A Methodology for Evaluating Cycling Safety and Mobility using Probe Bicycle Sensor Data (프로브 자전거 센서자료를 이용한 자전거 주행안전성 및 이동성 통합평가기법 개발)

  • Bicycle is an environment-friendly transport mode contributing to a more sustainable transportation systems. To innovatively increase the use of bicycle as a significant transport mode, bicycle-friendly roadway environment should be provided. This study proposes a method to evaluate cycling environment based on the analysis of data collected from an specially equipped probe bicycle. The inertial measurement unit(IMU) consisting of a gyro sensor, accelerometer, and a global positioning systems(GPS) receiver was installed on the probe bicycle. Cycling stability index(CSI) and bicycle speed data were used as inputs of the proposed evaluation framework adopting the Fault Tree Analysis, which is a well-known technique for the risk analysis. The outcomes of this study will serve as an intelligent assesment tool for cycling environment.

  • 자전거 운전은 본질적인 불안정한 시스템으로 자전거의 안전한 운전을 위해서는 지속적인 운전자의 상호작용으로 인하여 자전거의 안전성을 확보할 수 있다. 그것은 자전거의 운전이 운전자의 운동과 매우 밀접한 연관이 있다는 것을 알 수 있으며, 현재 자전거의 특성뿐 아니라 운전자의 운전에 대한 연구가 진행되고 있지만 정확한 자전거의 주행 안정성에 대하여 연구는 계속적으로 진행되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 자전거 운전자의 몸무게와 신장과 같은 사람의 인체 정보를 이용하여 적절한 안장 높이와 자전거 바퀴 사이의 거리 및 핸들의 높이를 조절할 수 있는 맞춤형 자전거 관리 시스템을 제시하고자 한다. 또한, 운전자 맞춤형 자전거의 설계는 실제 자전거 운전데이터와 영상데이터를 이용하여 적합한 자전거 모델을 제시하고 추출된 데이터를 통하여 분석된 결과를 제시하고자 한다.

  • 본 연구는 GIS기법, GPS기법을 이용하여 천안시 내의 자전거도로 최적노선을 선정하고 문제점 제안에 관한 것이다. 연구에서 자전거도로 최적노선을 위한 물리적, 사회적, 환경적 등 다양한 측면의 조건과 제안 요소들을 복합적으로 분석하여 문제점을 제시하고 GIS, GPS기법을 이용해 데이터값을 표출하여 해당 지역을 비교 분석하였다. 연구결과 편의성, 안전성, 접근성을 고려한 자전거도로의 노선을 제안하였으며천안시 자전거도로의 안전성을 높이고 효율적인 자전거 이용 환경을 구축할 수 있을 것을 기대한다.

Development and Application of Evaluation Indicators of Bike Environment by Land Use in Suwon (수원시 자전거 이용환경 평가지표 개발 및 토지이용별 적용방안 연구)

  • In this study, an evaluation index was developed and applied to derive indicators related to the environment for bicycle use and to evaluate the environment for bicycle use in the city of Suwon. Analysis showed that the relative importance between the assessment factors was highest in bicycle safety and that the relative importance among the assessment indicators was highest in terms of priority of items directly affecting bike riding, and items with indirect influence were low in importance. As a result of applying the evaluation model to bike paths in Suwon, it was confirmed that they can be described in a relatively realistic manner. The findings are expected to contribute to the development of local government directives for improving the environment of cycle paths.

Bikeway Vitalization Countermeasures Using Bikeway User Satisfaction Model (자전거도로 이용자 만족도 모형을 통한 자전거도로 활성화 대책)

  • There are many efforts for expanding bikeway plans and increasing bike utilization. In this study the authors try to find the primary factors that affect bike users' satisfaction under limited budgets. As satisfaction is a qualitative variable, the authors developed a bike user satisfaction model by using structural equation methods. The bikeways are distinguished between bike lanes on public roads and exclusive bikeways along the Han River, as the characteristics and attributes should be different. The model shows bikeways on public road have a user satisfaction equal to 0.248*(safety)+0.405(accessibility). Bikeways along the Han River have a user satisfaction equal to 0.437*(accessibility)+0.405*(economic feasibility). In both types, accessibility affects satisfaction. Safety in more important to users on public roads, while economic feasibility affects those on the Han River bikeways.

