Changes of Growth and Quality of Creeping Bentgrass by Greywater Irrigation (중수돗물 관수에 따른 크리핑벤트그래스의 생육과 품질)

  • Water shortage is becoming a serious problem of turfgrass management on sand green. Many superintendents in golf course in Korea have interested in use of irrigation of recycled water for turfgrass water management. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of greywater as an irrigation source on the growth and quality of creeping bentgrass green. Turfgrass was irrigated with tap water (TW) and greywater (GW), under with or without compound fertilizer application (nonfertilizer + TW, N-TW; non-fertilizer + GW, N-GW; fertilizer + TW, F-TW; fertilizer + GW, F-GW). The chemical properties of the green sand soil were not changed by irrigation. Turf color index, chlorophyll index, root length, clipping yield and nutrient uptake of GW treatment were similar to TW treatment. The growth and quality of turfgrass were more likely related with the fertilizer application than irrigation source or quality. These results indicated that GW could be used as alternative irrigation source on the sand greens of golf courses.

Growth and Contents of Inorganic Nutrient during Cultivation of Zoysiagrass (한국잔디의 재배기간 중 생육과 무기성분 함량 변화)

  • This research will be utilized as a base line data by researching on growth and the accumulation of inorganic nutrients during the cultivation period of zoysiagrass and also to establish a cultivation strategy of zoysiagrass. It involves the management such as fertilizer and mowing which ultimately led to the difference of growth and accumulation of inorganic nutrients. The accumulation of inorganic nutrients after mowing, the amount of accumulation was small when compared to the amount lost for the shoot, rhizome and root. Difference in the accumulation of inorganic nutrients, but as for K, Ca and Mg accumulation it shows similar aspects to N accumulation. The orders of inorganic nutrients in zoysiagrass were N > K > P > Ca > Mg. The characteristics of inorganic nutrients absorption of such zoysiagrass acts as the foundation of cultivation, and in the aspect of making decisions on the fertilization amount and soil management, it is closely related to the requirement on nutrients. In order to increase the productivity based on the zoysiagrass's growth and density rate improvement, accumulation of inorganic nutrients per growth period needs to be analyzed, and supplying nutrients in an efficient method suitable to the growth period is advisable, so such basic research was necessary.

Differences in Root Growth Characteristics of Creeping Bentgrass and Kentucky Bluegrass Sod (크리핑 벤트그래스와 켄터키 블루그래스 뗏장의 뿌리생육 특성 차이)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of root growth in Kentucky bluegrass sod(KBS) and creeping bentgrass sod(BGS) transplanted in summer(August 9) and fall(September 19), respectively. Hydroponic system was also used to observe rooting development in the study. Root development differed in KBS by transplanting time. It reached to more than 5 cm after 100 days In summer and 50 days in fall. However, BGS's root grew over 6cm after 40 days, regardless of the season. There was no significant differences in BGS, regardless of any cutting treatment. In the case of KBS, it was best with sod culled with 0.5cm deep and 1.5cm long. But it grew beyond 5 cm in root growth under any treatment after 40 days in transplanting. In a hydroponic study, BGS produced root over 100cm for 80 days through a summer season. However, the root of KBS did only grow in condition below $20^{\circ}C$. These results indicated that root growth characteristics were variable in BGS and KBS. It was considered that rooting development of BGS might be improved with sufficient irrigation in summer, and KBS grows well in lower temperature of $10{\sim}18^{\circ}C$, as compared with BGS. As to establishing the lawn with a sodding method, it should be careful in transplanting time, especially KBS.

The Effect of SCB(Slurry Compost ion and Biofilter) Liquid Fertilizer on Growth of Creeping Bentgrasss (저농도 SCB액비의 시용이 크리핑벤트그래스의 생육에 미치는 영향)

  • In regional nutrient quota system, livestock manure was applied as liquid fertilizer after slurry composting and biofiltration (SCB) process. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of SCB liquid fertilizer on turfgrass growth in golf course during 6 month period from May to October in 2008. Fertilizer treatment was designed as follows; non-fertilizer (NF), control (CF; compound fertilizer), S-1 (1L SCB${\cdot}m^{-2}$) and S-2 (2L SCB${\cdot}m^{-2}$). Every treatment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. In creeping bentgrass, turf color index, chlorophyll content, and dry weight were measured. Results were as follows; A seasonal change pattern of turf grass quality in all treatment increased in April $\sim$ June and September $\sim$ October, whereas it decreased in July $\sim$ August. As compared with NF, turf color index of CF, S-1 and S-2 increased by 1.8%, 1.8%, and 3.3%, respectively and chlorophyll content by 13%, 14%, and 20%, respectively. Dry weight of CF, S-1, and S-2 was higher than that of NFl by 7.7%, 18.2%, and 18.1%, respectively. For turf color index, chlorophyll content, and dry weigh, S-2 showed the best effect, followed by S-1 and CF in creeping bentgrass. These results indicated that the SCB application improves turf growth and quality.

