The biological activities of twelve different kinds of enzymatic browning reaction products(EBRP), which resulted from the reactants four kinds of polyphenols with polyphenol oxidase extracted from Ligularia fischeri, pimpinella brachycarpa and Aster scaber of edible mountain herbs. All of twelve samples did not show any mutagenic effect in the spore rec-assay, Ames mutagenicity test and DNA breaking test. However metal ions such as $Cu^{2+},\;Fe^{2+}$, and $Ni^{2+}$ were increased the DNA breakage in rec-assay. The EBRPs inhibited the mutagenicities induced by $benzo({\alpha})pyrene (B({\alpha})P)$, 3-amino-1,4-dimethyl-5H-pyrido-[4,3-b]indole(Trp-P-1) and 2-aminofluorene(2-AF) in Salmonella/microsome assay system with S-9 mix. In effects of EBRPs on the DNA repair system, the activity of EcoRI was highly inhibited and that of $T_{4}$ DNA ligase was inactivated by addition of EBRPs. The results of transformation ratio of plasmid pGA658 into E. coli HB 101 was significantly decreased by the reaction products of S. brachycarpa polyphenoloxidase (PPO). When UV light was exposed to the mixture of DNA and EBRP before the thanformation, the reaction products from L. fischeri PPO with pyrogallol, catechol and hydroxyhydroquinone stimulated transformation ratio.
In order to developed the techniques for artificial seedling production of geoduck clam, Panope japonica, various stimulution for spawning induction and hatching condition were studied. Spawning induction by the air day or UV-irradiation stimulus were not effective. Water temperature stimulus was responsed 15.0~25.0% in May and 10.0% in June. But spawning induction by the gonad incision was highest with 15.0~45.0%. Ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) stimulus adding in seawater were responsed 15.0% at 8/1000N~10/1000N, and ammonium hyhroxide solution injected in the gonads were responsed 5.0~10.0% at 5/100N~7/100N. The highest fertilization and hatching rate at various water temperature were ranged 74.5~89.2% in 11~$17^{\circ}C, \;84.3~89.5%\;in\;8~14^{\circ}C$, respectively. the highest fertilization rate and hatching rate in various salinity were ranged 72.5~88.5% in 25~$35tetperthousand$, 82.7~86.9% in 30~$35tetperthousand$, respectively. The optimum water temperature and salinity for fertilization and hatching to the 11~14$^{\circ}C$ and 30~$35tetperthousand$, respectively.

Although many studies have been performed to elucidate the molecular consequence of factors that regulate skin aging, little is known about the effect of green tea catechins except EGCG. The matrix metalloproteinase (MMP), can degrade matrix proteins and results in a collagen deficiency in photodamaged skin, are known to play an important role in photoaging. This study, investigated the effects of green tea catechins on the UVA-induced MMP-1 expression, activity of MMP-2 and synthesis of type I procollagen in human dermal fibroblasts. We examined eight catechins that naturally exist in green tea leaves and compared their efficacies among them. Most of catechins inhibited the expression of MMP-1 in dose dependent manner, and the levels were reduced, especially, 57.4 and 68.2% by treatment with $1{\mu}M$ of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and gallocatechin-3-gallate (GCG), respectively. Also, catechins significantly suppressed the activities of MMP-2. Catechins also induced the expression of type I procollagen, however, they acted only at the concentration below $1{\mu}M$ interestingly. Furthermore, when EGCG:GCG:ECG had the ratio of 0.5:1.5:.1.3, they presented the most effective on procollagen synthesis. Therefore, we concluded that catechins significantly inhibited MMPs and induced collagen synthesis. Taken together, all these results suggested that green tea catechins might be good natural materials act as an anti-photoaging and a skin-aging improving agent.

