  • This study was performed to identify the association between the menarche experience and mental health in middle school girls aged 14. The subjects were selected using data from the 8th Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBWS-V), which included 5,991 girls in 1st grade of middle school. Data were analyzed using the PASW 18.0 program for frequency analysis, t-test, chi square and logistic regression analysis. As to results, we found 4,473 girls who had experienced menarche (mean age, 12.8 0.9 years) and 1,518 girls hadn't experienced menarche. In the logistic regression analysis between the menarche experience and mental health behaviors, the odds ratio (OR) [95% confidence interval (CI)] for perceived stress (OR=1.39, 1.20-1.62, p<0.001), perceived depression (OR=1.25, 1.10-1.42, p<0.05), suicide thinking (6OR=1.60, 1.38-1.87, <0.001), suicide planning (OR=1.66, 1.33-2.81, p<0.001) and suicide trial (OR=1.42, 1.09-1.86, p<0.05) were higher in the menarche experience group than in the menarche non-experience group. Our results indicate, a viable association between the menarche experience and mental health in the 1st grade of middle school girls, and suggests that the menarche experience is an important factor influencing adolescent girls' mental health.

  • This study aimed to compare Psycho-social Well-being depending on level of internet addiction and investigate the factors inducing internet addiction among 749 college students. The Internet Addiction Diagnosis Criterion Inventory was used to classify participants into two groups, Internet overuse and Internet normal use. The psychosocial well-being of each group was measured by hopelessness, idea of suicide, suicide attempt, stress, social isolation, and mental health. Data were analyzed using the t-test and $x^2$-test to compare general characteristics, level of internet addiction and psycho-social well-being between two groups(the overuse and normal use group). Moreover, logistic regression analysis was used to examine the factors inducing internet addiction. The results placed 82 people (10.9%) in the internet overuse group and 667 people(89.1%) in the internet normal use group. The internet overuse group showed higher level of hopelessness, idea of suicide, suicide attempt, stress, social isolation, and mental health scores than the internet normal use group. Therefore, people in the internet overuse group were more likely to have worse Psycho-social well-being. The results of this study recommend that the Internet overuse should be screened early because it can be useful in developing addiction prevention programs and then finally improving the psycho-social well-being.

  • This study investigated the differences in health behaviors of adolescents depending on their sexual experiences. Secondary data analysis was conducted using the data of 61,861 respondents from the 2017 adolescents' health behavior online survey in Korea. Adolescents with sexual experience were typically male, in high school, from a boy's school, had low academic performance, lived apart from their parents, and of either high or low economic status; their health behaviors were characterized by more physical activity, stress, sadness and hopelessness, thought/planned/attempted suicide, drinking, and smoking. Almost half of adolescents with sexual experience (48.9%) did not use contraception. The results of this study are significant and can contribute to the development of sex education programs when considering the characteristics of Korean adolescents and their sexual health.