Influence of Paper Mill Sludge and Briquet Ash on the Growth of Zoysiagrass (제지(製紙)슬러지와 연탄재가 들잔디의 생육(生育)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • To investigate the potential of paper mill sludge and briquet ash as cultural media in turfgrass, zoysiagrass was grown in the mixtures prepared with paper mill sludge and briquet ash. The mixtures were consisted of sludge and briquet ash in the ratio by volume 3:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 in the order. To compare the growth responses, some plants were grown in the medium containing sand(3), field soil(1) and peatmoss (1) by volume anti regarded as control. 1. Activated sludge mixed with sand increased plant height, fresh weight, and dry weight more than 1.5-2.0 times compared to those of the control. The highest plant growth was shown in mixtures containing 67% activated sludge. 2. Plant density per $100cm^2$ and chlorophyll content were higher in all mixtures containing activated sludge than control. 3. The growth of zoysiagrass was reduced along with the increase of non-activated sludge ratio, but no difference was found in chlorophyll content. 4. Plant height, fresh weight and dry weight were greater in activated sludge combined with sand compared to the briquet ash mixtures, but the difference of shoot density between two mixtures was not shown. 5. Even though non-activated sludge appeared not to be appropriate to the growth of seedlings, the number of tillers of plant propagated with rhizome was more increased compared to control when briquet ash content was less than 75%.

Growth and Quality Changes of Creeping Bentgrass by Application of Keratin Amino Acid Fertilizer (케라틴 아미노산 비료 시비에 따른 크리핑 벤트그래스의 생육과 품질 변화)

  • Amino acids in the plant were intermediate metabolites which produced by uptake and assimilation of nitrogen and these extracts which gained by bio-chemical digestion from protein of plant or animal were a source of functional fertilizer. This study was conducted to evaluate effects of keratin amino acid fertilizer (KAF) gained from animal hair or hoof on changes of turfgrass quality and growth by investigating turf color index, chlorophyll index, shoot number, clipping yield, and nutrient content in the turfgrass tissue. Treatments were designed as follows; non-fertilizer (NF), compound fertilizer (CF), keratin amino acid fertilizer treatments [CF + KAF $0.26ml\;m^{-2}$ (CKF), CF + KAF $0.52ml\;m^{-2}$ (2CKF)], and only keratin amino acid fertilizer treatment (KF). Shoot number, clipping yield, and nitrogen uptake of KF were higher than those of CF. As compared with CF, soil chemical properties, turf color index, chlorophyll index and clipping yield of keratin amino acid fertilizer were not significant, but shoot number and uptake of N and K were increased significantly. These results show that the application of keratin amino acid fertilizer increased shoot number and growth by increased uptake of nitrogen and potassium.

A Newly Recorded Turfgrass Pest, Root-knot Nematode, Meloidogyne incognita, in Korean Golf Courses (골프장의 신 해충, 고구마뿌리혹선충의 발견)

  • 우리나라 골프장의 잔디 가해 해충과 천적을 조사하던 중 농림작물의 중요해충인 고구마뿌리혹선충을 Zoysia잔디에서 발견하였다. 고구마뿌리혹선충에 감염된 잔디는 새 뿌리가 발육하지 못하고 뭉툭하게 되어 황화현상과 함께 전반적으로 생육이 부진하였다. 감염된 잔디의 종은 들잔디(Zoyais japonica)와 금잔디(Zoysia matrella), 버뮤다글라스(Cynodon sp.)였다. 그리고 Z. japonica는 고구마뿌리혹선충의 새로운 기주로 기록된다. 조사 골프장의 대부분이 정도의 차이는 있었지만 피해를 받고 있었다. 잔디에서 뿌리혹선충이 기록되기는 우리나라에서는 처음이다.

The Effect of Compound Fertilizer Contained Slow Release Nitrogen on Turfgrass Growth in Kentucky bluegrasss and on Nitrogen Change in Root Zone (완효성질소성분이 함유된 복합비료의 시비가 토양 중 질소함량 변화 및 켄터키블루그래스 생육에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of compound fertilizer contained slow release nitrogen such as isobutylidene diurea(IBDU) and methylene urea(MU) on kentucky bluegrasss and the change of nitrogen in the root zone after supplying these at AM turfgrass research institute with soil analysis, chlorophyll content index, leaf area index and dry weight during 6 months from July to December in 2007 year. Fertilizer treatments were designed as following; non-fertilizer(NF), straight fertilizer(CF), methylene urea(MU), isobutylidene diurea(IBDU). The every treatments were arranged a randomized complete block with three replications. Results obtained were summarized as follows: As relative to time after N fertilizers application, ammonium and nitrate in soil were increased, but T-N was decrease. The change of ratio of available Nand T-N by elapsed time after fertilizing was decreased in CF from 30days but increased until 45days. Compared with NF, the turf color index in CF, MU and IBDU was increased 1.5%, 2.5% and 2.3%, respectively, the chlorophyll content 16%, 25% and 26%, the dry weight 31%, 62% and 46% and shoot number 104%, 185% and 148%. The chlorophyll content index of MU and IBDU was increased 7.5% and 8.8% than that of CF, shoot number 40% and 22%, and dry weight 24% and 12% but turf color index was similar to that of CF. These results showed that the MU and IBDU application was supplied nitrogen for a long time in root zone by increasing an available nitrogen, and so promote turf grass growth such as chlorophyll content and shoot number in kentucky bluegrass.
