  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of different farrowing space, narrow and wide, on the sow performances and piglet growth performances. The $1.5m^2$ of narrow farrowing space was determined as the size of farrowing crate. The $3.0m^2$ of wide space for farrowing sow was the same of farrowing pen to allow the behavior freedom of sow. Baby piglets in the wide farrowing space was protected from crushing of sow by installation of safety bar. The pregnant sows used in this study were stall-housed during gestation and moved to each farrowing spaces on 8 d before parturition. Feed intake, backfat thickness and body condition score of sow were not affected by both farrowing spaces. However, the changes in backfat thickness and body condition score between farrowing and weaning in wide farrowing space were lower (p<0.05) than in narrow farrowing space. The return to estrus of sow was remarkably decreased in wide farrowing space compared to sows in narrow farrowing space. The lower number of stillbirth and higher mortality of piglets were observed in wide farrowing space. From the results, although wide farrowing space could be practically acceptable in terms of sow performances, possible cause of mortality of piglets should be scrutinized through observation of piglet and sow behaviors.

  • Gnotobiotic piglets were routinely produced by hysterectomy. In this study, 22 pregnant miniature pigs (111th to 113th day of gestation) were used for hysterectomy. Before surgery, 14 pigs were insensibilizated by Ketamine 50® plus CO2 gas and 8 pigs by a slaughter pistol. The high level of Ketamine 50® (0.09㎖/kg) was faster (146 vs 283 seconds) in surgery but the time taken for complete revival of one piglet was more prolonged (427 vs 64 seconds) than 0.03㎖/kg level. In hysterectomies with a slaughter pistol, surgery time was faster (470 vs 155 seconds) and the rate of alive piglets was higher (97.0 vs 83.8%) than in those with Ketamine 50®. There were no problems in the rate of alive newborn piglets even when sows were hysterectomized at 3 days prepartum.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of parity and postpartum day on the behavior of nursing sows and their suckling piglets. Total 36 Landrace or Yorkshire sows(range of parity: 1 to 8) and their litters(range of litter size: 11 to 13 piglets) were assigned with sow's parity($1{\sim}2,\;3{\sim}4$ and 5 or more) and sow's postpartum days(day 1, 7, 14 and 21). The sows were housed in farrowing crates($0.6{\times}2.1m$) located in pens($2.4{\times}1.8m$) with totally perforated flooring. The sows and piglets were conventionally managed. The sows and their piglets behaviors were recorded during the 24 hour period at 1, 7, 14 and 21 days of postpartum. The obtained results from this study were as follows; 1. All the nursing sows in both group made attempts for lateral tying more than for other behaviors for whole days. The order of behavioral frequency at 1 and 3 weeks postpartum according the days of postpartum of sows was lateral tying, ventral lying, standing, sitting, feeding and drinking. The nursing sows at day 1 postpartum spent more time on sitting and standing than the sows at day 7 or more postpartum. 2. The parity of sows did not affected the lateral tying and sitting behavior of nursing sows, however the ventral tying are lowed in $1{\sim}2$ parity of sow group than the other parity group. Standing, feeding and drinking behavior of sows was not showed at any trends according to the sow's parity. 3. In the behaviors of suckling piglets, lying was increased and unsuccessful suckling was decreased until 21 days postpartum. Compared to the 7, 14 and 21 day postpartum, piglets at the 1 day postpartum spent less time for lying and walking, whereas they spent much more time for unsuccessful suckling. 4. According th the sow's parity, their piglets tying and unsuccessful suckling was lowed in $1{\sim}2$ parity sow group, however more than 3 parity sow's piglets behavior are not affected.

