  • Objectives : Suicide is a global social problem. Social burden caused by suicide is gradually increasing. Various efforts have been made to prevent suicide. Lifestyle changes to western style, especially diet changes, have increased the risk for suicide. Therefore, in this study, we discussed diet as an adjuvant treatment for suicide. Methods : In this review, we summarized the biochemical mechanism of suicide, and diet as a risk factor for suicide and diet as a protective factor through a web search. Results : In this study, biochemical mechanisms for suicide were reviewed and diet as a risk factor and diet as a protective factor for suicide were investigated. It was confirmed that neurotoxic effects such as oxidative stress and inflammation in the neural system could increase the risk of suicide. Based on results of previous studies on the relationship between suicide and diet, it was found that heavy use of alcohol, coffee, carbonated soft drink, and fast food were risk factors for suicide. Protective factors for suicide included antioxidants such as vitamin C, carotene, and anti-inflammatory agents such as omega-3 fatty acids found in seafood in large amounts. Conclusions : The only treatment for suicide is prevention. In this context, effectiveness, accessibility, and safety are important for preventing for suicide. Antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents that are relatively safe and readily available to the public could be effective adjuvant treatments to decrease the risk of suicide. In addition, it is necessary to educate the public on reducing diets that could increase the risk of suicide

  • The aim of this study was to test the validity and reliability of the Suicide Resilience Inventory-Korean version. Data were collected from 266 university students in Jeonbuk, South Korea. The Suicide Resilience Inventory-Korean version Suicide Resilience Inventory-25 was developed, and the collected data were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis and Cronbach's alpha. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that The Suicide Resilience Inventory-Korean version(SRI-K) had factor loadings of the 19 items on the three subscales from 0.442 to 0.767. The three subscales model was validated by confirmatory factor analysis (RMSEA<.08, $CFI{\geq}.9$). The internal consistency with a Cronbach's alpha was reliable with a total scale of 0.943. These findings show that the SRI-K has satisfactory construct validity and reliability to measure the ability to effectively overcome and to flexibly cope with the suicide risk.

  • Introduction : Suicide in Korea has increased to 31.2 persons per 100,000 population, the world's highest level. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the world, but in Korea, it is 4th leading cause of death. Therefore suicide is a serious problem in Korea. Many suicide prevention strategies have been proposed. Despite efforts to prevent suicides in Korea, a steady increases in the number of suicides has been brought into question the effectiveness of suicide prevention activities in Korea. Methods : Strategy of restricting suicide methods in many countries was reviewed. Systematic approach to restrict suicidal methods in Korea is proposed. Results : Restricting suicide methods is one of the effective suicide prevention strategies employed in the UK and other countries. Since many suicides occur impulsively, suicide attempt lethality is an important factor in determining the rate of deaths in suicidal attempts. Physical restriction of suicide methods is important in preventing suicide, but restriction of cognitive access to information about suicide and suicide method is more important in preventing suicide. In particular hanging is one of the most common methods of suicides in Korea, it is crucial to develop strategies to prevent suicide by hanging cognitively. Also information about suicide should be properly controlled. To do this, suicide news reporting guidelines should be observed, and website makers whose websites provoke thoughts about suicide should be more strictly sanctioned. Conclusion : Restricting suicide methods along with other suicide prevention plans may be the most effective way to prevent suicide in Korea.

Depression which is a powerful predictor of suicide in elderly people, causes various psychological and social problems. In this study, we try to understand convergently about the adaptation experiences of the depressed elderly with suicidal ideation. Procedures and Methods: Seven elderly people with a GDS(Geriatric Depression Scale) score of ${\geq}17$ and a SSI(Scale for Suicidal Ideation) score of ${\geq}9$ in the self-help group were interviewed until theoretical saturation. Data were analyzed based on the Grounded theory method. Results and Contribution: Depressed elderly recognized the importance of being the center of their lives through interactions with peer groups and they started to embrace their lives. Further studies: Empirical studies on positive interactions with peer groups affecting the adjustment experience of depressed elderly should be expanded and continued.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze NSSI (Non-suicidal Self-Injury) and upcoming papers to review research achievements and endpoints and current problems. Analysis data necessary for the study were collected through the classification procedure as domestic suspension during the mandatory period related to self-harm from 2010 to the present. As a result of analysis according to classification categories (general characteristics, study subjects, research variables, program utilization), first, domestic studies related to non-suicidal self-harm increased steadily through 2019 and 2022 after increasing in 2017 (three articles) showing shape. Second, changes in the characteristics of the research subjects began to appear. If previous studies had mainly focused on adolescents who experienced self-harm, it was expanded to early adulthood (college students), and the subjects of the study diversified to include those who had experienced self-harm cessation, counselors, and parents. Third, various research methods began to appear. Compared to 2017, when quantitative research was active, research was conducted that applied various qualitative research methods (narrative, phenomenology, grounded theory, meta-analysis, case study). Finally, discussion of the research results and suggestions for future research were added.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate factors that affect the suicidal ideation of the people with mental disabilities. To this end, the independent variables were analyzed by categorizing them into individual psychological factors, social factors, and demographic characteristics. The analysis data include 969 people with mental disabilities who participated in the 2017 Ministry of Health and Welfare's Research, 'Survey on the Current Status of Mental Disabilities in Community'. The analysis method was frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis with SPSS 23.0. As a result of the study, in terms of individual psychological factors, the higher the depression and the lower the mental health confidence, the more suicidal ideation increase. In terms of social factors, the more unregistered disabled groups, the more exposure to violence and discrimination, and the more they live in large cities, the higher their ideation of suicidal. The regression model explained 26.9% of suicidal ideation. The practical and policy implications for the prevention of suicide of the people with mental disabilities based on these results are as follows: First, social factors should be evaluated and considered together, rather than focusing only on individual psychological factors, in seeking policies and intervention programs that reduce suicidal ideation in the people with mental disabilities. Second, in seeking suicide prevention policies for the people with mental disabilities, Protection & Advocacy services should be provided to reduce violence and discrimination experiences. Third, in order to reduce the suicidal ideation of the people with mental disabilities, the mental disability registration system should be reorganized, and policy alternatives should be devised so that those experiencing mental distress can be included into the system.
