A mycological survey was carried out with the soil samples collected in Korea from Sptember, 1978 to December, 1979. Special attention was paid fungus genus Penicillum. One hundred twenty three isolates, as a result, were obtained from the Korean soils. Among these, sixteen species were iedentified and described in this paper. Almost all of the fungi reported here are new to Korea. One of them is an asomycete cleisothecia of $120~50\mu$ in diameter. Ascospores of this fungus were found lenticular with an equatorial furrow as indicated in the previous descriptions.

The Sporulation of Didymella bryomiae were observed under diurnal cycles of light/darkness of near ultraviolet light (NUV) and artificial daylight (ADL) and continous darkness in eight isolates growing on PDA and V-8 juice agar. Light stimulated pycindial and perithecial formation of this fungus on potato dextrose agar and V-8 juice agar. Sprulation was poor in darkness, but some isolates were able to produce pycnidia and perithecia in the absence of light. Perithecial formation was much better under artificial daylight (ADL) on V-8 juice agar than those grown under near ultraviolet light (NUV). In general, cultures grown on V-8 juice agar sporulated better than cultures grown on PDA under three setsof light condition. Most of the pycnidiospores obtained from each isolates of this fungus grown on PDA were non-septate and microtype, but macrotype of non-septate and uniseptate pycnidiospores were produced on V-8 juice agar. Pycnidiospore produced on V-8 juice agar were similar to those produced on the radicle of naturally infected seeds. The appearance of perithecia were quite distinctive from pycnidia. The mature perithecia were darker than pycnidia and whitish spore masses formed on the ostiole of perithecia.

The volcanic rocks around the Jayang caldera are classified in an order such as Jukjang Volcanics, Doil Rhyolite, Unjusan Tuff and Rhyolite intrusions. By the SHRIMP U-Pb zircon datings from zircons, eruption ages of the Unjusan Tuff are constrained as 66.65±0.96 Ma in the intracaldera, and 66.08±0.62 Ma in the extracaldera outflow, and intrusion age of the ring dike is investigated as 60.74±0.66 Ma. The age data indicate that the caldera was collapsed between 66.08 Ma and 60.74 Ma, just before the dike intruded after the explosive eruption of the Unjusan Tuff. The Jayang caldera shows the composite igneous process of a perfect volcanic cycle passing from ash-flow tuffs through caldera collapse into ring dikes in the Jayang area.

Compiled in 776 by Zhang Shen, Wu Jing Wen Zi was regarded as the epitome of model book for standardized regular script in Tang Dynasty. Following early works like Shuo Wen Jie Zi, Zhang Shen adopted radical-rule for the compilation of this work. 3,250 characters were selected from the Five Classics and 160 radicals were established. Yu Jiaxi (1884-1955) harshly criticized the radical system of Wu Jing Wen Zi for being inconsistant and confusing. With careful review and analysis of examples from Wu Jing Wen Zi, this paper discusses the pupose of the compilation of this work, its unique radical-rule system, principles of arrangement of characters with the same or similar radicals, and the differentiation of variant characters. It further discusses the value of Wu Jing Wen Zi by its innovative radical-rule and effective differentiation of variant characters. It concludes with a rebuttal of Yu Jiaxi's argument and restate the necessity of reevaluation of this work even to this day.

Objectives : In this study, it was investigated the anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antioxidant effects of Jayangdaebo-tang (JDT) consisting of twelve herbs before and after fermentation. Methods : JDT extract was fermented using the Lactoplantibacillus plantanum (JDT-L), Bacillus subtilis (JDT-B), and L. plantanum plus B. subtilis (JDT-L+B). The effects of each extract were measured in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, MCF-7 breast cancer and A549 lung cancer cells, and H₂O₂-stimulated HepG2 cells. Results : The extracts of JDT-L, JDT-B and JDT-L+B at 1 ㎎/㎖ decreased significantly the levels of nitric oxide (NO) in LPS-treated RAW264.7 cells and also inhibited the expression of iNOS and COX-2, and the phosphorylation of ERK and NF-κB. The JDT-L+B extract decreased significantly the expression of apoptotic proteins, Bax, cleaved caspase-3, and PARP in MCF-7 and A549 cancer cells. The JDT-L, JDT-B and JDT-L+B extracts increased significantly the cell viability in H₂O₂-stimulated HepG2 cells and the JDT-L+B extract decreased significantly the expression of SOD, catalase, HO-1, and NRF-2. Among fermented JDT extracts, JDT-L+B was the best effective on response of macrophage inflammation, cancer cell apoptosis, and liver cell damage. Conclusions : Our results were suggested that the fermentation can be used as a useful way to enhance the biological activity of JDT.