  • The present study was performed to investigate the effect of ozonation of the swine nursery building on indoor air quality and growth efficiency of the weanling piglets. Forty 21-day-old, cross-bred weanling piglets were housed in two ozonated or unozonated pens(10 males and 10 females per pen) for 3 wk alternately in a swine nursery building and this procedure was repeated three times. Ozone was generated using a commercial apparatus outside the nursery building and infused into the nursery building through a duct at a level of 0.03 ppm. Indoor concentrations of harmful gases were measured at 2-h intervals for a 24-h period per each 3-wk feeding trial. Indoor ammonia and carbon dioxide gas concentrations were reduced by the ozonation(P〈0.01) by 21% and 7%, respectively, compared with those of the control(unozonation), although hydrogen sulfide concentration was not affected by the treatment. However, the weight gain, feed intake and feed/gain of the piglets did not change due to the ozonation. Results suggest that ozonation of the swine nursery building is effective for improving the indoor air quality without affecting the production efficiency of weanling piglets.

  • This experiment was conducted to determine the effects of non-climatic environmental factors on growth performances and behavioural patterns of weanling pigs. Three hundred and sixty weanling pigs were contained and carried out with three levels of spaces per pig(0.18, 0.23 and 0.30$m^2$) and three different numbers of pigs per pen(15, 20 and 25 pigs) up to 30kg body weight. Designed by using a 3 $\times$ 3 factorial arrangement(three levels of spaces $\times$ three different numbers of pigs). This experiment investigated the effects of main factors and the relationship between each factors. The result of this experiment were summarized as follows ; 1. The reduction of floor space caused the reduction of feed/gain in the weanling pigs. Pigs responded with the increased feed intake(p<0.01) and with no change in body weight gain. 2. There were no significant differences in the body weight gain and feed/gain in weanling pigs by changing group sizes, but group size affected the feed intake significantly(p<0.01). 3. Space allowance affected the behavioural patterns significantly(p<0.01) of weanling pigs. The reduction of floor space caused the increment of aggressive behaviour and weanling pigs responded with the decreased resting, non aggressive social and play behaviour. 4. There were no significant differences in the resting, eating, aggressive and non aggressive social behaviour in weanling pigs by changing group sizes, but the large group size caused the reduction of play behaviour in the weanling pigs(p<0.01). 5. Therefore we concluded that weanling pigs require 0.23$m^2$ per pig and 20~25 pigs per pen for the better environment condition.

  • Suckling piglets must avoid positions with high air velocity because they don’t have hypodermic fat. Therefore this study examined the effects of air ejection on the behaviors of sows and their piglets. Compressed air was released for 5s at 5s intervals between floor and udder of sows only when they were standing or sitting. Sixteen multiparous crossbred(Landrace×Yorkshire) sows and their piglets were used. Behaviors of sixteen sows and their piglets were recorded for 4 days postpartum, using the LED lamp(wavelength:950nm), CCD camera(Samsung SDC-411), multiplexer(Samsung SDM-080), and time lapsed VCR(Samsung SRV-30). The videotapes were scanned every 30s to obtain an instantaneous behavioral sample. The sow’s standing and sitting rates between control group(CG) and air ejection group(AEG) were not significantly different(P>0.05). This means that air ejection does not affect the behavior of sows. Frequency of the suckling piglets’ behaviors closely related to the crushing by sows was lower in AEG than in CG(P<0.05). These results suggest that air ejection may be available for reduction of the crushing of suckling piglets by sows.

  • This study was carried out to find out PSS(Porcine Stress Syndrome) with the PSE(Pale, Soft, Exudative) in different piglets. These experiments were accomplished with the aid of PCR-RFLP(Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism). The samples were collected and examined from umbilical cord blood of piglets of Yorkshire, Landrace and Crossbred. And then, the PCR products were digested by restriction enzyme, Hha I. The results obtained were as follows; The PCR products of the blood genomic DNA of ryanodine receptor gene were length of 1 .8kb in umbilical cord blood. Normal type(NN), heterozygous type(Nn) and recessively homozygous type(nn, PSS) as a result of digestion of restriction enzyme, Hha 1, were 90.0%, 10.0% and 0.0% in Yorkshire piglets, 76.2%, 19.0% and 4.8% in Landrace, 69.1%, 23.8% and 7.1% in crossbred, respectively. As already showing the above results, the blood from piglets umbilical cord can be availably used for the determination of genotypes of PSS because of easiness of blood collection without stress in live piglets.
