  • Backgound: The present study was designed to investigate the moderating role of binge drinking on the relationship between self-assertiveness and sexual victimization among college students (N=393, male: 161, female: 232). We hypothesized that the relationship between self-assertiveness and sexual victimization is meaningful only when binge drinking is low, not high. Methods: Using an online site, participants filled out a packet of questionnaires for demographic information, their amount of unwanted sexual contact experience, and their rate of alcohol consumption. Results: In the result, binge drinking moderated the relationship between self-assertiveness and sexual victimization. For the high binge drinker group, high self-assertiveness was not a statistically significant predictor of sexual victimization. Conclusions: Although self-assertiveness is known to be a protective factor against sexual victimization, our results imply that self-assertiveness alone is not enough to lower sexual victimization. Binge drinking and self-assertiveness are considered together in sexual violence prevention programs.

  • This study was conducted to identify the relationships between body type perception and emotional intelligence and sexual assertiveness of female college students. The study participants were 288 nursing students of two universities in Chungnam province. Data were collected by a self-administered questionnaire from March 1 to May 20, 2017. Collected data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS 20.0 program. The higher the emotional intelligence, the higher the sexual assertiveness(r=.25, p<.001), but sexual assertiveness according to body type perception were not significant. Factors influencing sexual assertiveness were religion, time of first relationship, body mass index, and emotional intelligence, which accounted 18.7%. Therefore, interventions for improving sexual assertiveness of female college students should include interventions for improving emotional intelligence. Studies on the relationship between body type perception and sexual assertiveness of female college students should be conducted.

A structured questionnaire was completed by 291 university students from March 1 to April 31, 2016. Data were analyzed to calculate the direct and indirect effects of factors affecting safer sexual behavior using SPSS WIN 21.0 and AMOS 18.0 programs. Final model fit indices were RMSEA .05, GFI .98, AGFI .94, NFI .96, and self-esteem, sexual communication for parents showed a direct effect on sexual assertiveness and safer sexual behavior of university students. Sexual assertiveness mediated the relationships among self-esteem, sexual communication for parents, and safer sexual behavior. Furthermore, it is shown that the sexual assertiveness significantly mediates the relation between the positive self-esteem, sexual open communication for parents and safer sexual behavior of early adults.

  • This study focused on the sex culture and the sexual rights of women, examining the gender-role stereotype that is related to the protection of the sexual rights of female college students and identifying the influence of self- esteem. The research was conducted on gender-role stereotypes, sexual assertiveness, and self-esteem among female university students attending four-year universities in Seoul and Gyeonggi. Four hundred eighty-two copies were used for analysis. The Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to identify the correlation between the variables. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify the mediated effects of self-esteem in the effects of gender-role stereotypes on sexual assertiveness. The Sobel test was conducted to confirm that the effects were statistically significant. The results of this study were as follows. First, the gender-role stereotype had negative correlations with self-esteem and sexual assertiveness. Self-esteem had positive correlations with sexual assertiveness. Second, self-esteem was found to be a partial mediating factor when the gender-role stereotype had a statistically significant effect on sexual assertiveness. Therefore, a coping strategy under the influence of the gender-role stereotype is necessary for improving the sexual assertiveness skill of female students. This study also suggests the need for sex role-related education programs or counseling on self-esteem.

Overall, 149 nurses working in a long-term care hospital in G Province were evaluated. The date was collected from November 30 2019 to December 18, 2019 and analyzed using SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. The mean of moral sensitivity among nurses was 4.94, the mean of self-assertiveness was 3.17 and the mean of ethical decision-making confidence was 3.49. The self-assertiveness will, according to the general characteristics, was significantly different according to experienced moral distress, and there was a significant difference in the degree of ethical decision-making confidence according to social positions and experience of ethical education. There were positive correlations between the ethical decision-making confidence and moral sensitivity (r=.382, p<.001) and self-assertiveness (r=.224, p<.01). Regression analysis revealed that the factors that significantly influenced ethical decision-making confidence were moral sensitivity, self-assertiveness and ethical education during nursing practice, which explained 25.0% of variance in ethical decision-making confidence. Therefore, to improve ethical decision-making confidence of nurses, programs should be developed that improve moral sensitivity and self-assertiveness by promoting ethical education.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of child care teachers' emotional supports in individual classrooms on children's social skills, including self-control, assertion, cooperation, and responsibility that were related to their character development. Data were collected in a purposive sample involving 32 teachers working with 646 children at age five and 555 parents of the children. Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) was used to analyze a two-level model. The results showed that there were significant differences among classes with data reported by teachers but characteristics such as teachers' education and work experiences, child-teacher ratio, and type of child care centers as well as teacher's emotional supports did not explain the differences. Children's age and gender, which were predictors at the individual level, significantly explained their level of social skills reported by parents as well as teachers. The findings implied that other predictors influencing differences among classes should be explored in future studies.

  • This study has expanded the existing studies on the characteristics of consumers using the personal level of cultural dimensions and self-construal. As Korean are becoming more individualistic and independent, we have focused on consumer independence in self-construal. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of consumer independence on consumers' attitudes and purchase intention toward consensus claim in ads. We hypothesized that individuals with higher in independence are more likely to show negative attitudes and the purchase intention towards the ads focused on consensus claim. Two experiments revealed that consumers higher in independence, depicting consensus claim in ads reduces consumers' attitudes and purchase intention. Based on the results, we suggest that for individuals higher in independence, consensus claims in product advertisement are less effective advertising strategy which ultimately lower consumers' purchase intentions. Important theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
