  • This paper describes a seismic analysis of chemical pump using automated mesh generation system. The use of an automated analysis system, involving FE codes together with CAD systems and FE pre- and post-processors, has provided an important step towards shortening the design process and structural optimization. The FE model, which is a FE mesh accompanied with the analysis condition, is automatically converted from the analysis model. The FE models are then automatically analyzed using the FE analysis code. This integrated FE simulation system is applied to an analysis of three-dimensional complex solid structures such as a chemical pump.

  • This paper describes an automatic finite element mesh generation for finite element analysis of three-dimensional structures. It is consisting of fuzzy knowledge processing, bubble meshing and solid geometry modeler. This novel mesh generation process consists of three subprocesses: (a) definition of geometric model, i.e. analysis model, (b) generation of bubbles, and (c) generation of elements. One of commercial solid modelers is employed for three-dimensional solid structures. Bubble is generated if its distance from existing bubble points is similar to the bubble spacing function at the point. The bubble spacing function is well controlled by the fuzzy knowledge processing. The Delaunay method is introduced as a basic tool for element generation. Automatic generation of finite element for three-dimensional solid structures holds great benefits for analyses. Practical performances of the present system are demonstrated through several mesh generations for 3D geometry.

  • A general-purpose program for automatic two-dimensional finite-element modelling with quadrilateral elements was developed in this research. The conventional looping method employed in the program was introduced with emphasis on a new splitting criterion and a splitting scheme developed for improving the method. Some application examples were given, which show versatility and applicability of the developed program.

  • This paper provides background theories and numerical results of automatic finite element (FE) mesh generation for freeform discrete structures. The present method adopts the computer aided geometric design (CAGD) technique to overcome the limitation of case-sensitive traditional automatic FE mesh generator. The present technique involves two steps. The first one is to represent the shape of the structure using the geometric model based on the CAGD and the second one is to generate the discrete FE mesh of spatial structures over the geometric model. From numerical results, it is found to be that the present technique is very easy to produce the FE mesh for free-form spatial structures and it can also reuse some features of traditional automatic mesh generator in the process. Furthermore, it shows the possibility to be used for the shape optimization of large spatial structures.

  • Theoretical foundation and algorithms are presented of a new surface modeling and pre-processing system for the three-dimensional structures. The modeling method is based on the boundary representation scheme and composed of two hierarchical model structures: curve-network and surface models. The concept of modeling curve as a union of links is introduced to facilitate surface modeling via various transfinite mapping techniques or Coons Patches. Efficiency and novel aspects of the present method are discussed. Finite element mesh genceration and application procedures will be reported in a later paper.

  • Integrating a 3D solid modeler with a general purpose FEM code, an automatic stress intensity factor analysis system of the 3D crack problems has been developed. A geometry model, i.e. a solid containing one or several 3D cracks is defined. Several distributions of local node density are chosen, and then automatically superposed on one another over the geometry model by using the fuzzy knowledge processing. Nodes are generated and quadratic tetrahedral solid elements are generated by the Delaunay triangulation techniques. Finally, the complete finite element(FE) model generated, and a stress analysis is performed. This paper describes the methodologies to realize such functions, and demonstrates the validity of the present system.
