  • Explicit & implicit self-esteems were measured with 132(23 elementary & 109 middle school students) gifted & 282(29 elementary & 253 middle school students) ordinary students. Additional measures on psychosomatic symptoms & aggression were obtained with gifted students. Gifted boys reported higher ESE on most of subscales except the athletic self-esteem. However there was no difference in ISE between two groups. Self esteem types significantly predicted psychosomatic symptoms & aggression in the gifted. Especially the discrepancy between ESE & ISE was the most important predictor for both internalized & externalized behavior problems. The behavior problem ratings were higher in the self-esteem discrepant groups compared to the congruent groups. This study showed that the congruency between ESE & ISE is important from childhood and later studies need to find intervention strategies against the self-esteem discrepancy.

  • The aim of the present study was to examine moderating effects of self-esteem on perceived transgression wrongness and forgiveness defined as Worthington and Scherer's (2004) emotional forgiveness and decisional forgiveness when receiving apologies. Data collected from 861(486 males, 375 females) Korean college students were analyzed with hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The results were as follows. First, on emotional forgiveness, the two-way interaction effect of perceived transgression wrongness and explicit self-esteem was significant. And on decisional forgiveness, the two-way interaction effect of perceived transgression wrongness and explicit self-esteem was significant. The effect of perceived transgression wrongness on emotional and decisional forgiveness for individuals with high explicit self-esteem is stronger than its impact for individuals with low self-esteem. These findings show that explicit self-esteem may play an important role in forgiveness in college students through interactions with perceived transgression wrongness. Second, on emotional forgiveness, the three-way interaction effect of perceived transgression wrongness, explicit self-esteem, and implicit self-esteem was significant. The effect of perceived transgression wrongness on emotional forgiveness for individuals with high explicit self-esteem having high implicit self-esteem is stronger than its impact for individuals with low explicit self-esteem having high implicit self-esteem. These findings show that discrepancies between implicit and explicit self-esteem are detrimental to emotional forgiveness. But, on decisional forgiveness, the three-way interaction effect of perceived transgression wrongness, explicit self-esteem, and implicit self-esteem was not significant. Implications and limitations of this study were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine whether self-differentiation mediates the relationship between adolescents' family functioning and self-esteem and to examine whether peer support and family conflicts had moderated mediating effects. For this purpose, 522 students from four high schools in Gyeonggi province were surveyed about their family functioning, self-differentiation, self-esteem, and peer support. The results were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 and PROCESS. The mediating, modulating, and moderated mediating effects were analyzed. The results of this study were as follows. First, correlation analysis showed that family functioning, self-differentiation, self-esteem, and peer support were significantly positively correlated. Second, the moderated mediating effects of peer support were as follows. First, self-differentiation had a partial mediating effect in the relationship between family functioning and self-esteem such that family functioning and self-differentiation were positively correlated and self-differentiation and self-esteem were positively correlated. Second, peer support had a moderating effect in the relationship between family functioning and self-differentiation that promoted self-differentiation. Thus, peer support affected family functioning and self-differentiation. Third, verifying the moderated mediating model of peer support by combining the mediation model of self-differentiation and the moderation model of peer support identified above showed that self-differentiation mediated the relationship between family functioning and self-esteem. Thus, family support affected self-differentiation and self-differentiation affected self-esteem. The significance of this study was as follows. First, it showed that self-differentiation significantly mediated the relationship between family functioning and self-esteem, clarifying the relationship between family functioning and self-esteem. Second, it showed that peer support moderated the relationship between family functioning and self-differentiation, identifying a mechanism that promotes self-differentiation. Third, it showed the mediation of self-differentiation of the relationship between family functioning and self-esteem depended on peer support.

  • Loss experience can bring more negative impact to the person, if experienced in a younger period. This study examined how self-esteem mediates the effect of emotional expression and maladaptive emotion regulation strategies regarding one's loss during adolescence among college students on depression. The data of 380 college students entails what kind of loss was experienced, how the level of self-esteem mediated the effect of emotional expression and maladaptive emotion regulation strategy after loss experience on depression; and it was analyzed with SPSS 21.0 and Amos 21.0. The results showed that emotional expression about loss experiences was negatively correlated with depression (${\beta}=-.180$, p<.01), and maladaptive emotion regulation strategies showed a positive correlation with depression (${\beta}=.266$, p<.001). The emotional expression of loss experiences decreased the level of depression by increasing the level of self - esteem, and maladaptive emotion regulation strategy of loss experience increased depression level by lowering self-esteem level. Therefore, it is conceivable to assume that the more people articulate on various emotional experiences after their loss and think positively about themselves, and the less they criticize for themselves, the less likely they are to experience depression while maintaining high self-esteem.