Development of bicycle device to strengthen safety (안전 강화를 위한 자전거 장치 개발)

  • With the growing number of people using bicycle, the number of bicycle accidents also has been increasing. It is said that bicycle accident can be reduced up to 11%~44% when riding a bicycle if LED light is used. The headlight of the bicycle makes exposure effect to the opposite side of bike rider while taillight makes exposure effect to the rear bike rider for improving safety. Bicycle safety device capable of displaying a change of direction by LED is implemented in this study in response to control button signal. This signal makes LED light which is installed in pedal and wheel of bicycle as a module type emitting or flickering during the fixed hour. Bicycle auxiliary device in pedal which is able to improve safety using LED when bikers are riding a bike at night is developed in this study. Bicycle safety device applying wireless communication technology will be expected alternative technology in the future to solve a social problem such as energy, environment, and safety.

  • The South Korean government is looking for a solution to the ever-growing problems of traffic congestion, and surging international oil prices: the use of the humble bicycle to get to places. However, Many people feel inconvenient using bicycle because of the insufficient bicycle infrastructure and lack of the safety and connectivity between existing pathways. In this study, bicycle level of service model using ordered probit model is developed considering safety, convenience, connectivity, and factors that affect bicycle LOS. The ordered probit model would be recommended for the research which relates in choice, preference and strength etc. Bicycle level of service criteria is calculated by applying this model reflecting bicyclist's point of view. The model which develops from this research which accomplishes a bicycle level of service evaluation and represent alternative solution to encourage bicyclist. It is believed that the proposed model would be greatly utilized in bicycle network planning, bicycle road and facility alternatives testing, projects funding priority.

  • The bicycle is an environment-friendly transport mode leading to a more sustainable transportation system. To innovatively increase the use of bicycle as a significant transport mode, bicycling-friendly roadway environment should be provided. From this perspective, the scientific and effective assessment of roadway environment in term of the bicyclist perception for safety and comfortability is of keen interest. This study develops a methodology for evaluation cycling environment using probe bicycles. A global positioning system(GPS) based speedometer was used to collect bicycle speed data. Cycling comfortability index(CCI) was derived for the purpose of evaluating cycling environment. The proposed CCI can be effectively used as an assessment tool in the field of bicycle transportation.

A Preliminary Study on Intersection Geometric Designs Considering Safety of Crossing Bicycle - Focusing on Curve Radius of Pavement Edge at Intersection (횡단자전거의 안전성을 고려한 교차로 기하구조에 관한 기초연구 - 교차로 가각부 곡선반경을 중심으로)

  • Recently there have been an increasing amount of bicycle accidents along with the increased usage of bicycles. Bicycle accidents occur frequently by perpendicular collision at the inner intersection. Bicycle traffic is especially concentrated in residential areas and around schools which results in the vulnerability of cyclists. This paper is to inform the potential risks of collisions between bicycles and cars turning right at the intersections using simulation analysis which focuses on the pavement edge of intersection geometric designs factor and checks on the drivers behavior. The result of the analysis shows that as the curve radius of pavement edge at the intersection becomes larger and the more attention drivers are paying to the rear by turning their heads to the right, the potential risk of collisions between bicycles and cars turning right will decrease.

Developing Bike Road Design Alternatives Considering Land Use Characteristics (토지이용을 고려한 자전거도로 설계대안의 개발)

  • The Korean government recently has focused on variety of policies to promote the use of bikes to control the emission of carbon. However, bike facilities with no regard to the safety and comfort of bike drivers has made inefficient bike roads. Also, the accidents related to bikes have increased rapidly. This study proposes the proper types of the bike roads considering land use and bike driver characteristics. The elements classifying the bike driver characteristics are driven through oneway ANOVA and cluster analysis. It is found that the types of the bike roads can be classified by the ratio of child and elderly bikers and the ratio of heavy trucks. Also, the each type is characterized by the land use types such ad residential, commercial and industrial areas through cluster analysis. According to the results of the cluster analysis, installation of bike roads in residential area needs to consider convenience and safety simultaneously. It is also found that convenience should be the most considerable factor in commercial area. Lastly, safety should be considered in industrial area. Recommended methodology and bike road type based on the land use and bike driver's characteristics can be useful to develop bike-friendly environments and increase mode share of bikes.
