  • The factors affecting the long-term design strength of geogrid can be classified into factors on creep deformation, installation damage, temperature, chemical degradation and biological degradation. Especially, creep deformation and installation damage are considered as main factors to determine the long-term design strength of geogrid. Current practice in the design of a reinforced soil structures is to calculate the long-term design strength of a geosynthetic reinforcement damaged during installation by multiplying the two partial safety factors, $RF_{ID}$ and $RF_{CR}$. This method assumes that there is no evaluation of synergy effect between installation damage and creep deformation of geogrids. This paper describes the results of a series of experimental study, which are carried out to assess the combined effect of the installation damage and the creep deformation for the long-term design strength of geogrid reinforcements. A series of field tests was carried out to assess installation damage of various geogrids with respect to different fill materials, and then creep tests are conducted to evaluate the creep deformation of both undamaged and damaged geogrids. The results indicated that the tensile strength reduction factors, RF, considering the combined effect between the installation damage and the creep deformation is less than that calculated by the current design method.

  • In this study, the long-term performance tests, which have extensibility, creep deformation, installation resistance and durability characteristic, is conducted to apply geosynthetic strip in field. The strength reduction factors using the test results are evaluated in order to calculate long-term design tensile strength. First, the creep deformation was evaluated by both the stepped isothermal method(SIM) and the time-temperature superposition(TTS) method. The creep reduction factor is reasonable to apply 1.6. Second, the result of installation damage test had little damage of yarn, which affected strength of reinforcement. Therefore, it can be analyzed that the installation damage of geosynthetic strip has little effect of long-term design tensile strength. Finally, the durability reduction factor considering chemical, biological and outdoor exposure resistance is reasonable to apply 1.1, which is considered the stability and economic efficiency of reinforced earth wall using geosynthetic strip.

  • In this study, a series of accelerated creep tests (SIM) was carried out on geosynthetic strip reinforcements with folding grooves having different tensile strengths (15 kN, 25 kN, 35 kN, 50 kN, 70 kN, and 90 kN) to analyze creep characteristics and to assess creep reduction factors. In particular, long-term creep tests were conducted on geosynthetic strip reinforcements with 25 kN tensile strength, which is widely used, to compare and analyze the accelerated creep test results. As a result, the creep reduction factor increased with an increasing design life of reinforcement. In addition, geosynthetic strip reinforcement using the same material and manufacturing method showed similar creep reduction factors at the same design life for different tensile strengths. When both long-term and accelerated creep test data were used, the creep reduction factors from the accelerated test were estimated to be 5.9%~7.1% less than those from the long-term creep test for the design life ranging from 50 to 100 years.

  • A series of installation damage tests and creep tests are performed to assess the combined effect of installation damage and creep deformation far the long-term design strength of geogrid reinforcement. Three types of geogrids are used to investigate the influence of the geogrid types. From the experimental results, it is shown that installation damage and creep deformation of geogrids significantly depends on the polymer types of the geogrids and the larger the installation damage, the more the combined effect of installation damage and creep deformation. In addition, The results of this study show that the tensile strength reduction factor, RF, considering the combined effect between installation damage and creep deformation is less than that calculated by the current design practice which calculates the long-term design strength of geogrids damaged during installation by multiplying two partial safety factors, $RF_{ID}$ and $RF_{CR}$.

  • Polyester woven geotextiles to be bonded with nonwovens were manufactured for reinforcement and the allowable strength of these were obtained by the results of creep tests. Long-term design strength were calculated in consideration with factors of safety for design and construction and the long-term behaviors of geogrids were compared to those of composite woven geotextiles to examine the reinforcement function. From the experimental results, it was confirmed that these woven composite geotextiles could have the sufficient performance as an alternative geosynthetics instead of geogrids and the further study will be continue to confirm the possibility of woven composite geotextiles as the excellent reinforcing material.

  • Domestic practices in shotcrete use have developed in many respects even now, but it still has issues about material, construction, quality standard and so on. In overseas, the construction using high strength shotcrete with $39.2{\sim}58.8 MPa$ of compressive strength is becoming common based on the shotcrete technology of high strength and durability. However, domestic shotcrete design strength is low at around 20.6 MPa of compressive strength and a long term durability is also insufficient. In this paper, field tests using high-quality additives and accelerators were performed to obtain the improvement of shotcrete strength and EFNARC standard was used to evaluate the field test results. In addition, deterioration test combined with the freezing-thawing and carbonation was also performed in order to investigate a long-term durability of high-strength shotcrete. As a result of the field test, the promotion ratio of early strength was $90{\sim}97%$ in case of using alkali-free accelerators. And the compressive strength of the shotcrete using Micro-silica fume was $45.2{\sim}55.8MPa$ and flexible strength was $5.01{\sim}6.66MPa$, so the promotion ratio of strength was $37{\sim}79%$ and $17{\sim}61%$ respectively. The promotion effect of strength by silica fine additives ratio of $7.5{\sim}10%$ for cement mass was much superior to the other cases. It was especially examined that using Micro-silica fume reduced deterioration due to mixed steel fiber and improved a long-term durability of shotcrete.
