  • This study aimed to analyse the effects of a self-regulation group counselling program on self-esteem and self-control in adolescents on probation. In respect to sub-areas of the effects the self-regulation group counselling program had on self-esteem in adolescents, there were statistically significant differences in general self-esteem, social self-esteem and family self-esteem. Also, there were statistically significant differences in all the areas including impulse control and emotional control as sub-areas of self-control. Such results experimentally showed that the self-regulation group counselling program had a significant effect on self-esteem and self-control in adolescents on probation. Therefore, it is expected that the probability of repeating their crimes will decrease greatly if the subjects have self-esteem and self-control enhanced through the group counselling program. It is suggested further studies on the self-regulation group counselling program and its practical use are needed to enhance self-esteem and self-control in adolescents on probation.

  • The purpose of this investigation was to examine the mediating effects of delinquent peers between attachment to parents, low self-control and adolescent deviant behaviors. After specifying a research model based on Gottfredson and Hirschi's general theory of crime and Hirschi's control theory of delinquency, the study analysed the model using structural equation modeling. The data for this investigation came from a sample of 2,448 Korean adolescents. The results showed the both measurement model and structural model had a good fit to the data and all paths of structural model were statistically significant. The main findings were the attachment to parents and low self-control had direct and indirect effects on adolescent deviant behaviors through delinquent peers. The implications for practical intervention and further research in the field of delinquency were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating effects of aggression and self-esteem on the relationship between perceived parental attachment and self-control of soldiers. A convenience sample of 507 soldiers was employed, the following conclusions obtained. Parent attachment was positively correlated with self-control, aggression was negatively correlated with self-control and self-esteem was positively correlated with self-control. On the other hand, parental attachment had a indirect influence on self-control which was mediates through aggression and self-esteem as well as direct influence on self-control, and the mediating effect was much further aggression than self-esteem. Based on the above mentioned result, implication for counseling practice and future research are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate pathways from family factors such as parental conflict, parenting behavior and adolescents' self-control to adolescent delinquency, and to explore the mediating effects of delinquent peers and school maladaptation. The 2004 Korea Youth Panel Survey data were used for analysis and the total number of subjects were 2,968 middle school students with two parents including step parents family. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling with AMOS 5 and SPSS 10. The major findings are summarized as follows. First, the effects of parental conflict on adolescent delinquency were mediated by parenting behavior, adolescents' self-control, delinquent peers and school maladaptation. Contrary to parental conflict, parenting behavior had a direct effect on adolescent delinquency as well as indirect effects. On the basis of these results, this article provided some suggestions for preventing or reducing adolescent delinquency.