Methods: This study used data extracted from Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey of 2014. The data of 1,926 adolescents, in total, who had experienced violence were included in the analysis, The analysis was done using SPSS/WIN. Results: The adolescents with an experience of being bullied were more likely to engage in suicidal ideation and suicidal attempts than the average teenagers in Korea. In addition, suicidal thoughts were affected by gender, experience of habitual drug use, subjective happiness, as well as sadness and despair. Suicidal attempts were influenced by gender, grade, smoking experience, experience of habitual drug use, size of the city of residence, subjective happiness, sadness and hopelessness, existence of people to get counseling, and habit of walking for 10 minutes every day. Conclusion: More attention should be given to the suicidal risk of adolescents having experienced violence. Further studies are required to develop an intervention program for suicide prevention targeting adolescents who have experienced violence and assess the program's effectiveness.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify predictors of suicidal attempts in adolescents over 5 years after school dropout. Methods: The data of the Panel Survey of School Dropouts (of 2013 to 2017) conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute were analyzed. The analysis used the 2013 survey data as the baseline and examined suicidal attempts from 2013 to 2017. A total of 776 adolescents were included in the analysis. Descriptive statistics, 𝝌2 test, t-test, and multiple logistic regression were carried out using SAS 9.2. Results: About 11% (87 out of 776) of the adolescents with an experience of dropout attempted suicide between 2013 and 2017. The risk of suicidal attempts was significantly lower in female (AOR: 0.57, 95% CI: 0.87~0.93) than in male adolescents. The higher the self-esteem, the lower the risk of suicidal attempts (AOR: 0.87. 95% CI: 0.78~0.97). The higher the depression level (AOR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.05~1.16) and the rate of parental abuse (AOR: 1.09, 95% CI: 1.02~1.18), the higher the risk of suicidal attempts. Conclusion: The findings of the study suggest that those who are male, depressed, have low self-esteem or have been abused by their parents are at high risk of suicidal attempts among the adolescents with dropout experiences. Therefore, early intervention is necessary for those at high risk.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between dietary behavior and related factors according to the generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in adolescents. The results of analyzing demographic characteristics according to the GAD showed that gender, age, BMI, type of school, residence type, father's nationality, smoking and drinking experience, perceived health status, perception of body shape, economic status, academic achievement, physical activity, sedentary time and smartphone usage time were related to the GAD (p<0.01). The results of analyzing dietary behavior according to the GAD showed that the frequency of water intake, sweetened beverage intake, fast food intake, fruit intake and breakfast intake were related to the GAD (p<0.001). The results of analyzing depression and suicidality according to the GAD showed that depression, suicidal ideation, planning, and attempts were all related to the GAD (p<0.001). Even after adjusting for factors corresponding to demographic characteristics, it was confirmed that the level of GAD had a significant effect on depression and suicidality. This study is significant in that it provided basic data on adolescent mental health problems by analyzing dietary behavior and related factors according to the level of GAD.

  • Objectives: There is higher rates of experience of suicide ideation and suicide attempt of adolescents in the Lima and Callao region compared with the results of the epidemiological study (2013) conducted by Peru National Institute of Mental Health and the Global School-based Student Health Survey (2010) which is was conducted among adolescents across all regions of Peru. Based on the PRECEDE model, this study analyzed the prevalence and the factor associated with the suicide attempt among the adolescent in a poor urban area in Peru. Methods: A stratified random sampling was used for the survey to select study participants from the 6 secondary schools based in Comas or Callao. The survey was conducted November 25th and December 4th in 2015 and a total of 738 individuals included in the analysis. In order to analyze factors influencing suicide attempt, comparison of predisposing factor, reinforcing factor, enabling factor, behavioral factor, environmental factor, psychological factors by suicide attempt and suicide risk group were identified through the chi-square test and hierarchical logistic regression. Results: Results showed that those who reported having less parental understanding, less time spent with parents, and 'almost none/none' for parental affection had more experience of suicide attempt and were more likely to sort into the high suicide risk group. Also, a greater proportion of those with the experience of suicide attempt had more experience of smoking and alcohol consumption, and experience of physical abuse and feeling insulted and depression in comparison to that of those without experience of suicide attempt. Variables that had a significant effect on suicide attempt included depression, subjective happiness, smoking experience, sexual intercourse, involvement in fight, parental affection, and gender (male). Conclusions: The results of the current study can serve as grounds for the necessity of acknowledging that adolescent suicide does not simply depend on a couple of factors, but arises from situations in which individual, home, school, social factors influence one another, and therefore adolescent suicide should be prevented and addressed through a multi-dimensional and integrated approach.

  • This qualitative research examined the experiences and patterns of military life of service maladaptive soldiers. The research site was the place where the soldiers of the A-adaptive soldiers' healing program were conducted, and the study period was conducted from September 2016 to December 2017. Maladaptive soldiers' military life experience pattern was analyzed, and their experience consisted of three domains (early domain after joining the army, middle domain after joining the army, and last domain where they failed to adapt themselves), five cultural themes, 12 categories, and 29 attributes. The cultural themes of maladaptive soldiers in their military life experiences were as follows: facing unfamiliar military culture, hardship, being left alone in a group, pain becoming unbearable, and the last choice of leaving a painful military life. Maladaptive soldiers attempted suicide after they failed to overcome the psychological pain, but they needed help during their early period of adaptation. Moreover, during their middle period of adaptation, they needed guidance for their immature coping strategies, and ultimately they had misperceptions about their death together with a pessimistic view about their life. These results are expected to be used as basic data for the development of mental nursing arbitration programs and suicide prevention projects to help service maladaptive soldiers.
