introduced and Korean native variety. Stem length at R1 stage and stem length, stem diameter, number of nodes, number of branches, number of pods and grain yield at R5 stage were significantly different top characteristics. Root characteristics showed significant difference between 3 variety groups were number of thick primary root at V4 stage, primary root angle and root cutting strength at R1 stage, thick root diameter and root dry weight at R5 stage. The correlations between top and root characteristics and soybean yield was greatly different by soybean variety groups, and the top characteristics was more highly correlated then root characteristics. All the top and root characteristics of Korean recommended variety showed no correlations with yield. However, leaf area, stem length, top dry weight in Introduced variety and leaf area, top dry weight, number of nodes, number of thick primary root in Korean native variety were highly correlated with soybean yield.

  • These studies were carried out to evaluate the feasibility of using Alkali Digestibility Value (ADV) of soybean seeds as a selection criterion for cooking quality of soybean grain with rice, and to find out an optimal testing condition, varietal differences in ADV and the effect of cultural environment on the ADV, and its mode of inheritance. The ADV test was achieved succesfully by soaking the soybean grain for 24 hours in 25 to 30% KOH solution at 25 to $30^{\circ}C$. Varietal differences in the ADV were conspicuous, but cultural conditions affected the ADV little. All collected lines for cooking with rice showed high ADV and all the small grain cultivars introduced from abroad had low ADV, while recommended cultivars showed great variation in ADV. The characteristic of low ADV in soybean grains was controlled by single dominant gene.

  • In order to find out resistant varieties of the soybean to the cyst nematode. Heterodera glycines Ich. 64 soybean varieties were tested. 1. According to the result of investigations about correlation between numbers of cyst nematodes and soybean yields ; in pot test $Y=36.2-0.63\times(r=-0.74)$. and in field investigation $$Y=10.3-0.32\times(r=-0.56)$. There is a negative correlation between the density of nematodes and the soybean yield. 2. All of the recommended varieties were appeared susceptible; P I-84751. P I-90763. Southern-proripic. Keumgang-sorip. Baektai were appeared comparatively resistant ; and other varieties were appeared to be medium or susceptible. 3. Fewer larvae were developed into adult female cysts in resistant varieties than in susceptible ones.

  • This study was conducted 1)to determine the factors responsible for the gradually increased rice yield by examining any improvements in yield-related characters and physiological characters among the historically recommended varieties of rice in Korea, and 2)to reveal the way of achieving further yield improvement by breeding in the future. Eight recommended varieties from 1911 to 1988 were selected and grown at the same conditions. The yield-related characters were observed at the harvest time, and the physiological characters such as RGR, NAR, LAR, SLA and L WR were estimated by the classical method of growth analysis. The newer varieties are shorter and those released after 1970's are greater in percent of filled spikelets and harvest index than the older varieties. There are no definite changing trends in the variations of number of panicles per hill, number of spikelets per panicle and 1000 grain weight according to the course of evolution in the recommended varieties. There is little evidence of improvement in the physiological characters such as NAR, LAR, SLA and LWR among the recently developed varieties compared with those of the older varieties. The increase in grain yield due to variety improvement, if any, is largely associated with the greater harvest index and percent of filled spikelets by breeding blight resistant and / or lodging resistant genotypes with short culm. It is suggested that increase in NAR should be carried out simultaneously with increase in harvest index to breed high yielding genotypes. I t appears to be important to breed genotypes with long culm in order to enhance light penetration into the canopy as long as they are lodging resistant. Since NAR is negatively correlated with LAR, it is unlikely to succeed to improve both characters simultaneously. The direct effect of NAR on RGR by path analysis is much larger than that of LAR, and hence it is suggested that breeding genotype with large NAR is more effective on enhancing RGR. It is also suggested that improving LAR through LWR is likely effective on increasing RGR.

  • Sixteen recommended soybean cultivars in Korea were tested for resistance to Heterodera glycines. The nubmer of females which developed on roots of cultivars were fewer on 'Hwanggeum kong' and greater on 'Geumgangdaelib'. But there was no resistant cultivar to Heterodera glycines. Four field populations of Heterodera glycines tested for ability to reproduce on five host differentials. Geographical differentiations of H. glycines were newly founded in Korea. These were identlified to race 1 at Hwasun, race 5 at Yangsan and Suweon and Unknown race(or race C) at Seonsan.

  • Two species of root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita and M. hapla, were used in tests of soybean cultivars for resistance. Sixteen soybean cultivars were planted in the 20-cm clay pot and inoculated with each of M. incognita and M. hapla. Four soybean cultivars, Eundaedu, Baegcheon, Dongbugtae and Danyeobkong were resistant; Kwangdu, Hwanggeumkong, and Buseog were moderate, and the rest nine cultivars were susceptible to M. incognita. Jangyeobkong only was resistant, Danyeobkong, Hill, Dongbutae, Hamandaerip and Chungbugbaeg were moderate, and the rest ten cultivars were susceptible to M. hapla. There were no cultivars resistant to both nematodes although Dongbugtae and Danyeobkong were resistant to M. incognita and moderately resistant to M. hapla.

  • To develop good soybean varieties for sprouts. 285 indigenous lines and 16 recommending varieties were evaluated by the sprout and agronomic characteristics. The range of whole length, hypocotyl length, root length, and yield rate of sprouts was 9.5~23.0cm, 5.9~15.1cm, 3.2~9.2cm, and 121~695%, respectively. Yield rate of sprouts was the highest, 409%, in the lines of mixed seed coat color. At the same time, it was reversely proportional to seed weight : the smaller the seed weight, the higher the yield rate as in all other reports. The number of roots was significantly fewer in the lines of the black and the green seed coat color than others. Based on whole length, rate of root length, and yield rate of sprouts, many indigenous lines were evaluated much better than recommending varieties. In the hypocotyl color of sprouts, the brightness was higher in improved variety than indigenous lines but vice versa in redness and yellowness in general.