Estrogen deficiency results in a reduction of skin quality and function in postmenopausal women. Over the past decade, many studies have supported that estrogen provides anti-aging effects as a result of the ability of estrogen to prevent skin collagen decline, restore skin elasticity, and increase skin hydration in postmenopausal women skin. Due to their structural similarity with estrogen, isoflavones have been called phytoestrogens. Photoprotective effects of isoflavones are well established while their estrogenic-like activities are not fully understood in human skin. In this study, we investigated whether daidzein, an effective isoflavone, has phytoestrogenic activity and induces transcriptional change of extracellular matrix components in dermal fibroblasts. We examined the luciferase activity of daidzein and ${\beta}$-estradiol using transiently transfected NIH3T3-ERE cells. The estrogenic receptor-dependent transcriptional activity was increased in a dose-dependent manner when treated with daidzein, with a maximum of 2.5-fold induction at $10{\mu}g/mL$ of daidzein compared with non-treated control. In addition, daidzein significantly in creased the expressions of collagen type I, collagen type IV, elastin, and fibrillin-1 in human dermal fibroblasts. By comparing with the effects of ${\beta}$-estradiol through out all the experiments, we confirmed that daidzein had estrogenic activity and function in fibroblasts. These results suggest that daidzein-based application, having both photoprotective and phytoestrogenic effects, may be a powerful approach for skin anti-aging of postmenopausal women.
The mechanism for electrochemical oxidation of natural alkaloid, ${\iota}$-sparteine (SP) was studied in acetonitrile solvent. The cyclic voltammogram of SP shows two irreversible anodic peaks at +0.75 V and +1.45 V vs. Ag/AgCl (0.1M AgNO$_2$ in acetonitrile) electrode. Coulometry reveals that the number of electrons involved in each oxidation peaks is in the range of 1.2∼1.3 respectively. Neutral imine radical was produced by fast deprotonation of SP radical cation formed by oxidation of one nitrogen atom in SP. Two pathways are possible for the reaction of the neutral radical: Due to the disproportionation of the radical, SP and enamine were mainly produced. Also, the 1,2-dehydrosparteinium cation was formed as minor product through the second one electron transfer oxidation of this radical. The (+)-lupanine was produced by treatment of sparteinium cation with potassium hydroxide. We have isolated and confirmed the electrolysis products using IR, GC-MS, UV-Vis, and thin-layer spectroelectrochemical method.
Three types of epoxy resins (Epo-Tek 301, Araldite 103, and Araldite 106) and three types of pigments (bunche, pastel, and conté), which are materials for porcelain restoration, were selected as examination materials. The tone change, porosity, and sedimental resulting from the mixtures of varying ratios of these three materials were observed. Samples were also made from the mixture of Epo-teck 301, four kinds of white pigments, and six types of fillers and subjected to ultraviolet ray penetration for 200 hours to observe the oxidation of the epoxy resins. The result showed that the chemical composition of pastel drastically changed when mixed with Epo-tek 301. Although bunche and conté displayed clear colors, those of conté were less clear when it was mixed with other substances. Adding a small amount of Epo-tek 301 tended to be driven into the corner, whereas mixing a large amount caused saturation and boiling. On the other hand, AW 106 did not display clear colors owing to its high viscosity; when mixed in large amounts, however, the clarity of colors improved. For AY 103, a similar standard of color clarity was maintained regardless of the mixture ratio. The following was ranked according to the level of porosity: [Pastel>bunche≒conté]. In terms of sedimentary, however, [bunche>conté>Pastel], [Epo-tek 301> AY 103> AW 106]. The result of measuring the degree of yellowing revealed that titanium, pastel, silicon dioxide, and kaolin tended to turn yellow, whereas bunche, conté, diatomaceous earth, and calcium hydroxide tended to resist yellowing.