Brown rot of eggplant caused by Phytophthora capsici has not been reported so far in Korea. The wide distribution of the disease was found at the central Korea including Suweon. The symptom of the disease was characterized by water sealing lesions at first, the color gradually turn brown and a little sunken area on the fruit appearred at the final stage. Dense hyphae and short sporangiophores grew out from the lesions, and they produce abundant zoosporangia on them. The disease was identified from buck-eye rot caused by Phytophthora parasitica in that the cottony growth of hyphae and rare zoosporangia formation. The pathogen was isolated and indentified on the basis of the pathogenecity and morphology comparing with P. parasitica.

Anatomical and physico-chemical properties of some nutrient and tonic crude drugs have been estimated and compared. Resin duct and druse crystal were observed more in Acanthopanax Cortex than in Ginseng Radix. Bast fiber bundle and solitary crystals were abandantly present in Glycyrrhizae Radix. Mucilage crude drugs contained mucilage ducts and bundles of raphides as common components and their arrangements of vascular bundles were different. TLC analysis showed different patterns of saponin, flavonoid, ${\gamma}-aminobutyric$ acid and sitosterols.

A growing interest in health has been leading to more interest in function of food rather than its taste and nutrition. Usually we think chemical-free or oriental food to be good for health. Yaksun is a food with herbal stuff, which reflects our desire for health and longevity and China's splendid food culture. It is based on the traditional medical thought of the Orient that both medicine and food have the same origin. Yaksun is a traditional functional or nourishing food with both nutritive and medicinal elements, which therefore provides such effects as epicurean pleasure, prevention of diseases and improvement of health. It is recorded that in China there was a dietitian in the royal court from the period of Seoju(B.C. 11∼7), who was responsible for supervising and controlling the health, nutrition and disease of an emperor. Therefore, herbal food has a very long history. Currently, there are many Yaksun stores in Japan and Taiwan as well as China, which are one of popular tourist destinations. Basically Yaksun follows the theory of the Oriental medicine. Yaksun is categorized into four(cold, cool, hot and warm) according to its temperature and into five basic tastes(bitter, sweet, pungent, salty and sour). Yaksun has the functions such as preventing diseases and aging improving internal organs, and healing diseases. In China many colleges of medicine have a department of Yaksun studies through which systematic researches have been being made since a long time ago. For Korea, the discipline of Yaksun studies is still at the beginning stage. To respond to a growing interest in health and prevent chronic adult diseases, it is required to develop a functional food by establishing a systematic theory of Yaksun and making more researches into it.

The purpose of this study was to observe the tissue response to the orthodontic force applied immediately after buccal horizontal subapical osteotomy of maxilla. Five mongrel cats weighing about 2.5 Kg were used for this experiment. The left upper canine and premolar of each cat served as a experimental side and the right ones as a control side. On the experimental side, a 100gm orthodontic force was applied between the upper canine and premolar immediately after the osteotomy. On the control side, the same orthodontic force was applied without the osteotomy. After 7days, the experimental animals were sacrificed. The results were as follows: 1. In the pressure zones of the experimental group, significant increase of osteoclasts and direct resolution along the alveolar bone surface was observed as compared with those of the control group. 2. In the pressure 2ones of the experimental group, a less extensive hyalinized zone was observed than those of the control group. 3. In the pressure zones of both group, no root resorption was found. 4. Tn the tension zones of the experimental group, new bone deposition increased along the alveolar bone surface as compared with those of the control group. In conclusion, the results suggest the possibility that early orthodontic treatment after orthognathic surgery may have some benefits if the stability of the repositioned segment at surgery is secured.