The effect of Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang (BZYQT) on the changes of ultraviolet (UV) light B radiation-induced apoptotic sunburn cell (SBC) and epidermal ATPase-positive dendritic cell (DC) in SKH1- hr or ICR mouse were investigated. The mice were treated with UVB (200 mJ/$cm^2$) and were sacrificed 24 h later. BZYQT (50 mg/kg of body weight) or vehicle (saline) was given i.p. at 36 and 12 h before irradiation, and 30 min after irradiation or BZYQT cream (0.2%) or cream base (vehicle) was topically treated at 24 h and 15 min before irradiation, and immediately after irradiation. The skin of SKH1-hr mouse prepared from the back of untreated mice exhibited about 0.3 SBC/cm length of epidermis, and 24 h after UV irradiation, the applied areas show an increased number of SBCs. But the frequency of UVB-induced SBC formation was reduced by intraperitoneal injection of BZYQT extract (p < 0.01). The numbers of DC in normal ICR mouse were 628.00 ${\pm}$ 51.56 or 663.20 ${\pm}$ 62.58 per $mm^2$ of ear epidermis. By 1 day after UVB treatment, the number of ATPase-positive cells/$mm^2$ were decreased by 39.0% or 27.1% in i.p. or topical application group with vehicle. Treatment of BZYQT was associated with increase of 33.9% in i.p. group (p < 0.05) or 2.7% in topical application group in the number of ATPase positive cells compared with the irradiation control group. The results presented herein that BZYQT administration could reduce the extent of skin damages produced by UVB.

A radiative transfer model with two-stream/delta-Eddington approximation has been developed to calculate the vertical distributions of atmospheric heating rates and radiative fluxes. The performance of the model has been evaluated by comparison with the results of ICRCCM (Intercomparison of radiative codes in climate models). It has been demonstrated that the presented model has a capability to calculate the solar radiation not only accurately but also economically. The characteristics of ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B; 280-320nm) are examined by comparison of relation between the flux at the top of atmosphere and that at the surface. The relation of UV-B is quadratic due to the strong ozone absorption in this band. Also, the dependence of the UV-B radiation on the stratospheric ozone depletion and stratospheric aerosol haze due to volcanic eruption on the stratospheric ozone depletion and stratospheric aerosol haze due to volcanic eruption has been tested with various solar zenith angles. The surface UV-B increases as the solar zenith angle increases. The existence of stratospheric aerosols causes an increase in the planetary albedo due to the aerosols' backscattering. The planetary albedo with aerosol's effect has been increases as the solar zenith angle is not sensitive. It may be caused by the fact that the aerosols' scattering effect becomes saturated with the relatively long path length in a large solar zenith angle. Finally, the regional impact of stratospheric aerosols due to volcanic eruption on the intensity of UV-B radiation at the surface has been estimated. A direct effect is that the flux is diminished at the low latitudes, while it is enhanced in the high latitudes by the aerosols' photon trap or twilight effect. In the high latitudes, both aerosols' scattering and ozone absorption have strong and opposite impacts to the surface UV-B radiation is located at the mid-latitudes during spring season in both hemispheres.

The authenticity of a document is recognized only when sealing on the document can be recognized to be the same as the original seal of a person who drew up the document. But forge in various ways is prevalent; forge through stamp-copy, forge through photocopying, forge through computer seal sculpture machine, forge through photosensitive resin, etc. Among the methods above, a method of making a forged seal with photosensitive resin panels, which is one of the easiest forging methods, enables making a forged seal the same as the original seal through the work of projecting ultraviolet rays on a resin panel on which negative film is stuck after making it using the original seal. But as research into this reality has not been sufficiently carried on, it is difficult to identify forged sealing through photosensitive resin seals, indeed. For this reason, unless regulations about making forged seals using resin machine for print are enforced, crimes related to forged seals using photosensitive resin are expected to increase in the future. Thus, after stamping 10 resin seals made based on an original seal carved of thick and thin strokes of characters, this paper intends to clarify that there are differences between original sealing and forged sealing through sealing identification method. Consequently, we verified the significant difference in the statistics between original sealing and forged sealing.

This paper reports the fabrication of geometry-controlled carbon microneedles by a backside exposure method and pyrolysis. The SU-8 microneedles are a polymer precursor in a carbonization process, which geometries such as base diameter, spacing, and aspect ratio can be controlled in a photolithography step. Using this fabrication method, highly reproducible carbon microneedles, which have high aspect ratios of more than 10 and very sharp nanotips, can be realized. The quartz surface with carbon microneedles becomes very hydrophilic and its wettability is adjusted by carrying out the silane treatment. In the carbon microneedle array ($3\;{\mu}m{\times}3\;{\mu}m$), the contact angle is extremly enhanced (${\sim}180^{\circ}$); this will be advantageous in developing low-drag microfluidics and labs-on-a-chip as well as in other bio-applications.
